Friday Fun: Which animal has been used in the most band names?

So we all know that "Panda" was very much the animal de jour for indie musicians recently and perhaps now it's something like "bees" or "bear" - they were pretty popular for a while, too. You must've contemplated as much and, in doing so, wondered to yourself "which animal features in the most band names?". Well, the good news is now that we have some quantifiable if perhaps dubious results, thanks to a question on Quora.

Surprised? Well I was. Bothered? Not particularly. Below is the full list, plurals included, with the number of occurrences.

  1. 948 jay:925 jays:23
  2. 454 dog:289 dogs:165
  3. 424 cat:260 cats:164
  4. 297 wolf:255 wolves:42
  5. 277 fox:266 foxes:11
  6. 240 bird:142 birds:98
  7. 213 monkey:145 monkeys:68
  8. 208 fisher:206 fishers:2
  9. 204 human:204 humen:0
  10. 191 bear:145 bears:46

I am certain, absolutely certain that "humen" is not the plural of "human" but we'll let that one go. Happy Friday, people.

What about Gorilla?

How many times has that been used? Can anyone help me?

One suspects that 'Jay' is not related to the animal,

but rather the first name of the singer (eg. Jay Reatard, Jay Jay Pistolet, Screamin' Jay Hawkins).

Also, I would have expected 'Tiger' to be in there somewhere.

Wot no rabbit?

Frightened Rabbit, White Rabbits, The Half Rabbits...

Would Jay Jay Pistolet count as one 'jay' or two?

And what about Jessie J? Does she count as a 'jay'? These are the big questions facing the music industry today.

@bagsy

Beat me too it!

Since when is a 'fisher' an animal?

I'm beginning to think this list has not been compiled with the care I'd expect such a serious topic to deserve.

I'm going to start a band called Fisher and the Humen though.

Or possibly Fisher: and the 'Humen'

so I can get in the other list with the punctuation marks in as well.
