A proposal for the requirement of fully informative thread titles
Now really, it's about the easiest thing to do ever. Just say, in the topic title, what your thread is about. I like to click on to something, and know what is going to be there. I don't like getting confused. I don't like having to click on to stupidly vague thread titles to find something that isn't even close to being worthwhile clicking on. I especially don't like clicking on exactly the same thread ten minutes later because I've forgotten what it's about, or can't remember having already read it because it's so STUPIDLY VAGUE. It takes you no more time to include more information in the thread title, seeing as you can take it out of the post. No more time at all.
To show you just how easy it is to do so, I present some poor thread titles, just from this page alone, and ways in which they can be improved:
I AM CURRENTLY IN THIS BUILDING --- Depending on which angle this was intended to go for (do you just want people to know what building you are in, or would you like to know what building other people are in) the title could be improved along the following lines "A picture of the building I am currently in, at Churchill College, Cambridge", or "What building are you in at this moment".
songs about DiSers --- As it is, the meaning is vague, could be improved by something such as "Incorporate DiS usernames into song titles"
Lakes District suggestions --- Again, this could be interpreted in different ways, I would suggest "I am taking a holiday in the lake district. Any suggestions for things to do?"
HERE'S A QUESTION --- One of the worst offenders, no doubt. No effort was made to make this title in any way informative. Something like "What is the best way to tackle someone's refusal to eat?" would do just fine.
New smell! --- That's great, really. But "I would like to purchase a new aftershave. Which would you suggest?" would be just that little bit greater.
Why was Bamos invited to the Man Utd trophy celebrations? --- He quite clearly wasn't. "A picture of Machester United, in which a person looks vaguely like bamos"
If you could see... --- "FAO: perverts" would suffice, alternatively, it wouldn't kill you to add those final eight words to the topic title, now would it?
A freebie or two (girl-centric) --- Did you get a freebie? Are you just commenting on freebies? Or are you offering freebies? "I have two unused lipsticks to give away free to someone who would like them".
sorry to go back to football (ronaldo-centric) --- There's no reason for this thread to exist in he first place, but if you insist then "Are stop-start run-ups in penalty shootouts legal?"
pasta with ketchup? --- Yes? You want to know the calorie content? If it's ever been served as a dish on Masterchef? No, apparently you don't. "Do you consider pasta with ketchup to be uncouth?" is your question. You typed two questions. And evidently only needed one. You would have saved yourself time by doing this properly.
---
None of those were especially challenging, were they? Exactly. All of those would fit the word filter. Or at least be able to with a slight bit of rephrasing. I hope you will consider this and take that extra .01 of a second to make this experience marginally less frustrating for all of us. Failing that, I propose that I get moderator powers so I can delete them all. Thank you for your time.
