Expensive breakfasts/lunches that aren't worth it
I just went to get me some toast but I also wanted a nice coffee so i went to this nice little independent coffee shop we have around the corner that I love.
Ordered my 2 slices of toast with peanut butter and a soya flat white.
That'll be £6.10 please.
AH.
I can't say ooh thats a bit much no thanks as they've already popped my toast in the toaster and my coffee is on the go.
Now don't get me wrong, its REALLY nice and the toast is with fresh bread but that loaf cost like £2.50 MAX from a bakery and they're selling two slices of it for £3. Hmm
Is there a thread here?

That is bullshit.
My contribution: All package sandwiches are a con, the cheapest in M&S is probably £1.50 for a terrible thin egg sandwich, but you can buy a whole baguette and pack of nice salami for less than £2 and make your own mega sandwich.
-
We're not allowed a toaster in our office for H&S reasons
so I have to go out and get it if I want some. And I wanted some. Its good bread but could make it myself for like 2 weeks for the price of one day.
-
£25 bacon sarnie
£20 bacon sarnie
£15 bacon sarnie
£12 bacon sarnie
£8 bacon sarnie -
Another thing:
Went looking for a tomato soup the other day and they had one in TOSSED that was only 100kcals. I thought 'ooh must be cheap as its low calorie and practically nothing' NOPE. £3+
-
it's a lot
but you're not paying the bread and the spread. You're buying the conveinece of not having ot make it yourself and thaht's thre premium. I don't find it worth paying because I am control freaky about how my toast is spread.
-
that's obscene
been on self-imposed coffee shop ban but caved this morning and went to pret. was necessary for hangover purposes though.
-

Yeah but you get the same convenience in a greasy spoon
and it would probably cost you 50p.
-
I'd never pay more than £2 for a hot drink.
Rarely more than £1, tbh.
Wouldn't pay more than £3 for a sandwich, unless it was a fancy one in a sit-down place.
urbanfox this'd this -
That's an obscene price.
Went to a polish breakfast place on the way into town on Saturday, had an English breakfast (sausage, bacon, egg, beans, tomatoes) for £4. It was so tasty and good value, I ordered a second one straight afterwards.
-
Nope.
Its the bread. I should have just gone to temples where 2 slices of wholemeal toast with peanut butter is £1.10. But I wanted a nice coffee :(
-
this is London we're talking about here, mate...
not the real world.
-
Sometimes I feel like standing in the sandwich aisle and shouting it all the suits.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING. GO TO THE BAKERY AISLE. FRESH BREAD. CHEAP MEATS. BIGGER. CHEAPER. FRESHER. BETTER VALUE.
I won't stop till the rest of the world cottons on (unless this drives the price of my own lunch up, in which case I'll be very resentful).
-
If you're paying that for a breakfast you'd expect at least some sausage or bacon thrown in
Toast should never be more than £2, that's still paying for convenience but £3-4 for just the bread.
-
I'd go up to £3 for a hot drink
as i like those ones with all the syrup and special milk
PickledOeuf this'd this -
you'll end spending about a grand and a half on breakfast toast a year!
even if you were on, i dunno, 55k, that's quite a hefty bill.
andyvine this'd this -
...
h_y_g: sir, hello, sir? what are you doing. A packeted brie and cranberry sandwich? You know you can buy a fresh baguette and lump of brie and pick your own cranberries for 1/3 of that price!
man: FUCK OFF....and put some trousers onhip_young_gunslinger this'd this -
I love doing this
Except I always by enough for two days worth, then end up eating it all.

I know!
Thats the point of this thread. I'm not happy about it! I'd do it myself if I could but i'm not allowed. I won't be going there again (for toast - coffee is still good)
-
but the bread wouldn't have been milled from wheat
which had been gatthered up into muslin cloths by virgins in France, or whatever.
COME ON (said in the voice of Jobe from AD. Yes, this is my new thing. COME ON.)
-
crazy idea but how about making some toast before you go to work?
you could make a coffee as well?
-
£22 sarnie
in the city, that's not right
ethricdouble this'd this -
Yeah
my point is you're probably paying for a bit of their overhead as well as the specific bread itself, unless their bread costs £25 per loaf, which I doubt.
And if it costs £25 per loaf, then WTF?
-
This
It's not just convenience either, they've got to pay for the staff, rent, utility bills, decor, lighting etc etc. It all sounds obvious but people often forget this stuff and have no idea how it adds up. And being an independent or cooltrendy place they presumably will have spent more on all of the above in comparison to a greasy spoon or something.
also a top end loaf of bread might cost you 4 quid.
deadonthestairs and PickledOeuf this'd this -
It was a multi grain french artisan loaf
rather than Hovis wholemeal which you'd get in a greasy spoon.
French loaf - £2.50 to buy, £3 for 2 slices.
Hovis - £1.30 to buy, 50p a slice? -
paid £2 for 2 pieces of toast the other day.
felt fine handing the money over. it was only when exiting the shop the full force of what had just happened hit me.
-
Its always about money with you
I'm not going to eat toast at 6am and be starving by 9 to save a few bob.
-
You'll be pleased to know that I just accidentally tweeted this thread
How do I disconnect my twitter fROM this place?
-
had a flapjack for breakfast
packet said 65p, got charged 60p
everything's coming up japes
-
ha ha
how are you the only person that ends up doing this?
-
But the same applies to people working in an independent cafe.
However they can sell their toast for £1/£2. I'm paying for wanky bread thats what I'm paying for.
-
and I don't know my left from my right* because I mean left
*I really don't. I had to write L and r on my hands for my driving test.

