Hey designers! Get involved with this Public Relations Exercise...

Leicester-based punk five-piece Public Relations Exercise - who are booked to play August's DiScover Club at London's Notting Hill Arts Club - are offering you the opportunity to design the cover for their forthcoming single, 'Catalyst'.

The single is due for release in October through Field Records, and is taken from the band's excellent Come You Are Safe, We Are From The Bombs album (DiS review here). The artist responsible for the winning design will receive a bundle of P.R.E. goodies and, y'know, get to see their work on the cover of a record, which is nice.

The competition's running as of now, and all submissions need to be signed, sealed and delivered by August 11. Send your design/s to:

publicrelationsexercise@hotmail.com

can be!

but, it would help us out loads and loads if you could get it photographed and edit up!

if you contact us thru the hotmail address, we can give out specs, dimensions or (but, it better be fuckin brilliant) an address to send physical artwork

this is bit of time saving exercise for us, we need to write & record 2 new tracks for the b-side by the 5th of August!

so anywhere you can save time, please try and do so

wot he said!

shouldn't this be:

'Leicester-based punk five-piece Public Relations Exercise don't want to pay for design work and don't know any decent designers so they are getting their fans to do it for free'

It really pisses me off when bands run these 'competitions'

innit, fuckin freeloaders...

headline should be "Bunch of Gippo's Steal Your SkillZ, Dress It Up As An Exciting Oppourtunity"

Well to be honest

If an unemployed/young designer wants to do it for free and get a piece of their work used in a commercial market place (which is just about the most impressive thing you can add to a portfolio) and the band get good quality CD artwork for free, then everybody wins, surely?

So what's your problem with that?

Jeez, I swear the people on this board can find a reason to complain about just about anything.

Agreed

It is a cheap and sneaky way to get some artwork done, but on the flipside it may have recognition/portfolio benefits, albeit rather small ones, for the winner, and then only if they're fucking good.

it really pisses me off when....

people act annoyed by something that they care very little about!

p.s.
Digital Artwork: 300dpi minimum

no one good

is going to touch this.s

you get what you pay for.

soz

as a designer myself I'm constantly asked to do freebies, which I routinely turn down because doing design work is how I earn my living. If you want it done, pay for it.

I don't like to see people trying to take the piss.

Plus I think it takes the piss out of the fans too. Not as much as those 'hey fans make us our music video' comps, because that takes a fuck of a lot more effort than a piece of artwork

but

it's not exactly taking work away from you that you would have been paid for, and it opens up to people who are amazing artists but don't have to time to do it as a proper job.

you act like it's a direct insult at you, when it's really just a good idea for all involved.

and a good band!!

i'm not saying that

i'm just saying don't mask something as a competition just because you don't want to pay for design work.

it isn't a mask

there's a prize and a date and a physical result, that's a proper competition, and a good idea.

and a good band!!

.

...being in a band is expensive - paying for petrol, recording, releasing, touring and all the other crap. We, nor our label can afford to put a lot into paying for a designer so we opted to try this approach. As someone mentioned earlier, it could be a good opportunity for someone. An artist, young designer might jump at the the chance to have their work pressed and put on the front of a record. I would.

Also lets not forget, free album and t-shirt! ;-)

exactly, get the album n t shirt signed

then stick em on ebay.

:-D

Being a designer is expensive

if you never get paid.

Anyway ignore me. I hope you get a nice record sleeve :)

being in a band is better.

jokes :-), i hope they get a nice sleeve too

stuff for free

.....bet you like to get in the guest list for venues, though.

simple answer: don't enter the competition then if you don't want to.

there was a competition on radio 1 the other day where I actually had to text in to win something I didn't want. I was so huffy I wrote all about it on a forum.

god P.R.E., radio 1, all of these magazines, Blue Peter....they've all got some front haven't they?

hilarious

its not as if PRE are going to make much if any cash from a single release these days.

if anything, a designer would get equal exposure, without having to go through the financial costs of promoting their work......

its a win win situation. PRE clearly dont know anyone who's work they'd like to use and they need some design work.

and theres a stack of designers looking to gain greater exposure for their portfolio.

so accusations of cheapness are pretty unfounded in my eyes, and somewhat childish. singles dont make money full stop, they can bring exposure. so whining about accusing a band of being tight. is really. complete bollocks.

You're 100% right!

We can't afford to pay for it! We're still paying for our Studio time (last December) for the album! Not long finished paying for our Van! And lets not forget to mention paying for the pressing of the singles! And, hopefully, if we have any money left a bit of PR for the single also!

We're on a Indie label that's not long getting on it's feet! So please don't publicly condemn us for not throwing money into our artwork

But, just so you know, we ARE paying a friend to help us out with the video!

You make us sound like we're fleecing people! Seriously we barely cover diesel for shows and this is purely non-profit in just about every facet of the band!

And we are not moaning/looking for sympathy! These are merely the facts of being in a independent band

stop being

gay

i like guest lists....

oh. sorry. oops.

can I plug my

summer sundae fringe festival?

www.myspace.com/summersundaefringefestival

featuring, erm, a band called PRE?

thanks

Nah

as a designer MYself I do a combination of paid work and freebies. The freebies I do generally for bands that I rate, and usually in return for something like a free t-shirt or guestlist spots or whatever. I like getting involved with the creativity of bands that I rate in this way.

The good thing about this competition is that if you don't like it, you don't have to enter it - it doesn't seem like a scam to me, it seems a bit like a physical embracing of the Web 2.0 world where every fucker (eg. myself) has an opinion and idea and concept about everything and is happy to share it.

.

I think i might have a pop at this.

do you have a logo people we download?

let me rephrase that

do you have a logo we can download?

.

Exactly.

Plus most designers are probably sitting there designing a bank website, or annual report for some dull-as-fuck company, and getting paid well for it. A little light relief like this is a good thing.

Designers, getting paid well?

LOLZ... Id like to bust that little bubble right away.

but yeah, things like this are great for designers to get their work out there. fact.

Designers shouldn't work for free

and there seems to be a big problem with companies, especially those in media, expecting us to do so just because they're in a "cool" industry and "hey it'll look great in your portfolio". Don't forget you'll be competing against hundreds of other designers, so if you're after a printed portfolio piece there are many better places to expend your creative juices.

That said, this band do seem genuine and I don't think this is anything like some of these bigger bands/companies trying to get free design work and videos. Good luck to anyone with enough time on their hands to enter!

.

Well, I get paid OK.

...and a good band!
