Lunch with Prole: then things that you used to love but quite frankly couldn't give a stuff about no
Oh its all so transitory isn't it? Music history, and its rather short cyclical ways, eh? I'm getting so bored of certain aspects of our beloved musical heritage and although I fall daftly and clumsily in love and awe with anything I can unearth or serendipitiously (spellcheck please, Moribund) come upon, I'm finding it increasingly hard to hold my patient gaze on certain things by right I should love and worship to the grave.
Here follows two bad examples...
EG1: I was reading something today about the 'punk explosion', reviewed by that cartoon owled faced Danny Kelly and I just thought "this is so recycled and derivative that I just want to die painfully on a supermarket floor", yet up to 3 years ago I would have still read and re-read the peice for new snippets or to transport myself back to wherever said story was referring to. Funny, eh?
EG2: I stopped for a moment on the way to the train this morning and realised that the best way to start my day would be throwing a flask of hot coffee into Loud Reed's 'carved in a tree trunk and then defiled with rage' face and to tell him not to be such a professional fucking bore, yet I discovered the other day 4 lovingly filed videos from a Velvet Underground Channel 4 'special from the 90s that I took great pains to stay up and tape and watch and re-watch until my eyes ended up looking like Nico's lungs. Yet now I just yawn at any mention of the Exploding Plastic Inevitable'.*
Is it familiarity breeds contempt you think? What do you really hate or couldn't give a tinker's cuss about now, yet years ago you'd have made love to your grandparents if it meant someone taking it off you.
* Please note the above disdain is not aimed at the music involved, before anyone starts
