That's right. The first single Empty isn't representative of the whole album.
I'll definitely check it out!
I like their first 2 albums fine, but I'm genuinely surprised at the following they have nearly 20 years later.
It's funny that most of you didn't even listen to it. Stay dumb and hateful.
Talk to you soon.
I listened to it, it was terrible. But not listening to it is not dumb, if people think a band have produced nothing of merit in the past why waste time on them when there is so much music so little time
I bet that you were prepared to hate it. It doesn't matter anyway.
if you promise to stay naive and aggressive!
Of course I was prepped to hate it, I've heard garbage before, I associate it with the lowest barrel scraping of the 90s. You just need to accept taste is subjective and that in this little corner of the Internet the consensus is against you. It's nothing to do with being dumb or unwillingness to give it a chance and everything to do with thinking garbage are terrible
It devolved into pathetic trolling.
pretty much the same band
The cardigans were good though
You enjoy indie bedwetter drivel like of Montreal, Bright Eyes, The Microphones, The Unicorns, etc. That shit doesn't have any hooks.
and neither of them were a god-awful James Bond theme tune.
than dumb and hateful. Your choice.
You tricked the laws of physics: you listened to a 53 minutes album in one minute. Only some boring slow indie that you love would sound good at that speed...
Get your stereotypes right.
Stop me if you can.
Black flag, Minor threat as well as more direct 90s influences and still think it's shit
But who knows, maybe someone more open minded and less Radiohead fanboy will actually listen to it and enjoy it.
Black flag, Minor threat sound nothing like Garbage. They're just some primitive punk bands that do primitive songs for primitive people.
Yeah, but you literally like garbage
was it awul?
imagine a song being THAT shit
(Haven't listened to it)
At least Garbage know how to write songs.
You think they do I think they write abominations, we have reached an impasse, it's almost as if we just have different taste. It's abit arrogant to assume your taste is 'right' which is what you do when you make threads like this.
No worse than a lot of the other insipid dreck being pedalled on popular music forums (if a little dated).
I remember Garbage! From the 90's!
I quite liked the first single.
that we used to love so much and still cling to in the hope that they'll release something great again. Look at all the love for Weezer on DiS despite it being 14 years since they last released anything worth listening to. And I'm still looking forward to the new Nick Cave album even though I know I'll probably be disappointed.
Having listened to a couple of tunes off the Garbage album in the name of research though, I seriously have to doff my cap to deep-blue for sticking with them despite them releasing absolute shite like this.
Something for Everybody. I listened to it a couple of times, never went back to it. Can't even remember if I thought it was good, bad or indifferent.
I love the first Garbage album, most the second, and think 'Not Your Kind of People' off the last album was bloody fantastic.
Are you Dave Lee Travis?
Loved Push The Sky Away, but this being his first album since What Happened Last Year, I'm expecting one of those heartbreaking albums that's genuinely painful to listen to, like Black Star, or Bjork's Vulnicura.
Also, that it's being launched with a film suggests that he's no interest in touring it.
The whole thing's just so, so sad.
but I'm excited about it for the same reason. His last few albums have sounded a bit phoned-in & lacking in gravitas to me, as if he doesn't know what to write about any more.
for sticking to his guns I say.
Remember U2? they released 4 great albums, despite releasing utter shite for the last 22 years.
What's my point? not sure.
They released utter shite.
What exactly were you hoping to achieve by posting about Garbage's new album?
Like it now, it's a grower
It is about deep-blue, which is what he wanted all along.
Its actually pretty good, very impressed
But for the sake of the arguments I opened it. I like to prove to people that they are wrong. ;)
I actually don't care that much about reviews. It's their opinion and I can't change it anyway.
It's even my favorite Devo album. I'm going to listen to it again now.
I wouldn't say I hate them, just haven't bothered with them since I was about 17. And even then, I only really knew the singles. Indifference is probably a fairer word to describe my feelings towards them.
Also indifference is what would describe my feelings towards a lot of acclaimed artists. Not even hate.
Garbage aren't interesting enough to have any strong feelings about
including B-sides, you'd see why they're interesting. They have lots and lots of great songs and they're exciting sonically. It helps that their singer has a good voice and she used it very well.
