Otis Redding - Love Man (I love love love his voice and when he does his looooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooove
and neeeeee-eee-eee-eee-eee-eeed with it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8Ga3Ub4UTM)
Bark Psychosis - Hex
Carly Rae Jepsen - the whole album is awesome fuiud
Morphine - I think they're my favorite 90s band
Naughty By Nature - first four albums are classic, very underrated group, could balance a ton of styles, Treach is a great emcee
The Sea and Cake - all their 90s stuff satisfies my indie itch. good musicians
Don Ellis - crazy time signatures off the wall big band jazz stuff
Can - the Lost Tapes just started diving into these on my commutes to work
Devin Townsend - Spent about 3 hours watching live videos on youtube the other night, dude is ridiculously entertaining
Mala In Cuba - Just to make Jimi happy
Lots of Isley Brothers, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Roisin Murphy, Janet Jackson
It aint as good as his singles tho or his first album that he didn't want to call an album Return II Space. Mala's a boss whatever way you look at it mind.
especially the post Fahey stuff
(also really looking forward to your 2012 mix)
some good stuff up there. I've never actually heard any Morphine. would probably dig them though. probably will check out some Naughty by Nature stuff too (not a fan of their name though)
the Can Tapes are pretty great. I'm sure they must still have other stuff lying around they can release
I guess it is rock but I don't lump it in with all of the bands mentioned in that thread in my head. It's like minimal drone almost with the violins and stuff going all the time
probably some indian music as well given the titles
I guess when they became International Harvester, Harvester and Trad, Gras och Stenar, they became more 'normal' rock, though still with some lengthy repetitive songs and some droney stuff
Why do you regularly post on the DiS board?
Social or Music and why?
What are your top three go-to sources for new stuff?
Which three users do you hold the musical opinions of in the highest regard?
What's your longest consecutive run of thumb war victories?
1. Cos I like music and dont have too many people to talk music with extensively irl. And it can be fun.
2. Music about 96% of the time. Dont care to talk about soccer.
3. I have a really big google reader list of blogs I check. At the moment its Thizzler on the Roof, Fader, Spin and livemixtapes that I check the most
4. Tough to narrow it, different users for different things but really I like anyone who explains why they like what they like, even if they're taste doesn't align with mine.
5. Havent ever lost to my wife cos she cheats every time, so thats like probably 25 in a row.
Most of the NBA guys just say they like Wayne and Jay and Ye and call it a day. Fair enough but snooooore.
This is the best thing ever though: DJ Quik beat and cameo with 4 of the more shy NBA players doing raps over it about some new Nikes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS0qGi_Spqc
tbh I'm not a big fan of the series. I think between the four you could really make a quality 45-60 minute mix of the best stuff and that would suffice. The idea was there but sometimes it just doesnt work. I think the format showcases Guru's flaws too often.
essential reading. Anyway, what i'd like to know is, as an American, have you ever danced to country and western (maybe a dosey doe) and enjoyed it, and if so, which track's your favourite? (I like all my exes live in texas from the movie motion picture, Roadhouse)
its usually the worst thing in the world but once in a while it hits the spot.
Big and Rich 'SAve a horse ride a cowboy' is too ridiculous to hate. Also 'She Thinks My Tractors Sexy'.
Truth be told though, Garth Brooks 'Fences' was one of the first tapes I ever bought, went halves with my older sister. Cant even begin to front on 'Friends in Low Places'.
in terms of opening up new rabbit-holes that you hadn't previously explored/or putting you on the road to where you are now as a music listener/appreciator
---And then on the other side, the poetry side, I look at people like Billy Corgan and that white energy is powerful too, I feel a lot from the white energy on a certain level – but that is a white energy and it’s different---
Mainly cos the format is stale af. I really like The Voice, though. The format is new, the judges mesh well and for the first half of the season is all about the voices and nothing else.
but who wants to atone and is interested in expanding his horizons, what are the five records I should listen to so I can banish those prejudices for good? Aquemini for the experimentation in production, the memorable hooks and having the best song ever recorded, SpottieOttieDopaliscious
Snoop cos its hella fun. One of the best voices and personalities in rap.
