Instrumental openers on predominantly vocal albums
A good thing or a lazy way to get around the issue that none of your recordings sits well as an opener?

I suppose The Black Amnesias can play too
there's yr pound of flesh, DiS
hanshotfirst, Antpocalypsenow, plasticniki, Acquiescence, Lambchops, JaguarPirate, sizeofanocean, and Comaboy this'd this -
there's something nice about really minimal ones like A Reflection by The Cure
especially if they prefigure the album
heartworms this'd this -
Pixies - Cecilia Ann (off Bossanova)
One of the most thrilling opening tracks ever.
-
Prologue - The Antlers
Does that count? It should.
-
OH ALSO
Broken Social Scene - Capture The Flag
funkycow this'd this -
Moratoria - Bikini Atoll
That's a good one.
-
HYPERPOWER!
Pinion
-
Followed by Rock Music
One of the most thrilling second tracks ever.
-
Low / Bowie
although Speed Of Life was meant to have vocals and he just didn't get around to it/was too fucked or something.
-
I can think of a few and they're all great
Firesuite by Doves
Intro by the XX
Let Her Rest by Fucked Up
(Druun) by DiivJaguarPirate this'd this -
the two songs are quite similar
wanting to make an impression on their first record, the band employs four minutes of a quiet beginning leading to waves of INCREASING GUITAR NOISE
thing is, Oceansize got there first. and where HOTS' song is tortured and angsty (check that melancholy Spanish folk chord progression), Oceansize's is powered by THE GLORY OF SUNLIGHT
so yeah, I prefer Oceansize's. it's less obviously indie, more psychedelic and organic, even if it is less wrought. I'd also say it's more powerful. you are free to disagree

new Foals album
nice tune too; 'Prelude'.
-
no wait screw that
even 'ah-ah' 'buh-buh' counts as vocals
SORRY IGNORE
-
That's what inspired the OP
Though I wasn't then sure whether the odd 'yelp' constitutes vocals or not. Works well in the context of the album though, which I am enjoying.

Sentimental attachment makes it impossible for me to judge it properly tbh
I went into the new music tent at V Festival in 2004 as a fairly ordinary teenage passive-absorber of music that I encountered and exited utterly exhilarated and wanting to search out anything and everything that could make me feel that exhilarated again.
I really wish I could hear something new now that would make me excited again.
-
Return To Hot Chicken
is terrific.
-
Introducing The Band by Thomas White is a very good (if obscure) one from recent years
that said, the songs that come afterwards kick its ass. but it does a good job clearing the decks for them
-
Off the top of me head...
Doves - Firesuite
Clearlake - Clearlake Lido
Asobi Seksu - Everything Is On (a whole 18 seconds!)
Coldplay - Life In Technicolour
Moby - Hymn
Amplifier - Gustav's Arrival and The Runner
Sun Airway - Activity 1
Janelle Monae - Suite II Overture (sort of)And even though The Black Amnesias kicks the shit out of it, Seconds by HotS also.
-
Mew - Cicuitry of the Wolf
The Radio Dept. - It's Personal
Kubichek! - Searchers -
I came here
to say Firesuite.
Furryboy and sizeofanocean this'd this -
oh the Mew one is very good
kinda wish it went on longer
funkycow this'd this -
Can't believe
No-one has said Dananananaykroyd - Hey Everyone yet!
Come on lads! -
Sentient - Anathema
sprung to my mind.
I think there was a time in the mid 90s when most extreme metal records had some sort of mood-setting prelude to start an album off. Embarrassingly, other than Anathema, I can only think of Humana Inspired To Nightmare from Cradle of Filth's 'Dusk...' but I'm sure there are hundreds.
-
Searchers is inexplicable
There is precisely no reason why it shouldn't just be the intro to Roman Is Better
-
Followed by Velouria
Followed by Allison
Tails off pretty badly after that but great start.
funkycow this'd this -
Tindersticks
Introduction from the Hungry Saw... a real beaut
-
^this
one of my favourite album openers ever.
-
It is far too long
I'm a big fan of Intro's under two minutes though. A good example would be Through Mind and Back from the new Youth Lagoon album.
-
I love instrumental opening tracks!
Intro - Sonic Youth
Intro - Doves
Takk... - Sigur RósI also like instrumental closers too, such as Optigan 1 by Blur.
-
Alpha Waves - My Vitriol
Also deserves a mention!
-
MARJORY RAZORBLADE
IS AS KEEN AND AS SHARP AS CAN BE
WILL ALWAYS SETTLE MY PROBLEMS FOR ME -
High Llamas - Hawaii
starts with one of the best instrumental tracks of all time
-
In that case Intro by XX doesn't count because of all the "aaah aaah aaaaaah"'s
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.
-
Super Furry Animals do a good introduction,
Furryvision is lovely for the minute or so it runs.
lambchop - C'mon, and No You C'mon both have sorta preludey pieces at the start of each disc that are instrumental.

Always enjoyed Late Of The Pier's Hot Tent Blues
Though that might be more for the ace bit where it breaks into Broken rather than the actual intro itself.
Loui_Tacceh this'd this -
Hyperpower! - Nine Inch Nails (Year Zero)
Ides Of March - Iron Maiden (Killers)
