Shame on a Jigga: Jay-Z dissed by Festival Awards
What's the beef with Jay-Z? We thought the public consensus was that the US rapper's Glastonbury headline set was a massive success... but apparently not. Jigga, you see, has been roundly snubbed at this year's UK Festival Awards, which are voted for by festival attendees and not industry types.
Even Kings Of Leon, who put in a damp squib of a headline set at Glasto, got a nomination for Best Headliner. So too The Verve. What's up with that? They were gash. And Beyoncé's other half is also a notable absentee from the Best Urban Act category, where Dizzee Rascal, Estelle, NERD, Roots Manuva and The Streets duke it out for the incomprehensibly titled gong.
He may, though, take a little solace from the fact his 'Wonderwall' pastiche is up for Most Memorable Moment. Or perhaps not. Let's face it, he doesn't really care, does he? But we do. That was easily the best headline set at Glastonbury...
The rest of the nominations can be found at www.festivalawards.com.
DiScuss: why didn't Jay-Z get more nominations at the awards? Have we been lied to about hip-hop conquering Glastonbury 2008? Were you there? Can you even remember?

friends have told me that
the show was very no frills, basic and nothing really special happening on stage. I don't know how true this is but perhaps the reason why??
As opposed to Kings Of Leons
Vegas themed strippers and car crash fireball extravaganza?
..
i thought it was a real let down in terms of how much he 'rocked it up' to fit in. When i saw Jay Z years ago it was him, a mike, decks, and Memphis Bleak, playing an arena.
it seems that in order to fit in and be accepted by 'guitar music' fans all rappers have to court them, by adding guitars to their records and pandering to them. There are loads of examples of this.
it would have been a much braver, bold, better show if he can out and actually done a rap show, as he normally would.
.
8correction* "CAME out and actually DID a rap show. Strewth. i'm so tired I can't type...
that rendition of 99 problems SLAYS POWERFULL
looks like the best live song this year.
my favourite bit is when he does the little finger thing during the "press fast forward" line.
Stooooosh!
99 Problems
was the absolute highlight of Glastonbury this year.
The rest of his set was pretty flipping amazing too.
You'd have to have been really trying hard not to have pissed your pants at how ace it was.
Does anyone really give a toss about festival awards? Which "festival attendees" voted? V festival attendees?
It started well
Then I got bored and wandered off...
Best toilets
Easily ATP or any of there other events held in the holiday camp sites lol.
yeah, but what would they know?
(that was to the article btw)
Public consensus?
Media consensus should never be mistaken for public consensus. They are two entirely different things.
i dunno i think hes had a live band and stuff with him for a while hasnt he?
and the wonderwall thing was clearly a pisstake. and i dont think it was pandering either, it was getting people into it by adapting his show to the audience. pretty sensible really
He was the best thing there
...so this depresses me.
