Your top 5 underappreciated albums
Not just an excuse to out-indie each other, but imagine of you were compiling your top 50 albums and a few stuck out as not getting a load of critical/community love. You adore them, and you think more love would be showered on them if more people heard them. Let's list five of those each and talk about how great they are.
The OP's 5:
Gathered Tones - Trouble Books
Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow - Hammock
Kiss Each Other Clean - Iron & Wine
Plantation - Arrange
An Album by Korallreven - Korallreven.
God I love those 5

Hmm,
(x) is greater than (y) - Negative Snow
Peeps into Fairyland - Happiness
Hanne Kolsto - Riot Break
Hanne Kolsto - FlashBlack
Promise and the Monster - Red Tide
I genuinely don't get the lack of Hanne Kolsto coverage over here.
I'd have to say
The best of the beatles.
boom
Gun Shy - Screaming Blue Messiahs
Saint Julian - Julian Cope
Raise - Swervedriver
Arnocorps - The Ballsy EP
Civil Civic - Rules
:D
I'M BALLSY

Not all underrated, just some deserving of more praise than they get.
The Will Be Fireworks - There Will Be Fireworks. Not underrated, just not enough people have heard it and it's incredible!!
*
Digital Ash in a Digital Urn - Bright Eyes (not underrated as such but everyone goes on about the rest of the back catalogue so much that this one gets missed out a lot)
*
All the Aereogramme albums - Aereogramme. Seriously, not enough love for Aereogramme.
*
Tides & Tides - Sixstarhotel. Much like TWBF, I feel not enough people have heard this and it's excellent!
*
Canopy Glow - Anathallo. Think they might have split now, had the pleasure of supporting them in Glasgow a few years back and was stunned by how brilliant they were. Lovely people too. Think one of them now plays in that band FUN that are annoying the life out of me whilst being played 10 times a day on the radio at work.
I reckon Digital Ash counts
Considering I'm Wide Awake is the only album a lot have people have heard, and yet Digital Ash blows it out the water.
Massive ^this re. Aereogramme
Especially My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go, which is an absolutely beautiful album.
Er, probably something like this:
Hymie's Basement - Hymie's Basement
Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain
PJ Harvey - White Chalk
Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton - Knives Don't Have Your Back
Circa Survive - On Letting Go
Or maybe some Cyann & Ben (doesn't really matter which album, they're all ace)
had totally forgotten that cyann & ben existed.
thank you <3
Massive ^this to Circa Survive
absolute this to felt mountain
I dont understand how this isnt in all top 10 lists (apart from the mor ones)
Velocity Girl - Simpatico
Ballboy - A Guide For The Daylight Hours
Madder Rose - Panic On
Cheese On Bread - The Search For Colonel Mustard
Tsunami - A Brilliant Mistake
Belly - King
First half of King is blistering
though as a whole I prefer Star.
Both King and Star are brilliant. I prefer the more pop-ier King to
Star which is great but slightly darker.
Michael Hoenig - Departure From The Northern Wasteland
The Necks - Drive By
Woob - 1194
Module - Imagineering
Mystical Sun - 26000
That Hoenig album is incredible
Augie March - Strange Bird
The Good, The Bad & The Queen - s/t
The Black Crowes - The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion
BLK JKS - BLK JKS
The Cardigans - Long Gone Before Daylight
Great thread...
1. Swirlies - They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days In The Glittering World Of The Salons
2. Bowery Electric - Beat
3. New Kingdom - Paradise Don't Come Cheap
4. Whipping Boy - Heartworms
5. Bows - Blush
I haven't seen anyone mention Bowery Electric in a while. I used to
love Lushlife. Freedom Fighter is a great song.
townes van zandt - live at the old quarter. better than ANYTHING dylan ever did.honestly
jacuzzi boys - so indie it never even had a physical release!it is honest to god a classic garage rock/pop album.ignore their second LP,they tried to grow up and just got crap
emmylou harris - wrecking ball.best thing daniel lanois ever did
project pat - ghetty green.if you like southern trap/rap give this a go..please! :)
mean jeans - on mars.amazing garagy pop punk.sounds like the ramones covering green day.
Joanna Newsom - Milk-Eyed Mender
Everyone (rightfully) bangs on about how great Ys is, but I rarely hear people talk about how beautiful her first record is, especially seeing as she was about 20 when she made it.
Orthrelm - OV
Absolutely insane metal riffs/drums duo play Lightning Bolt-esque stuff (but a bit death metallier) for 45 minutes with no let-up. Super, super intense and sort of unlistenable but amazing at the same time.
White Denim - all of their stuff but let's pick D as an example
Amazing super technical but poppy folky-math rock type stuff (doesn't really capture everything because they change up styles quite a lot over the course of an album). One of the most consistent bands I can think of too, having released 4 amazing albums since 2008.
Titus Andronicus - The Monitor
I thought they were relatively successful but then realised that Patrick Stickles still lives with his parents. They should be fucking millionaires, this is the best album recorded since Marquee Moon.
Daughters - Canada Songs
