I'd like to get more into electronic music
I've always been mainly into quite noisy guitar music but recently I've been enjoying more electronic stuff. I think it had something to do with Liars' last album, I've been enjoying that and some others like The Knife, Errors' newer stuff, Holy Fuck, and Fuck Buttons. I was already listening to people like Aphex Twin and Kraftwerk and other well known 'indie-friendly' stuff like that and I like them too. But yeah, I'd like some recommendations please.

Balam Acab- Wander/Wonder
one of my favourite albums of the last few years. Put headphones on and submerge yourself in it.
-
Oni Ayhun - OAR003
This is the second time I've recommended this in 2 days. While this is definitely edging towards house, if you like the Knife at all, give this a go.
You might also take a peek at Dust Collision by Kate Wax. Its a bit slow, and very minimal compared to the stuff you mentioned, but I've found it very rewarding.

Well based on what you already like
I'd definitely listen to Severant by Kuedo. One of the best records I've picked up on through DiS.

get the EP too
-
Seeing as you like both Balam Acab and Holy Other
I'd recommend Mister Lies. There's an EP from last year and the new album is streaming on Pitchfork:
-
The Field
Yesterday and Today is my favourite but From Here We Go Sublime and Looping State of Mind are essential too. Walls are on the same label, their Coracle album also hits the spot.

Not my area of expertise at all
But I think Amon Tobin's pretty great, I don't know if anyone else does. This is a good track

Assuming you just want two or three personal recommendations rather than
the whole "blah blah electronic music is massive this is like asking what guitar music is good" argument (which I'm sure someone will do later), then three favourites that spring to mind are:
Michael Mayer - Immer
Kashiwa Daisuke - April.#02
Blue Sky Black Death - NoirAll 10/10 for sure.

last EP was a bit rubbish though

It's one of those perfect time/place albums
that you love if it ever "clicks" properly for you. I know there are better overall records from 2011, but this remains my favourite for those true moments of realisation I've had with it.
The last EP was a bit poor, I know it's a bit presumptious of me to hope he goes back to his former sound for his next LP...but I don't want him to sully the memory of W/W like Memory Tapes has done for Seek Magic with the rubbish follow ups.

Yes
Unbelievable that it was this far into the thread before Underworld was first mentioned. Their importance cannot be underestimated even if (if we're being truthful) the newer stuff, while good, isn't quite on a par with the older stuff. Only because the older stuff is incredible.
-
I dunno aint everyone bored of Underworld, Orbital, etc now a days?
Its all old people bullshit now, everyone knows it, everyones heard it, they had their critical re-aprasials years and years ago, they where good in their time. Its kinda like going into an indie thread and suggesting Oasis. Come on guys, get with the new shit.
-
The awful truth: a lot of the new shit isn't on the level of these older and better artists
jimitheexploder, nobody stops you to listen to the new stuff. I enjoy SOME of the new stuff, I don't listen only to older artists.
A lot of the new shit may be technically more complex or diverse, but it lacks the melody, the warmth, the catchiness of the old stuff. It's simply too amorphous or cold; almost nothing memorable. Just a bunch of sounds without strong songwriting and arrangements behind. It enters in one ear and exits on the other one.
Few new artists can compare with oldies like Underworld, Orbital, The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, FSOL, Global Communication, Spooky, Kraftwerk, Biosphere, Fluke, Apoptygma Berzerk, Covenant, VNV Nation, Tangerine Dream, Leftfield, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Jean Michel Jarre, Faithless, Gary Numan, The Human League, Ritchie Hawtin, Speedy J etc. Those few artists are indeed great.
Artists like Underworld or Kraftwerk deserve to be mentioned often when talking about electronic music in the same way as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones are mentioned in rock music.
"Come on guys, get with the new shit". But don't forget the classics. The new shit is based (sometimes derivative) on the work of those classics.
DriftingSkeleton this'd this -
there is a strain of electronic music fans that only look back
and its really odd. When people make this thread in 20 years time people like you will be checking out Kuedo and DJ Rashad for teh first time and saying they're classics but they'll be ignored in the day and age they where made. Doesn't it get boring just listening to old shit.
-
It doesn't get boring
You don't have enough time just to listen to all old stuff ONCE. There's a lot of stuff to listen since the synths were invented.
"there is a strain of electronic music fans that only look back"
Some of them only look back because (surprise, surprise) they find the old stuff to be better. They find the new stuff boring, annoying, or uninspired. Instead Skrillex and Deadmau5, they choose to listen to Daft Punk and Groove Armada for example. They refuse to be hip and cool just for the sake of it.
-
:')
Groove Armada
Comaboy this'd this -

