So it seems
that I'll be headed to Bristol soon with work for a day of activities, what's more I've been volunteered as a marshal. It's not clear what being a marshal will entail precisely, but I'm hoping it's less effort and not high visibility clothing. Nor is it clear what the activities will be, but here are some of the suggestions that I've been asked to comment on:
1. Mechano: each team has to build some sort of racing vehicle from a mechano kit (or similar) against the clock, then each team races their constructs against each other, perhaps timed. Not sure this would work in the space we have, but I like the idea.
2. Helicopters: as above, but with mini helicopter kits. Possibly unmanageable in the space.
3. Relay: as above ideas, but involving some sort of relay within the team, with each team member doing a leg. Perhaps fastest full circuit your team can manage in the time you have left once you've constructed the vehicle?
4. Minefield: we create some sort of maze/minefield that one member of the team has to guide the rest of the team (blindfolded) through. Might be tricky to do on a sufficiently large scale to make it workable in the space.
5. Lego: we build one reasonably complicated Lego construction; each team has the right pieces to build it, but only one member of the team is allowed to view it, and they have to describe it to an intermediary from their team, who then tries to get their team to build it. This has the benefit of being manageable logistically amongst 6 teams, and can be completed within an hour.
6. Something along the lines of Robot Wars -- build and fight things. I don't think there's time, but I would love to see it happen!
7. Lego: working in pairs back-to-back, one person describes a small Lego construction to their partner, who has to build it from the same pieces. Probably not an option given how many people we have.
To host this grand occasion, an hour in a warehouse has been paid for (upfront). Does anyone else work with people who have a penchant for Scrapheap Challenge and an inability to differentiate between what's possible and what's not?
