Stupid Train Prices (First Scotrail Centric)
I'm trying to get from Thurso to Glasgow and back by train. It's a little too short notice for Advance fares but the price hike is bloody astonishing. Instead of getting from Thurso to Glasgow for £13.20. They charge £52.60. That's over fifty quid just to get down to Glasgow. Fuck that. I can still get an advance single from Thurso to Inverness for £10.20 and the Megabus from Inverness to Glasgow for £9.50. The return journey North is only £13.20!
So it seems I can get from Thurso to Glasgow and back for less than a one way ticket from Inverness to Glasgow. It really doesn't make sense. I hate First Scotrail and their stupid pricing schemes. I'd rather travel on the train all the way but I'm not paying an extra 30 quid for the privilege.
Who the hell pays these mad full fares?
This remind me of my student days before the coffin dodgers got their free rides in Scotland on the bus, there used to be internet only fairs for the Thurso-Inverness and Scrabster-Inverness journeys. If the Thurso ones were all booked up you could just buy a Scrabster one and get off the bus in Thurso. It was great. And it was cheaper.
I managed to get from Thurso to Glasgow for £5.50 all in once. The taxi from the Bus Station to the West End was more expensive than the 300 odd mile bus journey. Good times.
What's the stupidest pricing scheme you've come across?
What's the cleverest way you've "beat" the system?
Tell tales of public transport please.