I got it: you're too hipster for Groove Armada. You only listen to new obscure shit, that nobody ever heard of it. I guess I'm wasting my precious time explaining you some obvious facts. Sayonara.

Rustie? Jesus...
What a waste of decibels. Ultra Thizz is the worst thing I've heard in 2011...
With very few exceptions, loads of unknown artists. These names don't tell me anything.
-
dunno
since this is like a recommendation thread for someone just getting into electronic music it makes sense to recommend 'classics'? I mean not that I'm a fan of, say, Underworld
plus listening to new electronic music is total ballache because so much is produced all the time. I mean the rolling dance mongrel thread is on like 350 replies already and february's not even over.
anyway I'm not really sure what my point is. DJ Rashad is amazing.

I'm just teasing dude. I like a bit of Underworld and Orbital I mean everyone does. Just trying to show that there is a boring nostalgic always looking back mentality with a lot of indie/dance fans. Coming into threads like this can be depressing when there is so much good stuff going on now and the last few years and you see old people coming in and talking about Underworld for the millionth time. Can't wait for twenty years time when you find LCD Soundsystem and Electroclash.
-

seriously the worst
-
just stiring shit up a bit
so we can have a thread like the hip-hop one the other day. Where we get an awsome nieve request for music and give suggestions but then get into a debate about boring old stuff and Groove Armada.
But yeah thats whats so awsome about electronic music so much is being made that you pretty much neevr have to look that far back to be really entertained. IF its dawnting thats good, it means there is a fuck load of stuff to wade thru, its always movign forward and moving fast and thats a big draw for me.
-
You cry and laugh a lot, dude. You have a problem.
"Can't wait for twenty years time when you find LCD Soundsystem and Electroclash."
Your wait is over. I know very well about LCD Soundsystem & Electroclash. I know a lot of good electronic stuff, old and new. You try way to hard to be sarcastic. And guess what? It doesn't work against me.

I find the amount of albums in this thread weird...
It's a singles based culture so grab yourself some label retrospectives and jump on from there. Once you've figured out what you like it's easier to narrow it down a bit.
Can't go wrong with Trax, Nu-Groove, Moving Shadow, Hyperdub, Warp, Hessle Audio, Planet E, Basic Channel as a starter
jimitheexploder this'd this -
DiSisAcid this'd this
-
ah, shit yeah, and Ice Cream Records and
there's no retrospective for it but anything with DPR should be essential too.
-
I recommend albums in threads like these
because its how I generally prefer to listen to music. I think the fact that it is a singles based culture is probably why I haven't gotten into electronic as much as other genres, but there are still plenty of full legths worth investigating.
-
^This
If anything the singles culture made things like house and techno seem really impenetrable, particularly seeing as the genres I got into when I was first getting into music were all album based.
-
Yeah I tend to just post albums in these kinds of threads
Cos I know thats how people like this want to experience their music. Its tough enough getting people to listen to the good new stuff as it is without posting a million singles or even EPs too.
badmanreturns this'd this -
there definitely are ones worth investigating
But generally the best moments of every one of the sub-genres are on eps, white labels, etc. Most of the time when you give an electronic artist an album length, with very few exceptions, it ends up being a bit of a droney ambient mess compareed to the immediacy of the tracks they release as singles.
-
I know what you mean, I had the same struggles
when I first got into dance music. Generally with dance music once you've found a label you like you can work out from there though. It's less about the producer and more about who's releasing their stuff generally.
-
As I listen to more drone/ambient stuff
This is no bad thing to me ;)
-
I dunno I like some of the stuff you posted up thread
but a lot of it doesn't stand up now a days bar the odd one, maybe some Autechre. The rest are outshadowed by a lot of the new ones I posted. All just opinion tho innit. I can stand listening to The Orb or 808 State nowadays it sounds embarasing and really dated to me. Same with Orbital and Underworld for the most part. If its what moves you its all cool, but yeah there is some insane new shit that deserves a push, since its so current and damn good and its good to play it off the old stuff cos its healthy to move forward and enjoy stuff now.
-
The new artists that I know are not on his list
Got it? They're way too unknown.
Let's take totally random, Jahilyya Fields. On last.fm there are just 679 listeners: http://www.last.fm/music/Jahiliyya+Fields

