I saw a good comedy act / pop group thing at the weekend I'm pretty sure most of you lot would have adored
They were called 'Frisky and Mannish's School of Pop'.
They sang lots of pop songs, but subtly altered the way in which they were sang to change the context (eg. 'Joan Osbournes' 'One of us' became a couple of stoners debating what would happen if God came to Earth, they swapped Noel Coward & Lily Allen's vocals around to prove that pop essentially hasn't changed in several decades, did a song all about 'Questions', recreated Britney's comeback at the VMA's) and lots more fun stuff I can't really begin to tell you about as I was a bit drunk and it'd spoil it.
The references were lightning quick and very, very clever, and you REALLY had to know your pop to get it all. It analysed, played around with, lauded, poked fun at and praised pop all at once, with a huge degree of warmth and criticism.
In short, it was a bit awesome.
Anyhow, their myspace doesn't do them too much justice as this older stuff is a bit more homage than deconstruction, but they're playing in and around London right now and at Edinburgh soon. So you should probably go and watch them. If you haven't already...
