That is such a hard fucking question. I can barely decide which my favorite ALBUM is, let alone my favorite SONG.
On most days, it's Bankrupt on Selling, because that song is the most heartwrenching song in their catalog. On the other, Edit The Sad Parts has one of my favorite Modest Mouse lines: "Sometimes all I really wanna feel is loved / sometimes I'm angry that I'm so damn angry."
But then there are all the beautiful or fun little ones, like Birds vs. Worms, and Baby Blue Sedan, and Trailer Trash. But then there's the ones like Custom Concern, which means a lot to me (when I was younger, I wanted to be a filmmaker, and I decided that the very first song in my very first film was going to be Custom Concern. It's actually my YouTube screen name, even), or Life Like Weeds, or The Cold Part, or...
I hate to bring them up when they aren't relevant, but to be honest, I have a much easier time telling you my favorites amid Radiohead's catalog, more than I can tell you about my Modest Mouse favorites.
Unfuckwithable band, unfuckwithable brand. They truly do not get the sweeping respect that they deserve.
don't get me wrong, I loved Float On and still really enjoy it (esp when drunk, memories!) but it's not their best song... it may have one of their best riffs but song? NAWWW
I always loved that the vocals seem so distant on that song, in such a way that listening to it on headphones makes it sound like he's playing in the room with you, just behind you somewhere.
reminded just how fucking good Jeremiah's drum are, like all the time. They always sounds so crisp and he never seems to play exactly the same beat twice, always changing it up slightly. God damn best band
I think i will go with one of these 6...sorry but I just can't wittle it down any further...could be any of these depending the mood I'm in when you ask -
Gravity Rides Everything,
Paper Thin Walls,
Heart Cooks Brain,
Out of Gas,
Custom Concern
Styrofoam Boots/it's Alright on ice
I used to listen to the first half of the Moon and Antartica a lot on the way to work at Sainsbury's in the early hours of the morning, when I was at Uni. I remember once, after I learnt what the song was about, listening to it and it completely flooring me. Amazing song.
Outside naked, shiverin looking blue, from the cold
Sunlight that's reflected off the moon.
Baby cum angels fly around you reminding you we used
To be three and not just two.
And that's how the world began.
And that's how the world will end.
Has anyone mentioned What People are Made of? The whole: ''And you wound up on an island of shells and bones that bodies had left'' and the scream at the end bits are brilliant.
Parting of the Sensory?
I'm typically pretty alone in my love for We Were Dead... not my favourite, but for sure not my least favourite, definitely prefer it to Good News
Been revisiting Lonesome Crowded West and re-loving every track today. For me, Truckers Atlas has the best beats and a great improv. vibe which perfectly fits the freewheeelin' subject.
they always had that in their sound but there were all kinds of different styles going on in the earlier albums, whereas the last two are a bit one-note for me.
I've grown way more attached to them both in recent years (especially Good News...), but I felt they both sounded more 'standard' indie than unmistakeably Modest Mouse like with the earlier stuff.
it seems like they're stepping away from the sound a little bit, still elements of it but songs like 'Poison The Well' really remind me a little more of the older sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__mcNOU91Qc
Difficult choice
but I'm gonna go for Teeth Like God's Shoeshine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT0qBdHLspQ
Interstate 8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mzjjVMUu0E
Never Ending Math Equation just wins it for me
though Dramamine is easily as good
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5R38Pe-8l9M
pretty much impossible to pick
but for now i'll say Other People's Lives
COP SHOWS UP WAY DAMN LATE, I WAS EXCITED BUT USUALLY I HATE TO SEE THEM
Good point
love the outro, think it is my favourite
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOtBiwwcA90
it's not really their best song but it's got this vibe of desperation that's a bit special
been listening to it a lot lately
it's weird how songs that you know clearly aren't their best (or even your favourites)
can still sometimes catch your attention more. Often happens with Edit The Sad Parts for me
It changes everyday
But at the moment the BBC 1 Radio version of Perfect Disguise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Isuqioul1VE
Tiny Cities Made of Ashes
Doin' the Cockroach
with Bankrupt on Selling a close second
Huh.
