The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

Greetings, music lovers.

After a break of several months, DiS goes back to sarf London to the The Windmill (22 Blenheim Gardens, off Brixton Hill, 10 minutes from Brixton tube).

The Date: Sun 1st August

The Bands: THE CRIBS + THE RAKES + THE BOYFRIENDS + DRAT + NUN OF THE ABOVE + THE COBRA

The Damage: £4 (includes free BBQ!)

The Time: 5pm - late

THE CRIBS
Three brothers from Wakefield who are ready to tear rock a new arsehole. They signed to Wichita last year and recorded their debut album at the now-famous Toerag studios. With some chemical assistance, it was completed in eight days and gloriously chaotic and full of catchy hooks - and their gigs are no exception.

THE RAKES
Following in the footsteps of fast-rising stars Bloc Party, The Rakes released their debut 7-inch single on Trash Aesthetics. As an ode to mediocre city salaries, the song was 'The Office' put to 90 seconds of music. The East Londoners have been tagged as 'Pulp meets Joy Division meets PIL down a dark alley,' which is no bad thing.

THE BOYFRIENDS
Er, a little modestly describing themselves as 'a bad Morrissey singing for a bad Joy Divison', they found the NME were a bit more complimentary in their praise, saying 'highlight of the New Cross compilation, Rip Off Your Labels, this is shimmering Smiths-pop with eloquence and bite.'

DRAT
Formed in Belfast but now living in Leeds and Manchester, Drat craft beautiful lo-fi pop which often drifts into shimmering, more sonically emotive Flaming Lips and Delgados territory. Have been known to cover 'Video Killed The Radio Star', in their own unique way.

NUN OF THE ABOVE
This innovative Surrey five-piece have a self-funded mini album under their belts. Such is their style - although their less-serious band name would suggest otherwise - they wouldn't seem out of place if they were to ever find themselves on the same bill as Radiohead and Sigur Ros...

THE COBRA
The core of The Cobra uprooted from Newcastle to London this year to seek fame and fortune and show soft Southerners how this rock'n'roll thing should be done. Thus, they are tonight's natural openers to kick the party off to a suitably raucous start.

Plus guest DJs including Barry Clor (www.clor.co.uk) and the famous Windmill BBQ.

Advance tickets are available for this helluva event: www.wegottickets.com/gig.asp?3396

ALSO, on August 11th we're back with a three band bill of Bella Union signings Bikini Atoll + guests. Grrrreat.

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

Yet another piece of NME crap. Saw these guys live and it was a joke. like the deformed bastard offspring of the libertines and the strokes. If you think this stuff is good then you must listen to some realt shit

Re: The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

uh? They're more like some strange grunge-pop band doing odd-ball party songs. Nowt like the Libs or Str*k*s.

Re: The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

no - DIS crap, thank you very much.

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

Grunge pop? what have you been smoking. if you can't see/hear the libertines/stroke influence then you must be blind/deaf.

Re: The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

How can they be influenced by bands who released records at the same time as them? There has been a billion artsy scruffy punk bands in the past few decades...

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

I love The Cribs. They make fun and energetic music that suits me. I fancy the Boyfriends and the Rakes as well. Lovely.. if only i could go.

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

Re: The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

I thought they sounded a bit like a rubbish Ash when I saw them ages ago, a bit unmemorable to be honest

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

Sort of strokes/libs with a Razorlight edge...HA, only joking.

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

I like the cribs. alot of people shit on them without even hearing them just because they have a "the" at the beginning of their name. I was really shocked that they weren't up for a mercury music nomination this year.

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

lol. That's the funniest thing i've ever heard. i'm shocked people even listen to them. It's not because they have the word "the" in their name either. it's because they r poo

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

Re: The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

No, I assure you, the BBQ is top quality. Their chef is ace but DO go in Winter when he does the best stew in the damn world!!!!

Re: The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

Damn I am in Manchester this weekend...drooling at the thought of sausages and chicken.

The dog next door is one miserable fucker...chuck him a burger when no-one's looking!

Re: The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

no, it's a proper big fat one with lots of coal. rarrr.

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

two songs are downloadable on the boyfriends site. They're very good but too much inspired by the Smiths. You can only hope they are very good live.

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

well i'm going because drat are lovely, nun of the above have a funny name and i want to make my mind up about the rakes.
and my life is insufferably dull
and i've never been to the windmill
and im considering giving the cribs another chance to impress me
and did i mention that my life is dull?
great.

oh, and someone suggested to me that at such things as these, username name tags should be the order of the day. gosh would that be sad.

The Cribs: DiS summer BBQ - Aug 1st

I went to this event and enjoyed it! I must say though, that it was only due to 'The Rakes' and 'Nun of the Above'. I was less than impressed by the other bands, sadly. The BBQ was great, and the venue very friendly. I have posted a short review of the evening on a new website I am associated with:

Check it out if you like :)