If you're into electro-rock/alternative dance with some hints of electro-industrial, it's hard to not like them.
People don't owe garbage the benefit of the doubt, they have had enough exposure that people know whether they like them or not and whether to give them another shot. Your view you can 'prove' garbage are good is pretty arrogant, other people's taste is none of your business.
"We're both good in our own fields. I'm sure Garbage couldn't run and manage a successful paper merchants. I couldn't do what- well, I could do what they do, and I think they knew that, even back then. Probably what spurred them on. "
I dropped the speaker down the toilet by accident but I didn't realise until after flushing because the sounds were so similar
That works both ways. It's not your business that I like Garbage. Here's a little advice: stop posting in this topic if you can't stand this band. Don't you have something better to do?
Next time drop the your whole audio system down the toilet.
You imply that Garbage' sounds were so similar to your shit -> means that you're shit too. You produced that shit, right?
I couldn't care less if you like garbage, I only really got involved when you called people dumb and hateful
How many smart and good hearted people do you know?
Calling people dumb and hateful for not liking a band you like is dumb and hateful
deep-blue is an arrogant, sarcastic, funny, tricky persona. Don't take that seriously.
Fuckin hell, they still exist.
It's on Apple Music for now.
if they're not on Spotify?
U2 could get away with releasing average albums because they had strong singles and a large fanbase.
On the other hand, Garbage did the mistake of releasing the career damaging Beautifulgarbage (their third album). It's a decent album but not as good as their first 2. That was the turning point when they weren't semi-mainstream anymore.
None of their albums released after 2000 are as good as their first 2, but they're still enjoyable and have good songs. They're still good for a band as old as them and their live shows are almost always on point.
Right now, Garbage is basically an indie band, with their own label and own management.
How you're supposed to take her seriously?
So far it got decent reviews: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strange_Little_Birds#Critical_reception
4/5 from Allmusic, 4/5 from Slant Mag, 8/10 from Alternative Nation, not bad at all.
deep-blue is smart and loving. He just hates morons, tho. ;)
She's the biggest popstar next to Beyonce. And 1989 is very good, I'm not even kidding.
Mathematically there are no objective music reviews.
fucking wank ha ha
as it's one of only two songs that I could find full versions of on YouTube.
Remember the late 90s when every film seemed to have a "cool" soundtrack featuring Sneaker Pimps, Morcheeba, Republica, Death In Vegas etc etc? It sounds like something from a soundtrack off a film in the late 90s. (cf: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saint_(soundtrack) )
Which isn't to say it's terrible... it's just you'd expect a band that's been around for 20 years not to sound like it's stuck in 1998.
and to be fair to you it blew me away - I'd forgotten what a real tune was, what it felt like to be moved by music - lyrically and musically it's streets ahead of what I normally listen to.
God damn it these Keane and snow patrol tattoos and bono Pandora charm bracelets feel ridiculous now
gave a 4/5 to this new album: http://www.nme.com/reviews/garbage/16490
To be honest, that old NME reviewer was a dick.
Listen to If I Lost You. That's a really great song.
It's your subjectivity against my subjectivity. It's a pointless debate, but that's why music forums exist: for pointless debates. Everyone will keep their opinions anyway.
Step it up mate.
the magic's gone
anyway, my two cents - Vow was a tune
rest not so much
is why deep-blue gives any kind of a fuck, let alone such a massive one, what other people think of his favourite band.
I actually don't give a fuck about what others think about any band, not only Garbage. I said before, I like to argue, that's all. It's like a game and I like to win.
Please listen to this:
Best British 3 piece ever
I win, you lose, simple as that.
Open your own topic, moron.
I FOUND HIS WEAKNESS
Given that they weren't formed by an overrated rock producer and the singer from a failed Scottish indie band
Garbage are fucking shite though
then you'll have the right to call him overrated. He's better than you. Period.
It's not on Spotify and I'm not interested enough to hunt it down elsewhere. But this thread has entertained!
Actually, deep-blue you are like the Donald Trump of DiS. Almost everything you have said has been unpopular, and some of it so out of step with the consensus that it could be considered plain wrong. But you keep going!