That is such a hard fucking question. I can barely decide which my favorite ALBUM is, let alone my favorite SONG.

Sorry for the rant.
Bukowski
Probably.
lyrically, it's a highlight
and that's saying something
Float On
Fuck you all.
:D
Trailer Trash from Lonesome Crowded West (their best album too.)
Kozelek's cover of 'ocean breathes salty'
not as good as the original
hard. too hard
but off the top of my head, talking shit about a pretty sunset
Whenever You Breathe Out, I Breathe In
...possibly.
I'm one of those prefer-their-earlier-work sorts. However, really like Guilty Cocker Spaniels.
It's Float On.
Anyone that says otherwise is a try-hard indie bellend.
File next to "The Rat is the Walkmen's best track".
accidental 'this'
nah
rubbish comparison
embarrassed 4 u
NAWW
don't get me wrong, I loved Float On and still really enjoy it (esp when drunk, memories!) but it's not their best song... it may have one of their best riffs but song? NAWWW
It's favourite song, not best
So opinions always differ. Otherwise talking about music would be dull (i usually is when you get involved).
It's great but
even of the 'hit singles' Dashboard is better. <3 Dashboard
anything they did pre-marr
That put me off em big time
Trailer Trash
Used to be mine
think my enthusiasm for it died a bit when they played it at RAH and Marr laid the cheesiest dang solo in the middle of it
Trucker's Atlas
Nah, it's good but that jam at the end goes on way too long.
You're wrong.
That jam could do with an extra five minutes if you ask me.
this^
that jam is one of the best things ever
I always find myself completely sold by the outro
I used to dislike it, but I love how it progresses into quite a sparse tune with some fantastic drum and guitar interplay without being showy.
OR Styrofoam Boots/It's Alright on Ice
too tough
them drums <3
I always loved that the vocals seem so distant on that song, in such a way that listening to it on headphones makes it sound like he's playing in the room with you, just behind you somewhere.
I get a bit teary
I'm not gonna lie
Listening to Lonesome now
it's Cowboy Dan (I think)
the cold part
<3
Float On
Just an incredible track. But I can see how you could overlisten it and end up having a more personal connection to other, more emotive songs.
tough...
probably heart cooks brain.
others that are amazing imo:
you're the good things
broke
teeth like god's shoeshine
shit luck
all nite diner
birds vs worms
Shit Luck
THIS PLANE IS DEFINITELY CRASHINGGG
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tmhp_NEH12Y
Remember them playing this live
I can't believe we're actually playing this...THIS PLANE IS DEFINITELY CRASHING
headbanged the glasses right off my face when they started into that when I saw them
can't wait to listen to all of these again after work
it's definitely Trailer Trash
Honourable mentions for Dramamine and Broke
Broke has one of the best guitar sounds I've ever heard
And Bury Me With It
and loads of others.
Dark Centre of the Universe
or 3rd Planet
oh fuck, 3rd planet
how did I forget that. That's actually the shout
thats the only album by them i enjoy
whoa whoa whoa
that's not even the best one
you're both wrong
oh
what about
Float On
listening to all the old tracks
reminded just how fucking good Jeremiah's drum are, like all the time. They always sounds so crisp and he never seems to play exactly the same beat twice, always changing it up slightly. God damn best band
Doin' the Cockroach
Close second is Dukes Up. Love the guitar line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVwGGFnkHgc
And third place goes to The Stars Are Projectors.
Definately a difficult question!
I think i will go with one of these 6...sorry but I just can't wittle it down any further...could be any of these depending the mood I'm in when you ask -
Gravity Rides Everything,
Paper Thin Walls,
Heart Cooks Brain,
Out of Gas,
Custom Concern
Styrofoam Boots/it's Alright on ice
Dramamine
Bankrupt on selling and 3rd planet just behind.
