Sick leave/standing up to your boss
I need to have an operation next month for which I will need to take a few days off work (at least).
I emailed my boss yesterday to let him know. His response surprised me a bit.. He said that "on the condition that you make up the time in the preceeding and succeeding weeks [WTF!?] I am happy to allow you to take off the day of the operation and one day to recouperate without it coming from your holiday entitlement [WTF!?x2]".
Now, I am entitled under my employment contract to 60 days of paid sick leave in any 12 month period. That is not in the company's discretion - it is an obligation that they pay me for sick leave. I also don't need permission - I have to have an operation, so I am taking the time off.
Should I -
A) Ignore the email. Take 2 days off and work through the pain for subsequent days. Harmony at work is valuable, after all.
B) Stand up to him. Tell him I know my rights, that I'm taking as much time as I need and am not working extra hours to make up for it. I'm not taking any shit.
C) Do as he says - make up the hours, take 2 days off sick and then a couple of days as holiday.
D) Meet in the middle - make up the hours, but explain that I'm entitled to take the time off sick and that I will come back to work when I am able.
????
What would you do, eh????
