Obvious troll is obvious.
also, your mum!
not troll
i chose those artists because in my mind they are by far the worse recipients of over inflated praise.im not saying they are bad bands btw.well in husker du's case i am
great thread!
daehoidar
there's an article on p4k currently about new Daft Punk tracks being registered
any track titles? no. music bites? no. just track length. they're all (currently) untitled. make of that what you will.
bit keen
although i'd be lying if i said i wasn't pants-shittingly excited for the new Daft Punk album
mind you some of the best songs are untitled
like that interpol one and that one by NMH so maybe it's a sign
why am i posting on this fucking awful thread
you're not even trying, OP. shut it down, girl_on_film
why's it awful?
is it so wrong to actually admit thinking some of these sacred cows are overrated?is their not a single artist you think gets a little too much praise at the expense of others?
daft punk have not released a genuine stunning album for about ten years, yet blogs everywhere are hammering the hell out of the "news" that some track length times have been found!!
there are so many in dance music right NOW doing so much more than daft punk, yet daft punk(the old guys the rock press understand) get the press.
yeah it's fucking weird how massively loved bands who've released massively popular albums
go on to get a massive amount of attention. it's really weird i can't work it out. i guess i'll continue listening to Pearl Jam's 'Ten' while wearing my Nirvana t-shirt and being sulky until i find out
shut it down?
does it offend you that much i think some bands are overrated and i had the temerity to say so.
yes it offends me
you're so edgy
im not trying to be edgy.what im trying to do is say i think this horrible consensus builds up around some bands/rappers/albums etc,and it breeds this unhealthy obsession with the past, and you end up at a point like just now where someone gets shouted down for saying they think some bands are a bit overrated.
did you notice with the exception of husker du i never said any of these bands were actually crap.
All you've done is list some bands you don't like, though.
At least that's what it boils down to. We have a 'bands you hate' thread every few days but always worded a little different. Nothing wrong with fighting against the canon but you'd better come blasting with tank. As it stands here you've come with a water gun, there's no argument, just some band names. SHOW YOUR WORK.
Beat me to it
you've got it wrong
i think maybe the best writer working within the confines of music journalisim just now is andrew nosnitsky,he's wrote quite a few pieces recently on the dangers of anointed greats and the whole narrow mindedness it helps breed, read his pieces on good kid mad city and spaceghostburp, and they sum up close to what im trying to say.
ill try and write a wee piece explaing my thoughts as well.and i DONT hate those bands
If you're not a troll and you're actually going to write something on this
then i really encourage it, and good luck.
Noz is great, yes,
but he has like 7 years of writing to back up his claims. You've got a handful of posts and no explanation, context or reason to why you've made your claims. Again, not saying you 'hate' these bands, just that that's what it's boiled down to with what you've presented.
In other news
'spaceghostburp'
it was a mistake
put my argument in the wrong context
i should have called it 'a lack of bravery/originality in the mainstream music press'.
there's this incredible cannon of music that tends to be sidelined by the same bands over and over again,i'm not asking for blatant obscurantism just a little bit more originality.how many think pieces on ian curtis do we really need?why not a piece on echo and the bunnymen, bauhaus etc.
everyone is on kendrick just now he's made one of those "great" albums, instead of never ending pieces on good kid,why dont they step out their comfort zone and try a piece on futures warped pop music.
instead of pac, biggie or the wu give three six maf's classics some inches.
everyone knows about odd future, why not look into ace hood,100's,ghetts instead.
basically if your gonna look back make it as wide a pool as possible, acknowledge so much more of the past and present instead of constantly getting tied up in "great album syndrome".there are so many artists deserving of huge amounts of praise, lets give it to them all instead of it always being the same culprits.i just dont think the obsession with a limited number of greats is good for music at all,it leads to that horrible sgt pepperisim where something becomes beyond criticism.
i know my arguments a little convoluted and strays in parts, but hopefully you can get the gist of what im trying to say
I dont disagree with any of this
but yeah its a completely different topic/argument than what you started with.
We kinda touched on some of this stuff (by way of an Asap Rocky discussion) in the hip hop 2013 thread. http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4422708#r7277420
yeah
i worded the whole thing wrong, the point i was trying to make is the same but i went about making my argument quite badly in the first post.
ta for the thread
rather than writing a wee piece
why not link to the ones you mentioned which are mentioned by actual writers who can write actual words with actual arguments?
dont know how to link, ill work it out asap though.its quite easy to find the articles with google though.
i made a more in depth argument just above here with actual words and everything.i dont imagine it'll cut the mustard with you though
The reason nobody cares
is you get a thread like this every week so it's all been whined about already.
