It is a good song. I wonder if I can allow myself to look forward to the album now, having found their last couple of albums to be decent but somewhat disappointing despite having some great moments.
being eaten up by all the recent releases. This is a great lead single. Never could understand how so many think they've dipped in quality. I feel like they've now made 4 great albums and are about to release a 5th. Amazingly consistent and they're not that different from the first two so not sure how you like those and not these. Valhalla got Who's in Control?, We are Sound, Luna, Living is so easy, Cleaning out the rooms, Stunde Null...the great songs are endless on that and all very BSP.
while we're here though, gotta stand up for DYLRM? - basically as good as Decline to me, never understood the "boring, overblown rock" comments. It's full of energy and cool lyrics and one of the prettiest songs in ages in No Need To Cry.
Nice mixture of the more epic bits of Valhalla with (especially towards the back of the album) some really beautiful Open Season esque stuff. Quite compact too, which should please anyone annoyed by the sprawl of Valhalla.
I wasn't gonna bother seeing them in Belfast on this tour but they're playing a great little small venue so I've been tempted. If they're doing 2 sets then I'm gonna have to go.
My initial reaction is disappointment, but we'll see. Monsters of Sunderland and Spring Has Sprung seem to be the highlights so far but there's nothing here I love yet.
But I was bored listening to this album. And I was really looking forward to a quieter, meditative record along the lines of the lead single, which suggested more of a Yo La Tengo sound.
I'll give it plenty more chances, but it's still a shame.
is super terrific, but they are in danger of being my next Band of Horses (who had super-terrific debut but now no longer have any interest in new releases).
I can't think of many bands as totally consistent as BSP. Maybe I'm lucky that I didn't get into them until Open Season (due to not listening to much 'indie' music until then mainly) so Decline isn't as totemic for me as a lot of people, but each album does a great job of having its own distinct feel whilst still feeling totally BSP. Besides, this one is a major grower - give it a few spins, and Hail Holy Queen, Loving Animals and Radio Goddard will never leave your head.
Hmm, from the sounds of this it's definitely a listen to stream before buy job, which is not something I though I'd have to say about BSP.
Every album since Decline gets trashed on these boards and they're all great. Does no one here like their soundtrack work? They've always been a band that straddles pixies post punk and more pastoral, prettier stuff. They've always straddled that line better then anyone. I'm actually excited to hear its a more meditative, slower record.
but when the other fella starts singing my heart sinks a little bit - felt like this on all their albums. First impressions on the new album - pretty good, liking the wonky brass (not Abi Fry!)
Q reckons it's their best, Mojo calls it Mesmeric and there's a great Incendiary review that seems to really understand the band who praises it. Clearly it deserves more then quick dismissal which is becoming the du jour of the DiS crowd.
Based on the both the lead track and the fact that plenty of time time has passed since the disappointment of DYLRM?, I'm actually thinking about how good the first two albums were looking forward to it and hoping they can get back to some kind of form.
I do find it a bit odd how you're accusing anyone who's said anything vaguely negative as being dismissive.
Sometimes people think things you like are shit. Deal with it.
Whether it surpasses Valhalla I'm not sure yet, requires more listening. Doesn't get anywhere near OS or Decline. Still best UK band of the last 10 years regardless.
Not really as good as the first 3 but probably better than Valhalla - not as many highlights but more consistent and never sounds like they're trying too hard - and not far off DYLRM I think. The production and general mood of it reminds me a lot of Open Season.
single or album ?
Why, yes
It is a good song. I wonder if I can allow myself to look forward to the album now, having found their last couple of albums to be decent but somewhat disappointing despite having some great moments.
Please please don't get my hopes up!
The last album was dreadful. The one before pretty bad, but not AS bad.
they really do split opinion don't they. I think Valhalla Dancehall
is their finest hour to date ! I think they improve with age. Can't wait to hear the latest offering.
In that case, you'll be pretty gutted if the next album's good, then?
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;-P
finest to date. Improve with age. Can you see where I'm going with this !
I like the single a lot
nicely understated and they've dropped the daft rock bombast, which is good. Have heard the album is similar and not too long (c.40 mins).
There have been some really good stuff on the last couple of albums but also a fair bit of dross. Hopefully this one is more consistent.
From the sounds of the demos for the songs on the album
It'll be a good one! Some great tracks on there. Interested to hear what the proper production will do for it.
Have to agree re the general comments on the last two albums,
really inconsistent and, in the case of Vallhalla, far too rambling. Fingers crossed for this one.
Just had a listen - sounds lovely.
shame to see any advance hype on this
being eaten up by all the recent releases. This is a great lead single. Never could understand how so many think they've dipped in quality. No, first two great but the second too patchy.
Despite my comments above I do prefer Valhalla to DYLRM though.
Definite krautrock feel to it
Reminded me of Fujiya & Miyagi. Bodes well for the new album.
I've always felt BSP have a great album in them and this is really promising as a lead track.
Admittedly I said the same about DYLRM? and that turned out to a boring, bland tediumfest but hopefully this time...
Decline - Open Season ---------VD-DYLRM ?