i'm not the one who started a thread about the price of toast
have some toast in the morning and a cup of coffee
whilst making the coffee put some in a thermos for later (or just make a coffee at work if you are allowed to do this).
take an apple / banana to work to eat at work when you get peckish.
also - stop commuting THREE HOURS to work.
that's crazy. -
Does it help that they took FOREVER to toast the bread?
Like the worlds slowest toaster.
-
so it is
*shut yer
-
If I'm buying artisan bread (which I'm not)
I'd expect artisan toasting methods. Then I'd torch the gaff.
-
COME ON
ten years from now you'll look back and think
"if only i hadn't spent £15,600 on morning toast!'' -
The Pret Chicken Caesar salad is about 25% more expensive than the tuna one
What a bunch of cunts.
-
isn't the other choice making it at home yourself?
think i got into an argument with theo about this once. basically, paying for toast from a cafe is utter LME madness
deadonthestairs and andyvine this'd this -
No, i'll look back and go
if only I hadn't spend £3 on toast that one time
-

I don't eat breakfast early.
I eat it around 10ish.
If I make toast at home, I won't eat it as I'm not hungry and if I was hungry and ate it, I'll be starving by 10am again. This is just the way my body works I'm afraid. -
Doesn't he say OH COME ON when he gets angry?
Not when talking about his suit? I DUNNO
-
you said it was a toaster earlier
this whole thread is a lie isn't it
-
actually i think it was meths
because he went into a cafe on his neon bicycle and ordered two slices of toast (plain probably)
-
do you have the exact money all counted out
and when you hand it over they give you a slighty weary look but then are seemingly somewhat impressed?
-
?
I don't have to. I just wanted toast today as i usually have weetabix but I've had a stomach bug so can't have dairy for a while.

I went for some training in that London
People were getting sandwiches, coffee and snacks from cafes for lunch and sitting (or standing!) in some crappy crowded place for £10 all-in. I went to M&S and got an egg sandwich, a pork pie, a banana and a drink all for about £3-4 max and sat in a park in the sun.
-
and what is the price for toast?...........and what is the price for coffee?.......................
..............................................................................................................................................yes, I am happy to proceed with the payment
-
so why are you asking what the price is for stuff?
seems like a bit of a waste of everyone's time
-
it's a great day for us all
something to tell the grandkids about
-
I rather feel
that employing someone to fetch your toast for you is the way to go
-
HOW COME EVERYTIME YOU COME AROUND
MY LONDON LONDON BRIDGE
-
if for some reason they don't have it displayed
or it's not clear.
thanks for asking.
-
Anyone from the north/outside london up for it?
I'll pay you £5 if you fetch the toast for me. That means you'll make £2 and i won't hit you.
-
But some stuff, you wouldn't bother looking/asking as you know roughly how much it'll be
like if you went to tesco and bought a small bottle of water, you wouldn't really need to look at the price as you know its going to be around the 60-70p mark, no? just me?

fuck having someone else toast my toast...
i'm the only one that knows how to toast my toast.
'excuse me sir, could you please perform a task for me that i only know how to do to my exact specifications'
'of course. that will be six pounds please'
'excellent'.
fuck that mate. it's just like when i paid for a handjob. pointless.

Strangely enough, I was once offered a £6 handjob.
Me telling her I only had £6 was supposed to put an end to the proposition, but apparently £6 was enough.
-
One of the few redeeming features of the area where I work
is that there's loads of greasy spoons run by Italians whose families came over in the 50s so if the fancy takes me I can get loads of toast for like 50p with a guy in a white coat who goes *Ciao, il toast? Izza fifty facking pence geezer*
-
I want to go to the italian greasy spoon for lunch today now
To celebrate not having to go opp north today.
It's that or pie and mash from EAT. Oh man, what to do??

80p for two white toast with marmite or peanut butter in my independent cafe in shoreditch
granted they do slap on the butter like they're icing a cake, unless you tell them explicitly not to.
-
you need to spend more than £5 in itsu to get enough sushi to fill you up
and its not good sushi.
-
It's like £6 a ride
and I only get £5.58 an hour.
-
nah, but only because the sushi place by Farringdon station does 50% off after 5pm
So I go in and buy shit loads for fuck all

Ooh
I didn't know that. I'll definitely be making use of that information soon. Maybe tonight.

Burgers in pubs
Often pushing ten quid or more for a burger and chips. Then you've got to go and get a pint while you are there. They are usually nice mind.

that is FAR too much
i don't think i would ever pay for just TOAST when i am out and about. It just seems wrong.