Threads like this always remind me of
the Louis CK skit about how his daughter just answers every question with "Why?" then it gets really abstract and just ends up with "BECAUSE SOME THINGS ARE AND SOME THINGS ARE NOT."
i'm irked :D
those two bands
perfect examples
The praise that Husker Du receive is completely justified
what with them being brilliant.
Thanks.
I used to dislike Pavement
then I decided to like them
okay, chill out cat_race
So...who do we think this is?
Is it a resurrected deep_blue ?
Nah, d_b actually had well thought-out arguements
and a broad taste in music.
explain please
i dont have a broad taste in music?
what exactly has lead you to believe i dont have a broad taste in music?
you're whole righteous anger has just confirmed to me even more why i hate the whole notion of bands beyond reproach.
Dude, I don't actually mean what I said above
it's a joke about how robotic deep_blue seemed.
(For the record I actually thought d_b was a great poster and I'm sure your taste in music is just fine, i don't have an opinion on it either way)
all those kids in their tshirts eh?
well i was there at the time and it was shit. there was one time that me and gary got the tram to sale and had a nice chicken meal later but apart from that you can get out.
Animal Collective
Guns n Roses

Ha ha, I think guntrip posted that same link the last time
I had a go at gnr.
Worthy of a re-post any time their name comes up tbf.
Garbage
no, he has a point
just because you can't appreciate Hüsker Dü and other great music
doesn't mean it's a bad thing that they get loads of praise from everyone else.
learn to deal with not being right.
you can't *insist* on something being rubbish
when so many /discerning/ people agree on their greatness.
you can say you don't like them, but getting all worked up about their elevated status is pretty futile.
and if you're criticising them
articulate yourself better.
*insist*
i said husker du were junk, big deal.im sure you think some bands are junk.
im not exactly getting worked up about it.
okay finr
I just think it's counter-productive to start a thread about bands you think are overrated, complaining that it takes away the spotlight from other bands/artists that don't get as much praise.
like, you're still talking about them, and now other people are joining in.
(I don't think Hüsker Dü have more than their fair share, fwiw. regardless of what you think, most people who've heard the band would agree they're worthy of eulogising. they're hardly deserving of any backlash, at the least; even if you don't appreciate their music, they made it in the right spirit. pick more worthwhike targets, I reckon).
also
in all honesty husker du dont really get that many inches,so it was a bit daft of me to even include them in the thread.
they are vastly overrated though
i'd agree with that
probably yeah
i actually wrote a fairly brutal take down(which im sure people will disagree with) that iv hummed and hawed about posting all night,.but when i look at it and judge it with any objectivity it comes across as a bit dickish and angry tbh.forums always have enough plonkers without me joining the fray.
there's been some anger i never expected from HD fans,so im gonna go look out zen arcade and hopefully it'll finally gel and i'll find out what i've been missing. :)
for the record, I wasn't fussed at first
but I persevered because so many people really believed in the band, felt genuinely rapturous about their music.
they used to seem like just another punk band until I gave myself to the music. I found something beautiful in the distinctive torrents of guitar, in the head-over-heels drums, a real complex emotion in the vocals... I like a lot of hardcore, but there's something really special about HD at their peak.
...I mean, there's something in the textures (serated fuzz tone to guitar, the heavily EQ-ed sound to the drums) and the barrage of melodies that is transportive. I thought the idea of a hardcore double album was silly, but it's a genuine trip. like falling headfirst into a maze of graffitied concrete walls, or the acid-tinged tip on the cover.
veered off into talking exclusively about 'Zen Arcade'
you can hear it before that... on 'Land Speed Record', it's like they're falling over themselves, like they're sudden conduits for this transcendant energy.
The Strokes?
i dont want to argue
when i listen to them i cant get past the production and mixing, its really tinny and thin sounding and its not some hatred i have of lofi records, most my fave records sound like they were made in a bin.haha
am i alone in thinking this?
genuine quesion,im not flaming, quite interested to hear a fans view
the production on their biggest records isn't thin
rather the guitars and drums have a very distinctive sound, very much in the high-mids.
I happen to think this is really great. it sounds incandescent (hah :) ).
makes it sound of its own time/place
