i'll put in a few quid. cheers sean.
Talk to you (all) soon.
1% of the way there already!!!
In the blurb.
I'll donate this week.
you should have done this AGES AGO
(will chuck in a few quid)
He's only joking
And I did do a PayPal thing and a Patreon thing (linked on every page of the site) but it only brings in a little bit extra each month. We've had a few bad months in a row for ads and the server bill is the main outgoing. The pool of developers who've worked on the site over the years and Rik who taught me to code (and sometimes posts on here) have found us a really great service to move over to. More to be revealed soon.
i know your charity means a lot to you bd
glad i came back online before bed just to see this
will donate some money tomorrow
why is it so important to have all the old threads transferred over though? don't cry i'm just asking
Get all the lads to put a quid in, and the girls, say, 50p.
Even if you keep the contents of the music board, the rest doesn't serve much of a purpose. It's basically fifteen years of people talking about sandwiches.
1) they bring in traffic which leads to new users
3) if we didn't move it all over everyone would be signing up as TheOGB
possibly more in future though it's off to a good start already
it wouldn't let me donate £6.66 :(
Can anyone top that as the best description of DiS, ever?
think you should branch out with the new boards, think there is an appetite for online forums again now everyone is bored with Facebook, the dis threaded format works a lot better than most message boards, think if you had one with sub boards for different topics it could take off (and there is already a fairly active user base to jump start it). Let all the old threads die though, fresh start.
I have given.
Sounds like a good deal you got there for the new forum....
also can you do something to entice balonz back again because the new site will never take off otherwise (he has a big fan base)
The system we're looking at has a lot of DiS-like functionality, but without all the bugs.
I'll ask them if they can programme in 1 in 1000 threads doing a proper THREADSMASH to keep you on your toes.
I've sent it across to you.
It'll cost more like £150 a month to run the boards in the future, rather than £700-900 that they're costing at the minute, whilst bringing in far less than the rest of the site...
borges story where sean rebuilds the boards on another server, but in doing so causes the exact same bugs to creep in that plague the current site
the name of the story? 'pierre menard, changer of the past'
imagine new users could actually sign up omg
I am excite for DiS 2: the bloodening
Hopefully this will show up in a lot of people's 'while you were away' bit on Twitter tomorrow morning https://twitter.com/seaninsound/status/739934613024452608
what sub boards do we need?
holiday advice board
Y'know, the repeat offenders who add no value, like the lad from Burnley, and OvertakenByTractors...and Royter?
so you don't need an account to see it.
but I'm a bit overwhelmed by how many wonderful people have donated already. Thank you.
most important question so far
the hundred pound donation is me
tried to donate and it didn't register, not going to click "continue" again in case it charges me five times or something
(a) if the gofundme for dis is broken that's amazing
(b) is it because i tried to donate under the name "barry hogan" ? i thought you could use joke names on gofundme
like loads of them, obviously the classic dis board selection (with reinstated 'rumours' and 'macabees' sections), but then have non-dis ones on the same platform on loads of things sport, gaming, art, photography, things a lot of dissers dabble in be reaching out for a bigger audience. I basically thing sean deserves to own a uk reddit rival.
also, im not saying this to be a dick, but I hope great care will be taken when migrating data in regards to PMs
if that's ok
just but the time I've approved their accounts, the moment has passed...
will double thises be possible?
initially we will probably turn off PMs.
Perhaps there's a different service we can use for personal messaging...
as reading through all the posts about sandwiches is the only thing stopping me from having to do any actual work during the day
where the fuck is bamos when you need him? ;)
I'll donate some money tomorrow. Only fair as i've wasted, i meant spent, 10 years here.
just so i could chuck a few quids in.
Perhaps a sponsored Whethercrawl? Like a sponsored walk, only wonkier.
Why do you need to raise money at all? Wouldn't it just pay for itself in 3 months?
in all seriousness though, it could be an idea to organise a band night if some bands would be happy to get on board and donate any door entry money to DiS?
However, we're not able to borrow this money. We also haven't had the best start to the year for advertising, and have lost some money due to the costs of running the forums. We don't have a guaranteed amount coming in each month, a lot of ad booking are last minute or low volume, so it's hard to make the investment at this time.