Custom Concern
the parts with vocals are just really touching and desperate-sounding IMO.
3rd Planet
I used to listen to the first half of the Moon and Antartica a lot on the way to work at Sainsbury's in the early hours of the morning, when I was at Uni. I remember once, after I learnt what the song was about, listening to it and it completely flooring me. Amazing song.
Its about an abortion right?
:(
Outside naked, shiverin looking blue, from the cold
Sunlight that's reflected off the moon.
Baby cum angels fly around you reminding you we used
To be three and not just two.
And that's how the world began.
And that's how the world will end.
Yeah, those lines kill me everytime
Yeah, i've always thought it was abortion/miscarridge/child death
I just had a look on songmeanings and lots of people there think it's about adam and eve (the 3rd they lose being god) or the holy trinity...
Considering Issac Brock always comes across as a massive atheist (a lot of MM songs seems to be very anti religion) I find this quite funny.
He's had a lot of choice quotes backing this up
his lyrics even heavily imply it, those who think otherwise aren't listening properly
who aren't listening properly, the ones who think it's about Adam/Eve?
songmeanings is always full of people insisting every song is about the singer's relationship with christ
or drugs, always with the drugs
I'd only picked that up from this thread
Very moving with that in mind, and I'd thought it was a great song already.
The World at Large
I love Gravity Rides Everything
but ubh find it far too hard to choose a fav.
Has anyone mentioned What People are Made of? The whole: ''And you wound up on an island of shells and bones that bodies had left'' and the scream at the end bits are brilliant.
What's up, make love
Workin' on Leavin' the Livin'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpqH0_FwBh4
gauzey.
used to listen that that and So Long To The Holidays by Ugly Casanova any time it was the last day of a school holiday
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgEaqP4ZXzI
goddamn I miss being an angsty, overly-sincere teen :')
We've Got Everything
Third Planet/Gravity Rides Everything
actually, Florida from We Were Dead is pretty ace too
No one has any love for
Parting of the Sensory?
I'm typically pretty alone in my love for We Were Dead... not my favourite, but for sure not my least favourite, definitely prefer it to Good News
It's a great song
but by no mean my fav
Don't agree on Parting of the Sensory being my favourite
But I do share your love for We Were Dead. Brilliant album.
Dashboard
Truckers Atlas
Been revisiting Lonesome Crowded West and re-loving every track today. For me, Truckers Atlas has the best beats and a great improv. vibe which perfectly fits the freewheeelin' subject.
Was it my imagination or did I hear an R&B track
the other day, where they've sampled the guitar riff from Float On?
yes
lupe shitty fiasco
I couldn't work out if they'd ripped it off, or if they'd officially used it>
Because - on the version that I hear, anyway - it was barely recognisable.
That Pink single that was in the charts a few months ago sort of samples it
Or at the very least uses something very similar.
Float On has been bastardised a lot since release
but the American Idol version is by far the worst offender http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAXzu4PX6e0
ARRRRRRRRRRRGH
birds vs worms maybe
i don't like the shouty tracks anymore
Oh and Little Motel and Spitting Vemon from We were dead...
I know a lot seem to prefer Lonesome and Moon but Good News and We Were Dead are great albums in their own right. Those four are all equal for me.
We Were Dead has a lot of good songs on it
but it does drag in the later half
it's too much of that jaunty mid 00s indie rhythm thing
they always had that in their sound but there were all kinds of different styles going on in the earlier albums, whereas the last two are a bit one-note for me.
Yes
I've grown way more attached to them both in recent years (especially Good News...), but I felt they both sounded more 'standard' indie than unmistakeably Modest Mouse like with the earlier stuff.
From what I've heard of some of there new material
it seems like they're stepping away from the sound a little bit, still elements of it but songs like 'Poison The Well' really remind me a little more of the older sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__mcNOU91Qc