UGK cos you need a deep south funk filled slapper of a record. Outkast are from the south but they didnt play to their roots much the further along in their careers they went.
Have wanted to give 36 Chambers a blast for a while. Not sure about Snoop, not sure I get off so much on 'funky' stuff but should give it a chance. Been meaning to give Illmatic a spin too after seeing threads calling it the best hip hop album ever. Plenty to get stuck into!
get up? or get down?
Up, always up.
But really, you've got to get down. Punks jump up to get beat down, after all.
So... in conclusion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIupvCZJaoo
What's your favorite ever
non hip-hop album?
D'angelo - Voodoo
and then Superunknown if you want rock.
Tupac or Biggie?
Today? Pac
Changes every month or so. I love both tho.
theShipment name is related to a song?
It has reference to my government name
and to a song by The Coup.
'The shipment is delivered come and get it if you bout it'
OutKast or Run D.M.C.?
Kast >>>>>>>>
I like some DMC singles but I think they are kinda overrated overall, sounds pretty juvenile now
What's the one song?
Big yourself up, shot of confidence, mentally prepare for a major life event. Psychological boost if you like.
I have a pretty extensive playlist of songs for this.
But I guess if I had to pick just one it would be...
Shook Ones Pt. II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP0wsET8__Y
Playlist available?
Would love to hear it.
Which one do you prefer...
Oasis or Blur?
neither?
Not familiar with either really outside of a few of the singles.
give Blur's post-Britpop albums a go
'Think Tank' especially.
what's the one song with the best
kick drum?
Led Zep - When The Levee Breaks
gotta be the correct answer right?
duno
was thinking 'da funk', or fleetwood mac's 'world turning' myself.
Your answer will suffice though.
album/mixtape/compilation(just any piece of music really) more people must be made more aware of?
RHYTHM-AL-ISM
duh
What colour is dubstep?
crystal blue like water cos
where's the drop?
Temptations or Isleys?
Isley Bros for me
although Temptations psych phase was awesome.
If you had to do a James-Murphy-Losing-My-Edge-esque list of all the esoteric artists you listen to, who would be in your list?
Oh man, tough one.
Would probably just be a list of underground/forgotten/underrated rap artists.
what albums/songs/whatever else
have you been enjoying lately?
new or old it doesn't matter
Been all over the place recently
outside of the usual slathering of rap/r&b.
Ive been into:
Peter Gabriels first four solo albums
Then Ive been kinda diving into some acoustic-post-fahey-folk type of stuff which can all be found in this playlist I made: http://open.spotify.com/user/theshipment/playlist/2WNjL5jGiUHaSu5CFkN9Xg really liking john renbourn atm
And then connecting with my emo-punk-pop roots with this playlist:
http://open.spotify.com/user/theshipment/playlist/1lMZYcnV14rh6uuHELXUxr
really liking that Funeral For a Friend record
And metal from last year
http://open.spotify.com/user/theshipment/playlist/6bvNdNXVQgr9uBwPVnumaF
I've also been slowly chipping away at my 2012 hip-hop playlists so I can share those here soon within the next few weeks. So much good stuff.
Don Ellis
Any recommendation on a particular Don Ellis album?
Check the live stuff like Live at Monterey
but the studio album to get is Turkish Bath, its totally mad. And Tears of Joy is great too, just a little more conventional (for his standards).
Thanks, I'll have a listen

Cheers
Haha :)
It aint as good as his singles tho or his first album that he didn't want to call an album Return II Space. Mala's a boss whatever way you look at it mind.
I'll listen to those playlists later
especially the post Fahey stuff
(also really looking forward to your 2012 mix)
some good stuff up there. I've never actually heard any Morphine. would probably dig them though. probably will check out some Naughty by Nature stuff too (not a fan of their name though)
the Can Tapes are pretty great. I'm sure they must still have other stuff lying around they can release
Ah dude, you need Morphine.