Thank you kind and generous bastards. You'll crack my kevlar heart if you're not careful.
however, most bands are running at a loss too, so it's hard to do anything that isn't cutting into their livelihood. What we might make from a show vs the time it takes to organise and risk involved if it doesn't sell out vs just asking people to donate if they value what we do, is a tough balance to strike. Right now I have from about 9pm-midnight most days to work on the site, and a lot of the time I'm working on other consultancy jobs from 8am-8pm and most of my weekends is taken up with artist management, so I can't really organise and promote something like that, sadly.
I enjoy the idea of long standing bugs rolling over to a new forum I must say.
Well... most of us.
Right, sean? And my childhood cat as well. They're all just waiting there for us!!1
The forums cost just shy of £10k to run last year and bought in £2-3K of advertising revenue. So even bringing the monthly costs down are only going to be papering of shortfall that goes back years.
We used to have a steady income from advertising but it's erratic now to say the least. We can't rely on the ads any more. The good months rarely balance out the awful ones.
"Ironically, the new place we've found is far better than what we already have. "
chinny fucking reckon - does the new place do threadsmash? does it??
Sounds worrying, but good luck to you. I'm a regular reader and I hope the site thrives.
I'm not down with archiving this useless content.
Thanks in no small part to your silly website, I'm having to spend most of my money on a bloomin' wedding next month but I'll pop whatever I've got left over to you once my credit card gets re-activated. Some darned twirp tried to use it to spend over a grand on computer hardware last week!
nice one sean!
Nice to see some DiS stalwarts like yer maw and Alan McGee WEEMAN giving too.
Sean, will there be a ^this button on the new boards?
You tight bastard.
I don't mind reminiscing, I just think there is still an awful lot of dodgy stuff in the forums, stuff that reads very sexist now. Part of that is because for a long time there were only what felt like about 30 of us using the boards and we met regularly so you knew strongly what people were about. But that doesn't excuse how it looks. There are some great threads in there and on the music board there's maybe a stronger reason to keep the stuff, but here in Social I think none of it is important enough to try to keep.
I would think a modern board should allow you to select topics for any given post from a pre-defined list so that you can then filter your view. e.g. you might tag a post as both 'music' and 'holidays' and then if someone viewed all posts tagged as holidays they would see that post. Rigidly containing posts within a single forum seems a very regressive way of doing things.
the idea of having several different sections presumably means fragmenting users even more and slowing it down even more. I quite like having serious politics threads next to chocolate bar ranking threads. But maybe I just fear change.
It wasn't so much a suggestion about keeping things organised and accessible for current posters like myself, more to expand beyond this dis site. The threaded reply system works really well, makes things lively and involving in a way most forums aren't, I've always thought it is a shame there aren't more forums like it, so think if dis hosted other forums it would work well. (Totally assuming the new site will have the same threaded system if not it's moot)
when i read a book or watch a tv show i like searching for past threads on it to see what other people thought. 99% of old threads are worthless or broken though i guess
Well done Sean! Well done DiS!
Until it breaks, obviously.
And unless you're MITS who I think STILL hasn't worked out how to use it after 11 years.
Your standard view of the forums would have everything cheek by jowl. It would only filter if you decided to do that.
15 years ago I had an idea for a forum based blog site, basically a reskin of the standard UBB that would have worked much like that filtered idea. But doing it was too time consuming and I had no desire to pay to host it.
everyone misses friendster
I might actually get some work done.
idk why every forum doesn't use threaded replies, makes so much more sense
the worst is having people quote other posts in order to reply, then the reply to that post will show both etc. madness.
Yeah but I don't mean expand it for the current dis users, I mean expand to new audience with the same system, dis community being just one of many based on interests
The system does work well, it allows things to be conversational and go off on tangents while still being accessible, the dis site obviously doesn't work well. A few people not using the reply system properly doesn't negate the benefits of having that system.
Do I need to do anything else? Will the url for the forum change?
didn't think you could do that
I think nested is okay but it can render your forum unreadable quickly and in the case of this forum, even with the boxes, it's not as clear as it could be. The fact that people used to always get confused shows that.
