I'm going to Washington for Thanksgiving! Very excited. Who has been to Washington? What shall I do?
hardly the same, is it? :/
I'm staying with a family friend who lives there, so hopefully she can show me around. Just wondering if anyone has any good recommendations.
scariest place I've ever been, but that will depend on where you stay. Just go round all the monuments and the Smithsonian complex is fantastic. I can't recall any more offbeat things apart from a statue of a man coming out of the ground which is pretty cool.
it's scary. I guess I won't want to be wandering alone?
but it's a very odd place and I don't know about currently but used to be up there with Baltimore and Detroit etc for homicide rate. In some parts of the city, or so it seemed, there was the nice central bit and then quite close in were concentric circles of real ghettos surrounding it. I imagine like in most US cities, you either live right in the middle or out in the suburbs meaning that even some of the central areas are dodgy.
Be nice to yu turkeys dis christmas
Cos turkeys jus wanna hav fun
Turkeys are cool, an turkeys are wicked
An every turkey has a Mum.
Be nice to yu turkeys dis christmas,
Don't eat it, keep it alive,
It could be yu mate an not on yu plate
Say, Yo! Turkey I'm on your side.
I got lots of friends who are turkeys
An all of dem fear christmas time,
Dey say 'Benj man, eh, I wanna enjoy it,
But dose humans destroyed it
An humans are out of dere mind,
Yeah, I got lots of friends who are turkeys
Dey all hav a right to a life,
Not to be caged up an genetically made up
By any farmer an his wife.
Turkeys jus wanna play reggae
Turkeys jus wanna hip-hop
Havey you ever seen a nice young turkey saying,
'I cannot wait for de chop'?
Turkeys like getting presents, dey wanna watch christmas TV,
Turkeys hav brains an turkeys feel pain
In many ways like yu an me.
I once knew a turkey His name was Turkey
He said 'Benji explain to me please,
Who put de turkey in christmas
An what happens to christmas trees?'
I said, 'I am not too sure Turkey
But it's nothing to do wid Christ Mass
Humans get greedy and waste more dan need be
An business men mek loadsa cash.'
So, be nice to yu turkey dis christmas
Invite dem indoors fe sum greens
Let dem eat cake an let dem partake
In a plate of organic grown beans,
Be nice to yu turkey dis christmas
An spare dem de cut of de knife,
Join Turkeys United an dey'll be delighted
An yu will mek new friends 'FOR LIFE'.
If you're staying with locals then they'll be able to show you around better than any of the tours - but I'd recommend wandering around the monuments late at night, when it's cold and frosty.
The biggest Thanksgiving parade is down Market Street, but there's also one in Silver Springs too.
Yeah - I've been
Strange place - all Freemasonry and Neoclassicism
what are you into?
The Smithsonian is the obvious suggestion - The Air and Space Museum is cool if you're into that stuff, great space rides at the iMax cinema in there
(I did some research there)
but the thing about doing all the touristy political stuff is that despite it looking very Grand it's not really very old so it doesn't feel as loaded with intrigue and soul as walking around the City of London for example, or Oxford/Cambridge, or the 5th in Paris etc
(despite working for an Aerospace co.), anything to do with US history I guess and then obv music . . . and shopping . . . . and eating.
and have a look around Chesapeake bay and the the outskirts of DC for some of the colonial heritage and native American heritage
but was in Pennsylvania a month or so ago visiting my sister...got told off for calling Arlington cemetery 'some old graveyard' :)
is supposed to be excellent
and then I walked up the street to the Air and Space museum and saw the longest queue of the day waiting to go see The Enola Gay
oh the ironing
I don't think they exhibit the Enola Gay anymore