-
Unknown doesn't mean bad tho
just means that more people need to hear it, which is why I post about stuff like that if I find it and like it.

-
Unknown doesn't mean bad tho: I agree
But it was really necessary to pot your comment(s) on my Underworld sub-topic? Just because they're more mainstream?
-
dunno
depepends how you go into it I guess. If you want to be some kind of completist then its going to be hard. But its so easy just to get the odd single and move around the genres. If you dig what you hear cool, look around. Dunno why anyone would get put off because they're is so much going on. Its prob one of the best things about it if you ask me.
-
I guess a key component of album based cultures
Is revisiting them and also spending time exploring their greater depths. This is almost certainly less the case with singles, I'd imagine fewer people revisit the best singles from, say, 2010 than they do with albums.
But the difference doesn't mean one is good/right and the other is bad/wrong, but they suit individual preferences to varying degrees.
-
Accidental this
Balls to this old and new stuff, quality on a personal level is what matters. Albums like Orbus Terrarum sound completely out of time and will always be interesting to me.
-
I dunno
Some of my favourte labels haven't ever realsesed an album. You still hear singles from whenever in clubs or in mixes. Things come back into trend and fall off again. I mean is there less care in singles on labels like Hessle Audio and Skull Disco? Those two labels haven't released an album, just a comp or two of singles and new stuff.
-
Personaly
I think there is to much high esteem and respect for a lot of older artists. I think its fun and necacerry to burst that nostalgic, boring bubble and move on. Make a clean break and see things with fresh eyes again. Espesh with stuff thats already had its reaprasial so many times like Underworld or whoever have. It was good when it happened and if you get joy from it, wicked. Personaly I'm all for moving on and calling it shit, fuck the past and move on.
-
I reckon seeing stuff as dated is the wrong mentality to have when it comes to music. If it`s good it`s good. I listen to music for it`s abstact/subjective qualities rather the just for the lastest sounds/technical side of things.
-
I don't reallt believe that if something is good at one point that it has to be good forever
Context changes, ideas get played out and watered down, nostalgia fuzzies the idea of what something is or was. Things change, peoples tastes change. Its all good. Some things come and go and sound good again something don't, its just the way of things. Some stuff is very of its time and some stuff isn't. Thats the same for new stuff as it is old stuff.
-
I don`t why you should fuck the past though
Why does time have to be so important when it comes to music? Dance/Electronic music is just archaic revival stuff anyway. Technically things change but it`s all just tapping into the same things.
-
because its more fun to live in the now
there is always some kinda foot in the past but if you stick to it to rigidly then things get really stale and you end up just listening to The Orb or something. Its just more fun to go with the flow of new stuff and you get the enjoyment of it, get moived along with it. You find the odd bit of old stuff as you go since it always crops up and it shows its self in new ways but you never get to washed up in it and bogged down. Plus there is so much stuff going on right now that I don't reall ysee the point of looking back that much.
-
And to me...
The Orb, Underworld, Orbital, Leftfield, etc all sound really dated and played out. The ideas have been run dry, things have moved on and its cool to live it in the past. Plus its fun to play heel against the old guard to give more attention to vital up and comers that deserve way more love.
-
plus
there are clubs to go to to hear it, a whole social thing going on. You don't get that if you're so nostalgic. Young peeps these days are so happy to be nostalgic and ignore the good shit going on right now. The internet has made it so boring, safe and easy to be nostalgic and dissmiss whats going on right now that people get sucked into it and its a shame. Its a good quality in music to sack off the past some of the best genres have come out of that kind of move. Punk, acid house, grime, whatever all sacked off people before them and it made them better for it.
-
Yeah but because of this internet malarkey you have the freedom to follow your own path and explore the past and present. You can live in your own little musical world if you choose.
-
This thread has turned into an Old v New argument..
...I think that it is important to recommend some old classics ( though 20 YouTube links to Underworld tracks is a tad farcical) however you can find info about old classics on 101 other websites. What is valuable to be able to use word of mouth to discover recent tunes. I value Dis because I discovered Talabot, Shackleton, Demdike Stare through these forums. This knowledge is far more useful than some halfwit saying You must listen to Groove Armada and the Human League.