Best grindcore/post-hardcore/noise/whatever band in my humble opinion. This album is 12 minutes of blistering radness. They throw so many ideas into so little time and aren't afraid to stick in some really fucking groovy bits too. Ace.
PS fuck off if you're going to say something cunty
about Joanna Newsom being shit/caterwauling or whatever.
FUCK OFF
Joanna Newsome is
Not as good as White Denim. I am quite happy to sit through all of their albums at once, and there is only one track I don't like. Though I don't know which one it is, it's just got unnecessary noise on it and feels out of place. Love White Denim.
OV!
proper trance music.
I think I prefer Hell Songs
But good shout on Daughters.
Massive fan of all three of their albums
but Canada Songs might as well be by a different band, and is so far superior to the other albums in that sort of genre (The Locust/Some Girls/An Albatross etc. etc.) that it seems weird that it isn't more lauded.
Hell Songs & the S/T are amazing but are competing against more bands because they're a less specific sound if you know what I mean - like they obviously owe a debt to The Jesus Lizard etc.
Bonnie Prince Billy - Master & Everyone
I don't see this getting too much credit - I played it to death & can still happily go back to it.
Tindersticks - Curtains
Regarded as a lesser album than their first 2 , it's always been my favourite of theirs & would probably be close to my all time top 10.
Neil Young - Mirror Ball
Just heard this yeaterday for the 1st time in years & the opening 4 songs are unbelievable. It does tail off, but definitely underappreciated.
Teenage Fanclub - Songs From Northern Britain
They didn't invent the wheel but they have some catalogue of great songs.
The Fall - Light User Syndrome
They've so many albums but this was the 1st I heard & I'll never forget being blown away by it.
Trouble Books
are a really good shout, they're damn good and prob not chatted about enough. I reslly like all the albums/EPs I have of theirs. Really nice low key inventive indie music with a real nice heart to it.
Totally agree about how much heart their is in their music
Gathered Tones is the best, listening to it seems to slow the world around you down. I like concatenating fields but haven't quite got the same emotional attachment to it yet.
Their split with Mark McGuire is really good too.
its just really homely
its almost like you're eves dropping on themn pottering around the house and they happen to be singing and accidently making sounds with stuff around them. But its so well done and full of heart and mega sweet and open that it never feels as creepy as that idea should to listen to haha.
I've got... The United Colors Of Trouble Books, Gathered Tones and Trouble Books & Mark McGuire, Endless Pool. I don't think I've heard Concatenating Fields.
I love everything about Trouble Books so much
but I just can't stand the vocals. It sucks because without the vocals/if the vocals were different I could see them being my favourite band.
Big Shame
I remember not liking them at first, I had expected something with much more melodic, but now I love how plain spoken they are. As jimi alluded to, it makes it all seem so homespun and unassuming.
Melody*
Yeah
I could see that. I find that vocals are a very personal thing. Its why I struggle so much nowadays with so much indie. like 90% of the time they don't click for whatever reason. The words don't mean anything to me which is prob the least of the poroblems really cos if they sound good then its all good on teh whole but... If the sound doesn't fit the backing music, the accent, the emotion just doesn't feel right, phrasing, some kinda untangible and a lot of the time vocals are just there because thats what bands do rather than adding anything. I dunno its a tuff thing to get right for me so yeah I can see it being like that for pretty much any vocal music with anyone tbh.
Also
its a good job then that Trouble Books don't have any religion-themed songs...
abandoned monorail station is one of the best songs ever
srsly
also it took me like half an hour to find it, but this is such a good song
off one of their EPs
https://soundcloud.com/miemusic/hedgehog
just on a trouble books trip now. Need sleep.
I'm with you on this
Still amazed at the lack of love for last years Concatenating Fields. Also Keith Freund's solo album Constant Comments is worth a listen. Its on the spotify
thanks guys!
it's really sweet and energizing to hear such nice things! as of right now, my favorite albums of ours are "Concatenating Fields" and the "Endless Pool" EP.
We understand that the vocals can be a sticking point. They're the hardest thing for us to do too (in fact, we have a new album mostly finished except for the singing on two songs, haha), but we think it makes our project more unique and gives it more depth than just doing instrumentals.
OK, take care!
oh yeah
no there's never gonna be a track about religion
Yeah please don't ditch the vocals
Even if they split opinion a little, I think they add a whole extra dimension to the songs.
I feel like a real douche now!
my new personal goal is to prove myself wrong and fall deeply in love with Trouble Books like everyone above.
like Keith says, Thanks guys!
I couldn't have spread the word of Trouble Books without anyone on DIS taking an interest in the first place.
For those who don't know Trouble Books and want to hear more you can on my soundcloud pages!

