Drake
Massively late to the party, I've liked a couple of songs for ages but only recently has pretty much the whole of Take Care hit me. I've been obsessed for the past couple of weeks.
General vibe I'm getting is that it's lame as fuck to like Drake.
Do DiS like a bit of Drizzy or not?

Yes, though mainly the singles. Haven't listened to all of Take Care.
But it's looking like his latest won't be a letdown.

he's got some really good songs
both albums are pretty heavy on filler though
He's about as credible as artists of that genre can be.
But obviously, the amount of great records that have come from said genre you could count on two hands.
meh/10
Take Care is a brilliant album
And Underground Kings is a brilliant tune
definitely
and Lord Knows is a cracker too.
Very true.
Fuck what other people think. Take Care is an amazing album and I totally disagree that it's burdened by a bunch of filler; for me, this is one of those rare albums whose length really works in its favour. HYFR is just fucking sweet.
Bit depressing
Good guitarist though. He shouldn't have killed himself.
He's alright
A major goof ball and its a bit like watching your dad play at being a mega rap star but his albums are genraly listenable even if he does seem to rip off anyone thats cool in his flow every other time. The instros are usualy pretty wicked. He can be tuff to listen to at times, his flow just jars at points. But I think he does what Kanye is trying to do at times better than Kanye. He'll prob rip off Kendric Lamar next or something.
He's a LOT better than Kendrick Lamar.
Lamar's a weak rapper.
Yeah but he's way more trendy and is ridding more of a hype wave
Drake likes a bit of that action, he went for Lil Wayne back in the day, Kanye, Weekend last time. Prob gonna be Kendric and maybe Future this time around. His like some kind of hype sypher.
idk.
Lamar's had one critically-acclaimed album. I wouldn't say he's more popular with critics or more respected amongst his peers than Drake, though. Drake's pretty much still top dog of Europa League-level rappers.
He's bigger by far
and good at what he does he just likes to take these ideas from slightly more underground people a lot of the time and put it into his big budget stuff. He feeds of that underground coolness big time. But yeah he makes it work and hes defo Europa League level, semis or quarter final a lot of the time, I dunno is he raps version of Roma or something? IDK I've not played FIFA in years.
:D
It's kinda cute when you try so hard.
Genuinely don't know why you retards get so defensive or dismissive when someone has a different opinion.
Lamar's album last year was good, undoubtedly, but he's not a standout rapper. Just isn't. Good, polished, inventive tracks, but he's a weak rapper. If someone's not allowed to say that without you acting like a child, then you should probably stop basing your personality on your hobbies so much.
I don't think Kendric is any better or worse than Drake as a rapper
they're both kinda on a par, both make good stuff but don't really stand out that far.
Drake is a better singer than rapper.
He is
hes alright at that sing rap thing. But yeah I still see them two as both on a par as rappers. Enjoyable but without much pure personality, energy or uniqueness to push them over into like Kanye range who at least has loads of personality even if I don't really enjoy much of him. Or like Lil Wayne in his prime. Or Gunplay or King Louie now. Or even Young Scooter and Future now who al lshine with a energy, personality and a unique vibe. Kendric sounds like a throwback compared to them a good one, pretty enjoyable one but still not a massivly exciting one just like Drake.
KL is one of the most versatile rappers to emerge from
the last 5 years or so. He can do it all. i def wouldn't class him as throwback.
I'd put Gunplay on par with him from that list.
Not a standout for me.
Style over substance.
Dismissive, defensive, superior retort, please...
Not being defensive, but what 'substance' are you talking about, though?
Style over substance would be exactly the words I would use to describe Drake, no joke. Examples?
strike the 'though' in there
He's versitile and competent
but he doesn't have that spark for me.
People are just desperate for great, fresh, respectable hip-hop that isn't really there.
It's like A$AP Rocky. I liked the mixtape, like the guy, he's got natural suave, interviews well, but when it comes to the crunch, his material nowhere near lives up to the hype. I think i'd go as far as to say that bar '1 Train', which i'd consider one of the better tracks of the year, even recent years, his album was complete and utter piss.
Asap is horrible, no doubt.
Just jacks everyone elses styles and somehow makes them worse. Cant stand the guy.
Do you like proper music as well?
Or just hip-hop and rap?
Sure you're a good egg, but i just find it funny how various middle-aged, middle-class whiteboys have become the self-appointed go-to guy for said genres on here over the years.
Sure I do.
Rap is maybe around 50% of my music collection. Maybe less, idk. I make loads of threads about other stuff and talk about it all the time.
Why is it funny, and what does being white, middle-class and 30 have to do with anything? I never appointed myself the rap guy. No different than you being the soccer guy or whatever. Fair play, I'd probably weigh your opinion a little heavier if I ever cared enough to get into it. I dont know you and would never make assumptions about your irl personality based on your online persona.
have to do with *any of this*?
--great, fresh, respectable hip-hop that isn't really there--
It's out there, but you probably don't have the time or want to care. Fair enough.
ASAP is like an underground Drake
its really style over substance and mostly copped from everyone else, like Main Attrakionz or well loads of people. Kendric doesn't quite do that but he doesn't quite shine either. He's just sorta there and doesn't quite have the ideas of his own developed fully yet. He's just competent, vaugly enjoyable, easy to listen to and easy to market outside of hip-hop, genrealy has a nice laid back aint gonna piss anyone off vibe about him. Good qualities I guess.
there is tons
gucci's back on fire
rick ross has two stunning mixtapes last year
waka flocka
bun b had some hot tapes recently