It tends to be a lot more expensive and sort of exclusionary though
Until people like boomkat, bleep etc started letting you buy digital versions of stuff it restricted lots of people who didn't have turntables. Even now, not everything you want to hear is available.
I'm a giant music fan and I probably spend more on music than just about anything, but because I've moved around so much I've never invested in a really decent stereo or turntables. Sacrilege I know, but there are plenty like me who lack the means to do so, let alone to keep up with the rush of singles that get put out on a weekly basis. That's if you've even got access to a good record shop which stocks that kind of stuff. Living away from the UK, there aren't many shops or mailorder places that cover even a portion of the stuff we talk about in rolling dance mongrel.
I love singles and I love the idea of EPs as they are almost always more digestible and higher quality than all but the best albums, but their availability is problematic.
-
yeah its good
bit of a return to some of his older sounds. Sajtban is a classic
-
yep
and the new stuff I post now is only gonna be peoples nostalgic shit in years to come and a lot of people will kick themselves in 20 years when they could have lived it instead of just lookign at old stuff all the time.
-
But does it really matter though if what you`re listening to right now is giving you a buzz/what you want. Plus people are always gonna miss out on good shit because the amount of music out there.
-
I don't even know what 'electronic music' is anymore
and judging by this thread I'm not alone in that
-
It's albums that really got me into electronic music
(Burial, Benga, Skream, 2562, Martyn) and from there I started to delve into singles and EPs, but even to this day I find it kinda overwhelming. That's why I'd always recommend albums to people who are just starting to explore.
-
Some stuff which hasn't been mentioned yet:
Ellen Allien & Apaarat: Orchestra of Bubbles
Gui Boratto: Chromaphobia
Fairmont: Coloured In Memory
Trentemoller: The Last Resort
Alex Smoke: Incommunicado
Michna: Magic Monday
Telefon Tel Aviv: Immolate Yourself
Loco Dice: 7 Dunham Palace
Lone: Galaxy Garden and Emerald Fantasy TracksA couple of more recent EPs I love (within the last few years):
Pariah: Safehouses
Space Dimension Controller: Temporary ThrillzLoads of different styles there, but all pretty accessible.
-
Four Tet
especially the last couple of records. There is Love in You, Everything Ecstatic and Pink have all been excellent.

you can easily go wrong with trax and nu-groove - there's some absolute shite on those labels haha. i feel ya though (y)
-
oh fucking hell. just sack all this off and listen to throbbing gristle, it'll be less hassle.
DaddyorChips this'd this -
I've been listening to Holy Other non-stop since Saturday.
Love Some1 is astounding.
Cheers, thread.