I think they would be one of your favorites ever within just a few minutes of listening!
sub-question
best Morphine album?
I'm leaning towards 'Good'...
Why
are you such a sad cunt?
Mainly cos I have to pay child support for your dumb ass.
What were the first hip-hop albums you loved?
36 Chambers
or Doggystyle. But ATLiens was when I really went in.
Favourite white energy artist?
Billy Corgan
if you had to have a lyric
tattooed on your face, what would it be?
Ha! Uh
'Big fish in a small pond'
Off of bow down. Idk that's off the top
Could you choose the best lyrical putdown you know
and fire it Ponyoakwards, plz
Also, why the fuck do you post to open-minded hip-hop stronghold DiS, not that I'm complaining <3
I dunno sometimes.
Like one of those relationships you always fall back on cos it's comfortable or whatever. I like a lot of peeps on here tbf. Good bunch o lads.
I guess that's why I still post here tbf (don't forget the lasses mind)
kind of a shit question, will think of a better one...now!
you linked me to some don ellis recently. what other insane kinda old-school heavy shit from the jazz/psych/whatever environs you got in the locker?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_z_Irh5AFU
i started this thread a while back cos I wanted more 70s psych/rock
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4335448
nobody even mentioned Parson Sound in that thread
what a travesty
they are big on lengthy repetitive psyche jams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qPHqGydVVQ
yes!
I guess it is rock but I don't lump it in with all of the bands mentioned in that thread in my head. It's like minimal drone almost with the violins and stuff going all the time
there's definitely an influence of minimalism and drone in there
probably some indian music as well given the titles
I guess when they became International Harvester, Harvester and Trad, Gras och Stenar, they became more 'normal' rock, though still with some lengthy repetitive songs and some droney stuff
anyway it's great whatever you call it
still going strong pretty much to this day!
tho one of them died recentlyish
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp6ldaGVjEY
Nice!
I'll give these guys a dive for sure.
Here's a few
Why do you regularly post on the DiS board?
Social or Music and why?
What are your top three go-to sources for new stuff?
Which three users do you hold the musical opinions of in the highest regard?
What's your longest consecutive run of thumb war victories?

Favourite of the decent Boot Camp albums?
Enta Da Stage, Dah Shinin', Nocturnal, or Da Storm?
Nocturnal for me.
All of those are great though.
Did not expect that answer,
But < https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3ixy6cKOgE > anyway.
Thanks!
I like Dah Shinin next and then Enta after. Its a pretty close race really but I just have a thing for Rucks voice. Nocturnal is front to back heat.
Are you taking the piss with the Billy Corgan answer?
Because if not then you & your whole thread is bullshit & I've wasted my time.
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4426565
What was the last gig you went to and what's the next one you are going to?
This is kinda sad but I didnt go to a single gig in 2012!
I think the last one I went to was Jimmy Eat World and the next one I plan on going to is Dino Jr in a few weeks.
haha. baron.
how on earth did you manage not to go to a single gig!
old and dont really care as much anymore
and kids and job and other interests taking precedence
ah fair enough.
wasn't sure if you were a young whippersnapper any more or not
It's bigger than hip hop.
What is 'it'?
The only possible thing they could be referring
to there is the bassline on that song. Its bigger than anything and everything tbf.
What's your most hated song?
At the mo
its Rihanna Diamonds.
But all time its probably Soft Cell 'Tainted Love'
Brave choice on the second one.
But.. no offence.. but.... why??
No offense taken.
I particularly hate:
his voice
the main synth stab
the boring bass sound
the melody on the hook
all of it!
Fair do's.
To be fair, nearly all the "classic" canon of early 80s electro-pop is Marmite love/hate stuff.
Which NFL/NBA/NHL star has the best music taste, that you know of?
Which of them has the best musical side project?
Taste... not really sure
Most of the NBA guys just say they like Wayne and Jay and Ye and call it a day. Fair enough but snooooore.