chief keef
jeezys making a wee comeback
yo gotti one of the best run of mixtapes period
buddens mixtapes
i could go on.
He and Gunplay sound so good together
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLlE3UkprIM
They should do a project with each other.
Yeah that'd be wicked
Kendric is good but yeah he needs a push of some sorts it feels a little sterile at times. He does sound like he has it in him to become more though, he needs to bring out the rawness a bit. He's better when he goes into odd garbled alien mode like on Cartoon and cerial yeah.
Did you hear Backseat Freestyle?
I did
it was even on comercial radio in my tiny local shop one day. I liked the beat and its fun like Mercy but doesn't feel like the real deal. Its playing at being ruff rather than being ruff. You know you don't beleave it, sounds fun though and it has some wicked humor to it. Like you beleave Gunplay even if you didn't know he pulls guns out on people haha.
Backsteat
the best thing about it is the beat and the humor. But it was like a halfway house between Mercy being kinda fun and a little raw and the full on cartoon madness, violence and humor of Gunplay. Was Backsteat a satire or kinda poke at rawer stuff? Cos I dunno if anyone does that better than Gunplay with his over the top style but he does it while sound like he really means it and plays it up even more kinda like the diffrence between the Undertaker and Gilberg.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OknYjUQc0ww
Its all part of the overarching story in the album.
Mean to be satyrical I think.
Oh I see, you were being serious?
And now you're trying even harder? lol
If you are being serious, then you obv have no clue what you are talking about, cheers. Thinking that Drake is a better rapper than Kendrick is maybe the worst opinion in the history of music. Renders your opinion on music redundant.
You're being a stupid cunt here.
Cheers.
Genuinely don't know why you retards get so defensive or dismissive when someone has a different opinion.
'Ship, don't feed the troll
He has zero interest in engaging properly in this debate. He knows that Drake's not a true rapper like Kendrick, he knows that he should couch the argument in terms of who's the better artist rather than rapper if he wants to make a fair comparison, but he's not going to do it because he's a gigantic troll.
You're being really, really needy here.
I've twice addressed why i don't rate Lamar that highly as a rapper. You're just being ridicuously defensive. This is why more people don't get involved in the hip-hop threads, because they're patrolled by a bunch of cliquey, white, middle-class bores who think their opinions matter more than other peoples. I'll leave you to it.
Thanks; please do.
it's a white energy thing, mate
you wouldn't understand
I can never tell when he actually wants to engage in normal discussion
or if he's just blasting off in shots-fired mode.
i think i like drake more when he's making preposterous claims
and i don't mean all that godfather of rap stuff, but when he starts rapping about catching bodies and popping niggas i can't help but laugh.
he's one of those people i just can't get into because of his voice
it irks me, sounds like he always has a croak in his throat or something
1. Arrange photos of all current reasonably successful hip-hop/R&B artists on wall
2. Blindfold self
2. Throw a dart at wall
3. Appoint whoever's photo dart hits as hip-hop artist it's OK for indie spods to like
4. Repeat in 6 months' time
I mean, for all of Drake's talents, it's not exactly like hearing Straight Outta Compton, It Takes A Nation or even the Slim Shady LP for the first time, is it. There must be more vital hip-hop out there than this. Point me in the right direction, folks.
was Eminem ever a credible artist?
if your answer to this is yes, you probably don't really like music.
I think he stood apart from most other hip-hop artists of the time, more than Drake does in the current scene
Granted, his music's gone to shit now but I think he was a real shot in the arm for rap, and he managed to be massively successful with it. And all without resorting to mind-numbing braggadocio.
Eminem just resorted to mind-numbing aggression instead
Much less 'gangsta' posturing than cartoon violence, surely.
It's fucking boring either way
i love my life to be filled with vital, important things
Well, there's more good stuff out there than I'll ever have time to consume
Life is finite, so why fill it with dreck?
loads of it
this is one of the strongest times in rap for years.start looking into the southern mixtape scene.its not the kinda stuff dis cover but if you speak to most pure rap fans who aint backpackers they'll all agree.there are countless classics came out this last decade.
and their all free on datpif :)
Jesus fucking Christ, I hope you're satisfied with yourself Aaron... :-)
The other Drake thread had some good times as well:
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4294993
Although reading it now doesnt make much sense since all the Kennydope/brightonb posts were removed. Funny thing was, Take Care ended up being his favorite album of the year! lol that guy.

Like, go download that already.
this is a rap thread in general now.

Kevin Gates tape is easily my favourite of the year
Been some decent releases this year, but that's the only one that's really stuck with me. I think there's loads of really exciting stuff to come in 2013 though, and a lot of these mixtapes have good ideas that I'm looking forward to seeing be developed.
Its ace
I lean more towards King Louie, Young Scooter, Future for my fix mind. It just seems a little more fun. Kevin is pretty undeniable though easy up there. I have no idea whats coming up this year, I only ever get mixtapes really and just play catch up when I can cos there are so many instead of looking forward to much.
I like the Kevin Gates tape so much because it's kind of in the middle
Like Future mixed with Freddie Gibbs.
yeah thats it
he's on the verge of being like proper old people hip-hop with words and that in it that mean something. Or at least appearing that way. Its more mature but with a real cool sound to it unlike Gibbs or whatever.
I like some Drake, but I don't admit it
I fucking love Drake.
http://i.minus.com/ib2xh1tJ7o49Hr.gif = me at Drake concert.