On a side note, I can't stand this billionaire jerk.
"Almost everything you have said has been unpopular, and some of it so out of step with the consensus that it could be considered plain wrong".
That's my intention. I never fit with this community and I kind of hate it anyway.
The consensus regarding this band is positive. Read the reviews, most of them are positive. They're not Nickelback or Coldplay. Many DiS users being massive bedwetter indie fans they can't stand this band.
rather than in general. Also, I'm not interested enough to go and find a set of reviews.
I don't like Trump either, but he sure knows how to win a presidental election. And you know how to push all the right buttons when it comes to upsetting "massive bedwetter indie fans".
"And you know how to push all the right buttons when it comes to upsetting "massive bedwetter indie fans"."
Thanks, I appreciate that. Well, they started it. They didn't want a decent discussion, they all trolled and wrote rubbish like "it's absolutely awful" or "it's shit" or whatever, without any explanation why they think it's shit. (They didn't even listen to it, but that's another story.) If it's a trolling topic, so be it. I expected that.
The positive thing is that Garbage don't rely on DiS at all. They keep hatin' the band? Not relevant. All this blah blah blah doesn't matter. Keep hatin', you're funny.
Bit misogynistic that
...says the OP
I haven't expressed any opinion of the band.
But it is no where near as good as deep-fried says it is.
I mean it is 7/10 innit.
By they I meant the other ones. Sorry for any confusion.
Your sheeldz are weak, dude.
Objectively, they're a a very good and capable band. Subjectively, they're as good as you like them.
I said the new Garbage is very good. This is what I really think about this album. Should I lie and say it's shit just to make you feel better? Fuck no.
Have I posted yet in this thread about how i saw Garbage at Glastonbury 2002 and rather enjoyed them?
They never liked Garbage anyway. Too different than their hipster stuff they promote.
Also, I am considering listening to the album but I am worried that it will hinder my enjoyment of this thread. Will this thread be continuing for much longer?
Uh, no not out of my ass. It is my genuine opinion. What would you rate it? 9/10?
You disagree and then agree with me immediately. What gives?
PS deep-fried was a typo (that I don't quite know how it autocorrected to mind you). It wasn't an insult.
"What would you rate it? 9/10?"
Something like that. They're not perfect in any case.
Why bother anyway?
you fucking piece of shit, how dare you
easy now, chew bar, I think the suggestion is that they were even BETTER a while before that and had I seen them a while before that, I'd have REALLY rather enjoyed them.
That's right. maOsm overreacted like usual.
but I like Garbage. Last album was pretty weak (3 good songs and whole lot of ordinariness), but albums 1 and 4 were excellent, and 2 and 3 were pretty decent too.
So I'm looking forward to hearing the new one.
My office overlooks the Rock City loading bay. They've got a big purple lorry full of their equipment, but no tourbus. Next to this lorry is a small grey car. Perhaps the band arrived in that? They probably have a small tin of boiled sweets to make the time fly while on the road between gigs. Also, for what it's worth, this purple lorry has yellow accents. Even though it says "you rock, we roll" on the side, we can't entirely eliminate the possibility that they're carting their equipment around in a repainted UKIP lorry. Also, their road crew appears to have a uniform - red t-shirt with black Adidas trousers. And there's a couple of guys sawing wood next to the lorry.
Or at least, some guy's barking numbers into the mic.
Is this their brave new direction? Hahahahahaha.
They're in for a treat tonight! This guy's got quite a steady beat.
Ah, that classic Garbage tone. This is it: The Garbage Sound.
He's only playing a couple of chords, and he's not playing them to any set rhythm. Sounds like an open G and the relative minor. But still, there it is: The Garbage Sound.
Thanks to the YouTube Title script I don't even need to click that link...
Stop being a cow, funkycow.
You have a review to read if you're interested.
I said "I actually don't care that much about reviews". THAT MUCH is the keyword. It doesn't mean at all.
You're wasting your time and our time.
Everyone's going to give it a listen and report back with a considered opinion, right?
I would have "live blogged" the whole show otherwise.
