It's National Libraries Day!
Here's a blog post about the service I work for http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/02/02/library-cuts-closures-national-libraries-day_n_1251204.html?ref=tw
My new job involves choosing and then delivering books to people too elderly, frail, and unwell to get out and do it themselves. Some of these people don't leave the house at all (apart from hospital appointments) and the only people they ever see are us, their health visitors and family. In two or three months time this service will be reduced and volunteers will be doing the deliveries but in a deal which means they will be taking fewer books and doing shorter routes.
A lot of the people we've been visiting recently say that they're scared to let 'strangers' into their homes because they're so frail they don't think they'll be able to protect themselves. They'll end up dropping off from the service and lose out on another moment of human contact.
So please remember that there is more to the Save Libraries campaign than smug middle class people retweeting Chris Addison hashtags.