Decline---------------DYLRM--Open Season----Valhalla
Decline=DYLRM-------Valhalla-Open Season
Valhalla - DYLRM - decline - Open Season
Decline - Open Season - DYLRM - Valhalla
*Open Season - Decline
man of aran >>> everything else
except for the Zeus EP
that was really really good too
lovely sounding song, sounds a touch different from anything they've tried before too
while we're here though, gotta stand up for DYLRM? - basically as good as Decline to me, never understood the "boring, overblown rock" comments. It's full of energy and cool lyrics and one of the prettiest songs in ages in No Need To Cry.
yeah, I feel like it gets a rough ride
it doesn't really deserve, aside from a couple of songs it's great.
Agree on No Need To Cry as well.
If I'm honest, I actually remember literally nothing about it.
So it might be better than I think it is. Although the fact that I can't remember how a single song on the album goes doesn't bode well.
EASY! EASY! EASY! EASY!
It's a really great album
Nice mixture of the more epic bits of Valhalla with (especially towards the back of the album) some really beautiful Open Season esque stuff. Quite compact too, which should please anyone annoyed by the sprawl of Valhalla.
hooray
less sprawl would definitely be good.
then you should like Open Season
which had very little sprawl. Decline was sprawling as well. I've always thought that was one of the characteristics of the band people liked.
Anyone seeing BSP on this tour
they're planning on doing two sets per gig, both before and after supports, so worth getting there early
Oh nice.
I wasn't gonna bother seeing them in Belfast on this tour but they're playing a great little small venue so I've been tempted. If they're doing 2 sets then I'm gonna have to go.
BSP have just tweeted that the album will be streaming on
the Guardian website from noon today.
It was leaked yesterday.
I continue to be amazed by how they do it.
Yeah so

My initial reaction is disappointment, but we'll see. Monsters of Sunderland and Spring Has Sprung seem to be the highlights so far but there's nothing here I love yet.
can't believe i ever used to find this band not boring
well the first and bits of the second do hold up
but christ this new one is incredibly boring
BSP are one of my favourite bands
But I was bored listening to this album. And I was really looking forward to a quieter, meditative record along the lines of the lead single, which suggested more of a Yo La Tengo sound.
I'll give it plenty more chances, but it's still a shame.
Had a listen last night, nice enough but not a lot to get excited about, the first track is really nice though.
Valhalla was all over the place and a disapointment too. I think this will be the first of their 'proper' albums I don't buy.
Mixed reviews...*clicks tongue*
British Sea Power's Decline
is super terrific, but they are in danger of being my next Band of Horses (who had super-terrific debut but now no longer have any interest in new releases).
Really?
I can't think of many bands as totally consistent as BSP. Maybe I'm lucky that I didn't get into them until Open Season (due to not listening to much 'indie' music until then mainly) so Decline isn't as totemic for me as a lot of people, but each album does a great job of having its own distinct feel whilst still feeling totally BSP. I don't buy it.

sounds like you've already decided you're going to excuse how boring it is by calling it "meditative" and "slower"
I'm with you fella. They are ace. Long may they continue.
I'm gonna say this before I check out for westcoast bedtime
In those 4 seconds per song transition entering the tracks into iTunes...gave me very surprisingly positive vibes regarding this record.
And my 40-second album evaluations are pretty darn accurate.
*if Al Gore hadn't invented the internet, I would have*
Will probably get slaughtered for this
but when the other fella starts singing my heart sinks a little bit - felt like this on all their albums. First impressions on the new album - pretty good, liking the wonky brass (not Abi Fry!)
hah, complete opposite for me - he's responsible for most of my favourite BSP songs
Blackout, The Land Beyond, No Lucifer, Down On The Ground, A Trip Out, No Need To Cry, Mongk II, Cleaning Out The Rooms ... what a lad
Good songs all of them
His voice is just too wafer thin for me - would prefer Yan to do em all
How Will I Ever Find My Way Home?
One of the best.
Once More Now
Probably my second favourite BSP song (behind Lately obvs) these days.
Other reviews are great
Q reckons it's their best, Mojo calls it Mesmeric and there's a great Incendiary review that seems to really understand the band who praises it. Clearly it deserves more then quick dismissal which is becoming the du jour of the DiS crowd.
also the "proper" DiS review was fucking atrocious
FWIW I intend to listen to this album with an open mind.
But they do regularly get dismissed out of hand as being
'shit since the first album' which whether you like the following albums or not, clearly isn't the case. That's why I think people get annoyed..
I think we're starting to go too far the other way with this whole 'instant review' outrage
I'll give this more time because it's a band I adore, but you are still, y'know, allowed to have an opinion after one listen.
I've just managed to grab a ticket for theirs for The 100 Club
next week.
Better than DYLRM.
Whether it surpasses Valhalla I'm not sure yet, requires more listening. Doesn't get anywhere near OS or Decline. Still best UK band of the last 10 years regardless.
They were rubbish last night on first date of the tour.
...in Exeter. Looked and sounded like a reunion band who hadn't played together for yonks.
Hey so yeah I'm really enjoying this.
Not really as good as the first 3 but probably better than Valhalla - not as many highlights but more consistent and never sounds like they're trying too hard - and not far off DYLRM I think. The production and general mood of it reminds me a lot of Open Season.
Yeah.
Looks like this thread does not want to return to the front page.