hey op, i notice that you also have a mclusky themed username, so i assume we're coming at this from similar backgrounds. you've said that you're already familiar with indie-friendly stuff, so i'll assume that it is electronic dance music that you're looking to get into.
this might seem like a strange question, but how familiar are you with the NY no wave scene? i ask because my personal route into dance music was from the noisier no wave stuff like teenage jesus and dna, into the funkier esg and liquid liquid, and from there into funk and disco, and then chicago house, electro and detroit techno.
this might not be the most conventional route, but perhaps it's one you'll be able to relate too! i think some of the suggestions in this thread might be a bit 'in at the deep end', and by taking a more gradual approach you'll gain a better understanding of how different sounds developed and influenced each other. you'll also be able to figure out what particular sounds you're into along the way - i'm 'into electonic music' but i still don't like lots of the stuff suggested in this thread.
-
ah well I meant the retrospectives
they are pretty much wall to wall bangers on there
fuck_this_band this'd this -
I'm not familiar with no-wave at all really. I'll give some of them a go. I have been slowly working my way through the reccomendations in this thread and have enjoyed most of them but yeah, I don't really have any understanding of the development of electronic music at all really so maybe your approach will help. Cheers!
-
I think a really good place to start is Soul Jazz compilations
they've really branched out beyond just roots and reggae type stuff. Both volumes of Box of Dub are pretty much essential for dubstep and they have tonnes of other electronic stuff.
-
I've always found it more exhilerating jumping in
rather than calculating a root thru history and time. Then you don't get the sense that its some kind of homework and you should really like these artists becuase they're old and respected, important or whatever. If you jump in find something you like then explore out I just find it more fun. That way you come to the history of it as you go along rather than slogging thru some old dudes.
-
they do have the odd good comp tho yeah
do they do the roots of dubstep and roots of El-B ones I can't remember? they're ace, could have been by rinse.
-
Isn't that Tempa?
Thought they released most of the El-B stuff?
The Kevin Martin and Stewart Baker curated dub/dubstep comp is absolutely brilliant. http://www.souljazzrecords.co.uk/releases/?id=23718
Future Bass is really good too, haven't heard the others like Steppas Delight and Riddim Box.
-
Came here to post From Here We Go Sublime
-
Four Tet's Rounds is probably a better entry point into his work tho, no?
-
the classic intro to no wave
is the No New York compilation
it's not really the dancier side though
-
Mum's first album
Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is OK. Damn near perfect, everything they've done since has been progressively worse (to my ears)
-
If you like noisy stuff
There's loads of noisy techno about right now. Blawan, Karenn, Perc, Truss, Ancient Methods and many others. then there's the classic 90s stuff like Regis, Surgeon, The Black Dog etc.
jimitheexploder this'd this -
you want to listen to that robert miles champ
piano trance is the real shit.
-
this might help tbh...
http://www.sonicrouter.com/2013/02/sr-mix-151-doubleheart-high-sheen/
They did a mix for us recently its a guy from Optimo who you can't go far wrong with in terms of showing you pretty much every fun bit of dance music history in one set tbh and Niel Landstrumm whoes been making electro for years.
Its an insperation mix full of old electro, kinda odd no wave stuff, post-punk, disco, rock, dub, house and it all sounds seamless like a DJ mix just like dance music should be.
-
DaddyorChips this'd this
-
Tempa/Rinse
same company I always forget.
the dub ones are pretty much always ace from what I've heard.
Dunno about the future bass one, its a case of ace artists but not their best tracks like a lot of these dubstep comps. As a jump off point they're good I guess but they might hold people back from going much further. Just like a Radiohead remix album with guys like Blawan, Shed, Objekt, whoever... no one is gonna say those are the best tracks they've done but they're amazing artists.
-
dude..
lot of these guys release their stuff on vinyl so linking to lastfm (scrobbles?) is spectacularly pointless and meaningless
DaddyorChips this'd this -
Caribou - Swim
did it for me, followed by Music Has The Right To Children by Boards of Canada.
-
compilations might be a good idea tho...
Lable and artsist ones are usualy better than genre ones tho.
Hyperdub - 5
Hessle Audio - 116 & Rising
Punch Drunk - 'Worth the Weight - Bristol Dubstep Classics'
Tectonic - Tectonic Plates Vol.1 to whatever
Deep Medi - Deep Medi Releases Vol.1 to whatever
Terror Danjah - Gremlinz
Ruff Sqwad - White Label Classics -
Enjoying this, thanks.
-
maybe
depends how you feel about the acoustic sounding early stuff. It actually put me off originally.
-
it looks like it's actually ms shittypenguin
plot twist

Gold Panda's 'Lucky Shiner' is one of my favourite electronic albums in recent memory.