Pivot - O Soundtrack My Heart
Kiss Each Other Clean is a great call
beautiful work from Samuel Beam.
Jake Thackray- Jake In A Box (yeah it's a best of, so what? He was a genius)
Elle Milano- Acres of Dead Space Cadets (British indie's great lost hopes, rest in peace EM)
David Thomas Broughton- The Complete Guide to Insufficiency (not as overlooked as some, but should be much bigger than he is)
Bussetti- Debussetti (Massive Attack but not shit)

Doyle and the Fourfathers- Man Made

son lux - at war with walls and mazes

The Aloof - This Constant Chase for Thrills

8/9 five star tracks
needs to be heard!
for the uninitiated:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFFocv8IaDg
Tuuuuuuuuune
The singer has one hell of a voice on him too.
its like Sam Cooke being backed by the Sonics...
...or something similar...
Tamaryn - The Waves
We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves - John Maus
Matthew Dear - Black City
Yes re: Tamaryn (awesome record)
only got Beams by Matthew Dear (which is in my top 5 of last year), I take it I should go to Black City next?
Absolutely, Black City is brilliant
Slowdance is my favorite song of '10.
the second and third ones are ace
good work, A-money.
uh
of Montreal - Paralytic Stalks
Delicate Steve - both albums
Lambchop - Oh Ohio
Van Dyke Parks - Jump!
The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?
tell me about Delicate Steve
also I have 'Song Cycle' and it is well all-time - how about 'Jump!'?
Delicate Steve is great,
put out on David Byrne's label, mates with Dirty Projectors and Fang Island, influenced by African highlife, very sunny and always upbeat.
Jump is kind of operatic. Heavily orchestral pop songs, based on a book VDP wrote (or something...)
Henny Moan - The Coming Thaw
Its free as well: http://www.rpblcofmanyvoices.com/2012/01/henny-moan-coming-thaw-cdr.html
Its all odd and lo-fi kind of like Hype Williams but for my money it was better than the Hyperdub Hype Williams album last year.
Matthew wrote about it here look:
'One time member of Hounds of Hate and tangentially linked with Hype Williams, Henny Moan’s output is primarily through his NTS Radio shows. They’re strange séances where it’s hard to know where one track ends and another begins. He builds weird tapestries woven of vocal snippets, dance music and odder affairs. His debut this year has gone pretty much unnoticed which is a travesty.'