I was pleasantly surprised by the new Beth Orton and Death In Vegas albums so really thought there was a chance Garbage had pulled something out of the bag. But they haven't.
This album is a grower.
(not sure if ironic or for real...)
this is Garbage at their most Curvesque. In terms of some of the sounds, that is, rather than the songwriting — though the opener would fit into any of Curve's albums pretty seamlessly.
I've never agreed with the Curve/Garbage comparisons previously, because the songwriting / song structure is so different. Curve songs are generally led by the bass and the beat, whereas Garbage are much more pop and vocal-driven. Consequently, for all the surface similarities in sound (female vocals, guitar distortion & effects pedals, touches of electronica, big bass sound), the way they're mixed together is very different for each.
But the overall sound of the new album, or the first three tracks at any rate, is much closer to Curve's than previously — almost as close as you can while still working within a pop-song structure.
Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
and although they were OK, it was the least good that I've seen them. They seemed rather subdued, possibly because of line up changes, possibly by events in Orlando, possibly because the new songs seem very one-paced.
The new album is similarly a bit down beat. Any song on its own sounds OK, but the overall effect is unduly dirgey. They've clearly tried to do a retake on the sound of their first album, but it doesn't quite ignite.
I don't think many of these new songs would translate too well live. But at least they're still playing many old tunes.
They probably "rocked the house" in Nottingham last night!
It means they're not a bad band like some DiSers believe. This "bad" is relative, because Coldplay are considered bad, but they're really better than that.
Again, your opinion. In the same way my opinion is that you have a shit taste in music. Just an opinion, nothing personal.
The live version is very good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4KmJgpgSWU
I've rarely seen a bad review of their shows. They're a great live band, despite their age.
"Garbage remain a largely chemistry-free proposition"
"the overall impression was that Garbage's greatest moments are already behind them"
Read this one instead: http://www.gigwise.com/reviews/107368/garbage-live-at-londons-troxy-review-setlist-photos-new-album-tour
I'll quote the final part:
"Butch Vig is sadly not in attendance, but the remaining three add up to more than the sum of their parts. Even beyond Manson's feline attitude, their presence, charisma and character remain as gripping as ever. You can hear a pin drop as they return for the encore of new record highlight 'Even Though Our Love Is Doomed' after the volatile catharis of 'Only Happy When It Rains'. Sealed with the kiss of the pop-punk abandon of 'Why Do You Love Me' and the synth-pop gem of 'Cherry Lips', you're left struck dumb by the awe that can only be inspired by true greatness. That can only come from a real, fearless originality - sustained over decades. Long may Garbage reign, the weirdos will always need you."
It's obviously VERY discomforting to read a slightly unflattering article about a band you like!
What happened to Butch Vig?
that when the band returns for their encore you can hear a pin drop
Night time loneliness is probably the worst thing they've ever done.
and just skipping through songs now...
Lots of lovely little touches to this album that I really like. There's a general "sonic" to it that really works for me. As I was saying above, it much more Curve-sounding in terms of its palette. Unfortunately, the song-writing doesn't do it for me. Too often it just feels
by numbers" — and I fucking hate that expression in all its laziness, so if I'm using it, I ain't using it lightly. And it's compounded by being so driven by the vocals.
I'll take "Empty" as the big POP song that every Garbage album should have. The sound of "If I Lost You" is pleasing enough to counter the straightforwardness of the song-writing and the high mix of the vocals. Fuck me, "So We Can Stay Alive" is 100% Muse, which I both like and don't like. "Blackout" and "Magnetized" are acceptable as album tracks.
The problem is, there's another 6 album tracks, at least 3 of which do nothing for me, while the other 3 are redundant, because the allotment of tolerable album tracks has already been filled.
I'll probably give the album a few more listens yet, and some of the songs I don't care for at the moment may well grow on me. But sadly it's not a candidate for top ten AOTY. It's better than the Radiohead album, but not by a whole lot.
And that dilutes a bit their impact. They're also not as catchy as those gems from their first 2 albums. It's still a very good album in my opinion. Not AOTY though.
You must wage war with everyone else on the music board, but you may only do so through defending Garbage. deep-blue will be remembered as a true hero.
