Boring work advice thread
I recently went for a job at a rival company to the one I’m at currently, got to 2nd interview stage and didn’t get it.
The director of my current company called me into a meeting on Monday and asked me outright if I was going for another job. It became apparent that someone she knew at the rival company had seen me and told her about my interview…I was a bit surprised that they’d found out and felt a bit on the spot, so I didn’t bother lying and said that I had applied for this job (my face gave it away anyway, I’m sure). She then said a load of stuff about how they didn’t want me to go, were there any concerns I had about my current work that is making me look etc etc…BUT she then said that she would have to tell the other directors that I was applying for another job as they knew we were meeting, and that she would have to tell my manager too. Eventually I got her to let me tell my manager, but I found out I didn’t get the job before telling her so I’m not going to bother now. This was pretty stressful, because obviously I didn’t want to have a meeting in which I tell my manager that I have been actively looking for other jobs.
I feel that I was unfairly put on the spot and she shouldn’t have asked me this sort of stuff, and I definitely think it was unfair of her to tell the other directors and force me into a bit of a corner that way. I am thinking of letting her know that I think I was treated unreasonably. Do you think that what she did was unfair on me, or do you think that she was within her right to do so as the director of a company and the manager of my department? I’m a bit conflicted really.
tl;dr, good work virgin, etc…
