McGee: Robbie's "utterly vacant"
- Artists:
- Robbie Williams »
Industry 'bigwig' Alan McGee has stuck his neck out and attacked Robbie Williams for being a "showbiz chancer" who is "destroying British pop culture".
Comparing him to the bloated talents of Elton John and George Michael, McGee told BBC 6 Music: "These people are brilliant, world class musical talents. Robbie's just a showbiz chancer.”
That's not to say I don't like Elton John or George Michael. Sometimes talent is better bloated. It's hilarious! Get rich, get fat and die. P'raps Robbie should take note.
“It's people like him who are destroying British pop culture," McGee kept on. "He has one per cent of Mick Jagger’s talent. He's the post 9/11 feel good factor. He doesn't mean anything. He's utterly vacant."
One can only assume that McGee didn't feel quite so protective of British pop culture back in the vacancy of 1977. God save the Queen!

McGee's
lost his marbles. His daily myspace rants are sometimes bonkers.
But yes, sometimes he's right. esp re Jonathan King and Robbie.
AND, robbie WAS fat circa 1995. A bloated-washed up alkie hanging off Oasis' coat-tails.
I agree
Robbie is nowhere near as good as George Michael.
Robbie Williams isn't destroying the industry
The industry is allowing Robbie to destroy it. Slight difference.
.
isn't robbie completely past it over the hill no-one cares about him anymore? wouldn't this rant have been better 5 years ago when people liked robbie?
Am I the only one who mistook that as
'Showbiz Cancer'?
no
it was almost the headline
AndrewViolet speak da troof
The only person more washed up than Robbie Williams is Alan McGee, who ceased to be relevant about a decade ago. He's just a sad old voice from the past (like Bill Drummond) who occasionally gets a bit of sympathy-Press because he used to be worth knowing. It's the media equivalent of putting a coin in a wino's tin cup.
Alan McGee
Is a narrow personality who primarily likes dull, workmanlike rock. The fact he doesn't care for Robbie, particularly since he's gone all wacky self-referential electro, is no surprise whatsoever.
But if I had to choose one of them to dictate "British pop culture" (whatever that means), I'd choose Robbie any day of the week.
JAMC, Super Furries, MBV
workmanlike rock?
frankly
anyone who claims that a record by world-class dullards Mogwai can be "the best thing ever" is either severely deluded, or a wee bit tonedeaf.
House Of Love
Teenage Fanclub, King Biscuit Time, The Boo Radleys, Hypnotone, Viking Moses.
Yeah, he's signed some good bands
But I think he's done so in spite of, rather than because of, their inventiveness. I've read enough of his interviews over the years to realise he's a bit of a dullard, albeit a lucky one.
No
Radio 1 doesn't HAVE to be in thrall to him, to give but one example. They could cut out even half of his coverage and replace it with pop artists whose output doesn't consist of inferior facsimiles of other peoples' work.
dats fighting talk dat is
"world-class dullards Mogwai"
ooohhhhh, why i oughta....
FISH IN BARREL:
SHOT
mcgee
is right.
unfortunately he too is utterly vacant
at least
since signing the cosmic rough riders/jamc/various other "fucking brilliant" bands before discovering mega-sucessful bands.
i hope he doesnt read this and put it into another one of his god-forsaken bulletins.
The Others.
though I do love MBV
Robbie is rich. Is fat (or was)
So that means he just has to die.
That should be along anytime soon!
Excuse me?
You. Take. That. Back.
Right now.