The point about a linear forum is that it actually helps to avoid tangents, which can be a really good thing. There are probably better ways to handle all of this now, like using JS to collapse threads quickly or to allow you to turn threads into their own posts that link through. Plus, the ability to take an out-of-branch post and put it where it should be. That would be useful.
be well good if sean did a runner to marbella and spent the rest of his days drinking mojitos by the pool
I was just really making an off-hand jokey comment. See my reply to Japes below. It's more that even though it's a good idea it obviously does confuse people so there are probably tweaks that could be made.
Quite common with Kickstarters.
I definitely think it should be ditched and the new one having a rolling deletion. Think it is quite inhibiting knowing everything is permanent, like there are some quite serious and personal discussions on here, which are useful but not the kind of stuff you want online forever. Most of us are from the pre search engine generation, reckon if I was a youngster who came across this forum would be pretty put off by the permanence. Maybe have a voting system to archive truly golden threads
Here's to another decade of reduced productivity!
and he has to come back...
I'm now worried that mine might have been a bit feeble.
I've bought cars for less than that.
THE REAL david zxcvbnm THE OTHER ONE IS FAKE
just had to scroll down.
good old Ralph Wilson
.....this would've been far better if i'd just done it and not told you i was going to do it
that anonymous 100 quid one was me.
I wonder if he's heard from Balonz recently
best of luck sean, stoked to see things are looking up :)
the amount i gave would sound like a lot to someone who has no idea what this place has done for me, on the other hand i value what DiS has given me over the years very highly
also i'm very aware of how grateful you are for our support
i think it says alot that you reached your initial target so quickly even tho we all spend so much time complaining, confusing investors, using ad block etc.
You realise deep-blue will pay a lot for the privilege of defending Garbage?
At least he's put a list up of exactly where the money's going, though 'a Citroen Saxo VTS to get me and my guests from DiS Towers to my balcony apartment to various small venues in and around London' seems a bit excessive.
But I was going to donate a token amount with the name "He." every few hours for a bit.
the Greggs racism incident will finally be deleted? Can I just request that anyway?
need to speak to my accountant first
gotten used to them now
I think permanence on some level actually makes people think about what they say. I find the lack of an edit button or a delete button a positive.
There are personal discussions on here, but many of the people who are the subject of those discussions are sheltered by the cloak of anonymity. And reading those discussions and the advice given can actually be useful to people who may have been through those issues themselves and are seeking help.

or nothing at all
Can we please have a non-nested forum. And one where we can check replies to our posts. Please.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm very touched and incredibly overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. Your kindness at the site's time of need is incredibly humbling. I've been quite close to throwing the towel in a lot in the past year or so, and finding different opportunities and seeing them dissipate for no good reason. It has been hard since the relaunch to find any spare funds to fix things and anything we have had has usually gone into adding new ad-slots.
I'm really grateful for your support and looking at ways in which we can make this money stretch and lower the overheads.
jesus, no. the nested feature is amazing.
nah double down
because I've been amused a lot by this place in my many years of lurking, also I reckon I can see my shoulder near St Vincent in that picture, which is nice. Those two dweebs throwing up Nazi salutes on the left are blocking my head though.
Basically free money isn't it.
it's guaranteed the new boards will play in da club.
If we all join hands, we'll make a firewall.
We've supported 100s of acts who've benefited from DIS' love who haven't retweet our campaign but this took some balls and I salute him (and have always been a respectful admirer, beneath the beef) https://twitter.com/Reverend_Makers/status/740595467134832640
We're running at considerable losses every week, so every little really does help.
This is how much it costs to run the server each month (about half if not a shade more of which is the cost of the forums) https://www.instagram.com/p/BGZxOHtx9tx/?taken-by=drownedinsound
We hope to half this bill by investing in fixing and moving the boards elsewhere.
One month this year we had just £300 worth of advertising.
I'm just wondering if there are examples of forums that at least cover their costs, or of websites that are able to generate more ad money who could provide inspiration.
find out what it means to me
I know Popjustice are in the same incredibly leaky boat. As are BestFit and MusicOMH.
I mean, we get 3 million users a year. We need that a day to be making significant sums.
