Maths EggHeads, Answer My Baffling Question

Right, now you're here, I have a Maths question. I was set 7 out of 8 at school for Maths. I got a C in GCSE by a miracle. Numbers confuse me.
So I have a neice who is 5. I am 30. Therefore I am 6 times older than her exactly (for argument's sake). But when she is 10, I'll be 35 and only 3.5 times older than her.
HOW DOES THIS WORK? Surely I should always be the same amount older than her?
Maths = ghay.
