My Complaint to the ASA: Fail
Some of you may remember the thread about the bus adverts claiming that 'actually, there is a God, so fuck off', and my intention to send in a complaint to the ASA. From what I can remember it was along the lines of, since the existence of God is an unprovable premise, to make an advert claiming that it's a sure thing is misleading and likely to cause offense to logicians, historians and people with no sense of fun.
Here is the ASA's response: http://i40.tinypic.com/2m6k8qa.jpg
I was surprised and impressed by how they managed to wriggle out of having to adjudicate on such a decision. Apparently since the Christian Party is a political organisation, they are exempt from the code and can say whatever they like about anything:
12.1 Any advertisement or direct marketing communication, whenever published or distributed, whose principal function is to influence voters in local, regional, national or international elections or referendums is exempt from the Code.
12.2 There is a formal distinction between Government policy and that of political parties. Marketing communications (see clauses 1.1 and 1.2) by central or local government, as distinct from those concerning party policy, are subject to the Code.
