David Beckham is the greatest living Briton.
I think he's brilliant.
He's pretty much the only superstar English football player that is/should be a role-model for chidren. He's charitable, humble, eloquent in interviews and has a genuine love and passion for football and sport in general that goes above and beyond the immense financial wealth it brings him (to the point at which he never, ever talks about his finances - he is the least new money of all modern football players, despite having just as much chance of ending up that way). His wealth is the by-product of his love for football, not the other way round, as is all too often the case these days.
He (inadvertantly) invented the 'WAG', but he and Victoria have never come across as crass in the way that so many football couples have since (I can forgive their wedding). He seems to be the near perfect father-figure to his children and an all-round great family man, despite it having been so easy for him to fail given his global celebrity and the intense level of media scrutiny/intrusion he has had to deal with since being a teenager.
He has managed to rise above almost everything that has been thrown at him, and always seems to be on a journey of personal self-improvement. The moment that springs to mind was when he got sent off in that tournament in the late 90s (or whenever it was) and people were burning effigies of him and sending him death threats and he became a temporary national hate figure as a result. He was only young at the time, but he showed a spirit of resolve that many others would not have been able to muster.
And let's not forget, above all else, he is perhaps the most beautiful man alive today. Truly, truly stunning.
There is no better advocate for Britain and British Sport at this year's Olympics.
David Beckham, I salute you.