Post-hardcore/90's emo
Garrison - Be A Criminal
Hum - Downward Is Heavenward
Grade - Under The Radar
Red Animal War - The Black Phantom Crusades
Chamberlain - Fate's Got A Driver
On Fire - Galaxie 500 such a good album, when I heard it I couldn't believe it wasn't more famous. Love late 80s alternative rock bands.
Any Other City - Life Without Buildings, such weird but so good. I think Drowned in Sound love them.
All is Well - Sam Amidon, love this album. Seriously if you like great folk music, you will love this. Great gentle voice, brilliant lovely stuff.
And I cant think of any more.
On Fire
is one of my absolute all time favourites. A genuine classic.
I'm gonna dig back to the 80's....
Cactus World News- Urban Beaches
Lime Spiders- The Cave Comes Alive
:)
5 electronic ones
Advisory Circle - Other Channels
Alpinestars - BASIC
Delorean - Subiza
jj - jjno2
SMD - Delicacies
more people should write about their five
imma do mine in a bit.
it's a pretty useless thing to do unless you describe them in some way
i'd second gathered tones anyway, got maybe 3 or 4 really, really good songs on it, and one of my favourites
this is the second album by adebisi shank, by... yeah. That's an amazing album that not enough people listen to and i made a thread a while ago http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4361775
Native speaker by braids is also amazing, and they're incredible live too. Really quite intricate sort of indie music. Having said that i just went to link to Lemonade on youtube and it has 350,000 views. Dunno what that's about, never really heard anyone talk about them.
Uh.. any album by max richter. He's great and i dunno how many people listen to him but i bet it's loads less than a load of drone artists who try to do the same sort of thing as him but are nowhere near as good but people listen to them instead of max richter cos neo-classical isn't a very cool genre really is it. But yeah like this is a great song, really good headphone music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FN3fx8OTJI0
and, uh... kid a by radiohead
which drone artists, s_h?
I'm a fan, anyway. you should check out Jóhann Jóhannsson if you haven't already - 'Viroulegu Forsetar' and 'The Miner's Hymns' especially.
dunno, the stars of the lid sort of thing i guess
i like SOTL though. tim hecker tries to create some moods that are quite similar to the stuff max richter does, but they hold your attention loads less.
Nah
I'm a fan of both Hecker and Richter but I thinks its really reductive to say Hecker's stuff is just a pale comparison.
Braids got talked about a little when it was released
Not denouncing your suggestion but it had a little hype. Looking forward to whatever they do next.
in no particular order
Lilys - The Three Way
Sloan - One Chord To Another
Quicksilver Messenger Service - s/t
Cotton Mather - Kon Tiki
Contortions - Buy
james chance / contortions are amazing
not all of these are all time favourites just good records i'm surprised didn't get more attention
talons' rustic bullshit, actually is an all time favourite and obviously well known on this board but very little beyond
silver pines - forces, the woman from sleepover's previous and much better project, has a kind of hazy beach house sound with more old timey sounding vocals and occassionaly slabs of psych guitar noise
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGwIVMF6264
ghost bees - tasseomancy, sounds like creepy twin joanna newsom's
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-6Lah1pYAc
twinsistermoon - when stars glide through solid, just really pretty folk with ambient sounds always in the background
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7qrn2ejSoE
kickball -everything is a miracle nothing is a miracle, another one that got a fair bit of dis love back in the day but not widely known beyond at all
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8nEUfcOdeE
X-Ray Spex - Germ Free Adolescents - I know this is fairly well known, but I think it's pretty much the best record to come out of the late seventies after Marquee Moon. Just amazing.
Pure X - Pleasure
Macintosh Plus - Floral Shoppe
Guided By Voices - Same Place the Fly Got Smashed
Karen Dalton - In My Own Time
My top 5
Look Blue Go Purple Compilation
A compilation of singles released by this wonderful indie pop band. One of my favourites on the flying nun roster.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlfGbYfaXJI
Lovesliescrushing - Glissceule
Could have gone for a few other albums but I think this is my favourite. Cortez fuses shoegaze with ambient and drone which is layered with wonderfully ethereal vocals. Extremely pastoral and beautiful music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-6dQFFkC6k
Hash Jar Tempo - Well Oiled
A collaboration between NZ guitarist and Bardo Pond recorded at Bardo's commune in the late 90's while Roy was traveling the world.
A fusion of Bardo Pond's heavy psych with Roy's guitar soundscapes. One of my favorite collaborative albums.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRMc0UJK0DQ
Red Krayola - The Parable of Arable Land
One of the most forward thinking guitar albums ever. Precedes the development of post-punk, no wave, etc despite being critically panned at the time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D142KYxc6_0
Pocahaunted - Island Diamonds
It was a real shame these guys broke up, one of my favourite bands of the 00's. Trippy as hell with hypnotic dub grooves.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SFNoi_ox4g
Following incandenza_'s post
I shall write a bit more. However enough has been said (arguably) about Trouble Books, there are several Iron & Wine fans on here, anyone who likes pretty drones likes Hammock and if you don't know arrange then go here:
So that leaves Korallreven. Basically any fan of Air France (or other Swedish balaeric pop) who haven't heard of these guys needs to check out this album. It works really well as an album too, with the Julianna Barwick-like interludes and repeated melodies throughout the album. No word on if they'll do anything else, but for me this is the pinnacle of the Gothenburg scene.
And sort of an honourable mention to Konkylie by When Saints Go Machine, but that is well liked on here. One of the best pop albums of the last 10 years.
Oops, link (for arrange) :
http://arrange.bandcamp.com/album/plantation
Paperfilm - You Should Call It
one of my favorite ambient albums in the ambient genre and an incredible achievement consider that the guy was in his mid teens when he made it.
Shora - Malval
dazzling instrumental rock in similar vein to Grails but substituting middle eastern influence for classic minimalism.
Ala Muerte - Saint Elena
Sinister ambient-folk(ish) along similar lines to Grouper, The Battle Of Land and Sea etc.
Geisha - Mondo Dell'Orrore
A truly incredible noise-rock record, manages to be both devastating and euphoric across it's duration.
Rose Kemp - Golden Shroud/Unholy Majesty
Both truly incredible albums spanning folk/doom and sludge plus her vocals are amongst the best I've heard in any genre.