This is the best thing ever though: DJ Quik beat and cameo with 4 of the more shy NBA players doing raps over it about some new Nikes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS0qGi_Spqc
taste: russel westbrook
COME ON
What is he into?
dude is always goofily singing along to pop songs
OH YAH! ha
his fashion though, uh, just no, dude, no.
Which is the best of Guru's Jazzmatazz series?
(This argument has nearly led to blows between my mate and I lol, I will bow to your superior wisdom)
Not my thread, but it's the first one.
Donald Byrd and Roy Ayers <3
Yeah def the first one but
tbh I'm not a big fan of the series. I think between the four you could really make a quality 45-60 minute mix of the best stuff and that would suffice. The idea was there but sometimes it just doesnt work. I think the format showcases Guru's flaws too often.
Hi theShipment, long time fan, first time caller. Was a huge fan of your 100 best 90s hip hop tracks
essential reading. Anyway, what i'd like to know is, as an American, have you ever danced to country and western (maybe a dosey doe) and enjoyed it, and if so, which track's your favourite? (I like all my exes live in texas from the movie motion picture, Roadhouse)
That Top 100 thread sounds great
could someone link to it? cheers
here it is
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4270524
Shame it's is basically in ruins now.
That is my all-time favourite DiS thread. So many tracks I'd never heard which I now listen to almost daily.
Been working on a 2000's one,
should be ready to unleash by mid year.
Pop country CAN be kinda fun
its usually the worst thing in the world but once in a while it hits the spot.
Line dancing is really fun fwiw.
Do you go hard in the muthafuckin' paint?
Well technically, no.
In basketball I'm more of a finesse player and jump shooter.
But I do bring the muthafuckin' ruckus with some impressive trash talk no doubt.
so you're like
if steve nash told people their wives taste of cheerios
exactly like that
What's your favourite
And LEAST favourite Steely Dan albums?
Fav: Aja or Countdown
Least: tie between the last two
most influential (on you) track you've heard
in terms of opening up new rabbit-holes that you hadn't previously explored/or putting you on the road to where you are now as a music listener/appreciator
Tough one,
there's been a few through the years I suppose.
Green Day 'Longview'
Bob Marley 'No Woman No Cry'
Wu Tang 'Cream'
Outkast 'ATLiens'
top 5 disco
sorry that was very blunt
HELLO! Will have to get back in the plug.dj thing soon eh!
For sure.
I just got Steve Arringtons 'Dancin in the Key Of Life' I bet youd like that.
have you seen your mother, baby, standing in the shadows?
/who're your favourite artists from the world cup winning countries?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f7/World_cup_winners.png
OS Mutantes.
What did you answer to me mean?
Do you actually think I'm gonna click on some link you give me? Just answer me, lady to lady.
The answer is in that link, it's very simple and quick to click it.
In the amount of time it took you to write another response you could have already had the answer.
So now what I'll do is link you to the interview so you can be one click closer to your answer:
http://www.factmag.com/2013/03/04/vandross-prince-dangelo-theyre-saints-to-us-inc-talk-debut-album-no-world-and-stripping-the-blackness-out-of-rb/
AND I'll even c/p my first post in that thread!
---And then on the other side, the poetry side, I look at people like Billy Corgan and that white energy is powerful too, I feel a lot from the white energy on a certain level – but that is a white energy and it’s different---
hello theshipment.
from people who have been rapping for at least 5 years professionally, who do you think has been the most consistently boring?
Big Sean
or Common (even though he has classic material)
Which Edan / El-P tracks
Should I play at our next club night?
For people to dance to or just vibe to?
Preferably dance to. Failing that nod along approvingly with.
Wouldn't play either of those to dance to personally
but probably Get Wise 91 by Mr Lif which features Edan. Bass line has enough groove to it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDw9qPIAwkk
El-P - Meanstreak
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VSPQrpTRSQ
Mic Manipulator clearly
Just play Echo Party
saves you having to DJ for 40 odd minutes
If you had to form a ska punk band, what would you be called and why?
Heat Shaft
Cos it sounds good like.
