Democracy - two party systems
I’ve just been reading about the implications electorally in Britain if Scotland were to leave the union – including the notion of perpetual Tory majority. Anyway, the author in this case rubbished the notion, suggesting that no people like a one party system, and intuitively this seems right to me. Surely there’d still be a Labour vs Conservatives type contest, even if the future versions are say a few degrees to the right of where they both currently are.
So
(a) do you agree re: Scotland and the UK (or England)?
(b) What are some examples of countries in free democracies that don’t have a straight duopoly of political power – either where one party always gets like 70% of the vote, or there are actually popular third (or subsequent) parties, such that the vote spread across parties is more like 28%/25%/22%/14%/etc than 42%/38%/9%/etc?
