Do people have a 'chart' of what they find offensive?
I'm talking about things like racism, sexism, homophobia, disabledism etc.
It struck me the other night, that while the country is in mass hysteria about the fact some fat idiot said 'Shilpa Poppadom', there's a rapper (Beenie Man or something) who is an outspoken homophobe.
But still, people let him play at venues and things. Now, the public wanted Big Brother taken off the air because they were so appalled, and even the Carphone Warehouse pulled their advertising sponsorship.
Imagine if Jade had called that Steps flower, 'Ian Gay' or something. And imagine the rapper went round saying he hated Jews.
People would react entirely differently.
How do people decide what their priorities are when it comes to being offended at certain issues?
Is it because of the holocaust maybe, that people are inclined to be much more anti-racist than they are anti-homophobe or anti-sexist?