What records do you ll
Awesome
Ahem. What records do you listen to with your kids?
obviously:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Kf4kyQabwQ
Mostly just fun playlists I've made.
If I am gonna put on a full record then its like Thriller or Off The Wall.
What's your favourite Can album?
Thanks for the 2011 Hip Hop playlists by the way - tons of shit I'd not heard, but all good.
Ege Bamyasi
But havent heard them all yet. Future Days, Tago Mago and the lost tapes are the others i have.
All about the drummer for me.
The drummer is blinding.
The guitar is in close second. Future Days for me. Cheers.
What are your thoughts on cLOUDDEAD ?
Dont like the one guys voice at all.
Not a fan.
what are your top 5 Mac Dre tracks?
Since '84
She Neva Seen
Not My Job
Off Tha Rictor
Too Hard
Somethin like that I think.
Liquid Swords or Cuban Linx ?
Cuban Linx.
mafioso rap >
What are your most favorite Electric Six songs?
confession time...
I have only heard a few ES songs!
Give me a few to check and I'll listen straight away.
Here's the YT playlist I made for a thread a while back
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3c4Q11jB9I&list=PL4FDD6D901F27A18F
I'm a graphic designer!
Nobody does it finer!
lol this backstreats backs alright song is crackin me up.
gud guitar tones throughout all this stuff.
Who are your favourite and least favourite artists from your home state?
Nearly impossible, California has birthed so much good stuff!
Favorite: DJ Quik, Snoop, E-40, Minutemen, Spice-1, Beach Boys, Tower Of Power, Janes Addiction, Ice Cube, QOTSA, 2pac. Too $hort, Mac Dre,
Least: Slightly Stoopid, Hoobastank, Korn (I like that one song though)
Nice.
Never heard of Slightly Stoopid. I guess they are California's Son of Dork, who in turn are punk-pop's Goatse.
They took the worst things about Sublime
and made them worse.
Favourite Beatles album?
Revolver.
Still have some of their catalog to get through but Ive heard the big ones.
I won't mention this again as it might get me banned, but...
What is the best image to think about to get rid of the image of an overweight, stubbly transvestite dressed as Audrey Horne from Twin Peaks?
what is your favourite scale?
Fishscale
What's your favourite piece of music played on a brass instrument?
OKAY... I'M RELOADED
MY BANK ROLL SWOLL AND I JUST CANT FOLD IT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwG6vD2vP8A
do you like this song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoNFWcLXkiw
Pretty cool, first couple minutes was kinda monotonous
but then it got good.
what do you think of American Idol/other music-based reality shows?
Dont like Idol at all.
Mainly cos the format is stale af. I really like The Voice, though. The format is new, the judges mesh well and for the first half of the season is all about the voices and nothing else.
what do you think of this song?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvdRm0_og5Q
That's not very nice.
:(
it wasn't a message to you, i was just jaggin'
Well in that case...
it's really fun! Good work.
ta :)
As someone who culturally grew up listening to lame indie music and was ideologically against 'that rap and hip-hop stuff',
but who wants to atone and is interested in expanding his horizons, what are the five records I should listen to so I can banish those prejudices for good? The only hip-hop album I currently own is It Takes a Nation of Millions, which I don't listen to very often to be honest. But I like 99 Problems and Yonkers.
Oooooh tough,
I've only got five albums to hook you. This is hard.
* Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
* Outkast - Aquemini
* Snoop - Diggystyle
* UGK – Ridin’ Dirty
* Notorious BIG - Ready To Die
Diggystyle lol
*Doggystyle
36 Chambers cos of the grime mixed with nine hungry/unproven no-name rappers
carving out a place in rap history.
Notorious cos he is the best.
Cheers! Will investigate.
Illmatic is a good jump off too, indeed.
Should also note that these aren't my favorite 5 rap albums, not even necessarily my favorite by these artists.
Def give southern hip-hop a chance.
Do you love The Gourds cover of Gin and Juice as much as I, and apparently Snoop, do?
One of the better corny novelty ironic rap covers I've heard.
damned with faint praise
