Fact-a-rama: June 4, 2006
My first fact-a-rama. And it combines two of my favourite things in the world. Stuff about old train stations, and alcohol. Winner. It also neatly links my past life as a Midlander with my new life as a resident of the capital city. Double winner.
St Pancras Station in London, serves as the London terminus for the old Midland Railway. Today, if travelling to the capital from places as exciting as Derby, Leicester and Kettering, you'll finish your journey here.
St Pancras was funded by the promise of transporting the Midland's famous Burton beers to London. It sits on a grand platform which was actually originally a large beer store. The internal iron girders which hold the station in its commanding position on its plinth were placed exact multiples of Burton barrels apart.
Beer: influencing train stations since AGES AGO.
