Cool bands with a cool menacing-air about them
Like the Black Angels.
I need more of this kind of stuff, cheers.

I'm all for this

If you'd said Neko Case, I'd have been impressed
as it is, yes, you're playing it wrong.
Depeche Mode
The Strokes
Maybe this comment in a thread..

The Glitter Band
Lostprophets
the '70s band

Iceage
The Birthday Party
HTRK...
Girls Against Boys
Listened to Kill the Sexplayer
On the right track, but thought song was average at best, sorry.
They got better

Bearing in mind that "cool" and "menacing" are extremely broad, I'd say Sunn0))) and Barn Owl were both in their element here. Not "cool" in the conventional sense, but "cool" if you like their music, which is indeed notably menacing.
Sunn 0)))
definitely have something very cool about them - more of an arty cool than a trendy cool but very cool nonetheless
EARTH
The Knife
Swans
Actually I dunno-Earth are certainly cool, but menacing?
Yeah, they are, soz.
Absolutely.
The Misused Hyphens
Crystal Castles
Definitely!
nah
them two couldn't menace me
You're kidding?
Did you see some interviews with them? Did you see some live performances with them? Did you see their artwork?
They fit perfectly to "Cool bands with a cool menacing-air about them". Not menacing like Rammstein or Motorhead, just enough cool menacing-air.
Nah
they have an air of 'trying too hard to be cool and have a menacing air about them' about them.
Yeah, Rammstein have never been menacing- Laibach, on the other hand...
Laibach? Laibach?
Laibach? Ill give you Laibach...
QOTSA used to have this quality
Early Public Image Limited
first 2 or 3 albums.
Link Wray
Pixies
Odonis Odonis
Dz Deathrays
Pixies? menacing? Certainly cool and very strange, but I wouldn't say menacing.
I don't know
there's something slightly unhinged about them.
Curve
Iconic picture: http://www.curve.co.uk/images/tdpics/curvemain.jpg
Dean Garcia & Antoinette 'Toni' Halliday rock.
The Afghan Whigs
Really glad nobody has said Death Grips here.
But a bit disappointed nobody has mentioned the Bad Seeds.
I thought about it, but decided The Birthday Party would give me more cred.
Garbage
Of course, Garbage:

http://paranoid13xforever.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/garbage-v008.jpg
Shirley Manson always seems cool & a bit menacing. Esp. when Garbage performs live. I've seen them live last year and they really rocked.
JAMC
The Cure
Siouxsie & The Banshees
nah
the Cure are awkward as fuck, that's what makes them so amazing
They're a bit menacing with their haircuts & outfits
Esp. Robert Smith & their guitarist
You mean, er, their other guitarist?
Here's a few that haven't been mentioned:
BEAK> - Wulfstan II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udkoNdjLzTg
Weekend - Monday Morning/Monongah, WV (amazing video, which adds to the menacing vibe, for two songs from their album, Sports)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jR9JQn2HalE
The Soft Moon - Breathe The Fire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zr8ljQD0XkE
The Soft Walls - Black Cat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SeZNR1Yin8
Women - China Steps
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LElqwoBOJE
and Liars (obviously) - Scissor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04domJ7F0oY
I have discog on most of those
But please recommend Beak record, thx.
I've only got the second Beak record but yeah it'
s really good
Their second album: > >
I'd also defnitely recommend the single they put out late last year Mono/Kenn. Give (almost) everything of theirs a listen here: http://beak.bandcamp.com/
MC5
Can
Faust
Einsturzende Neubauten
Can menacing?
What about Throbbing Gristle? (btw, I don't like this band)
Musically, rather than as people
Yeah, I'd say Throbbing Gristle too, and obviously Suicide, Coil, The Leather Nun and all that lot.
Early Jefferson Airplan had something sinister about them.
So did the Dandy Warhols.
Love this picture:
http://www.duduki.net/photocache/19/performer//Jefferson%20Airplane/tn_400__cover.jpg
Calla
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z-LBp5RqG4
Karate - There Are Ghosts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cp6oNWxr8-Q
Calla, yes! I played that album to bits when I first got it.
Collisions is decent too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXZFiJGni7o
Didn't listen to the last one, but they're demoing for the new one, apparently.
Suicide
Early Young Knives as well. They seemed a horrible bunch.
Well, the 2 brothers did, anyway.
I don't think being a cunt who makes shit music qualifies someone as cool or menacing though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV_Hp9r90J0
What an awful fucking band.
The first ep's and most of the first album were good.
I agree that they're awful now though.
Would The Horrors, circa Primary Colours - count?
No
Cool, but not menacing
*not cool
The Forestry Commission
www.theforestrycommission.com
Home page
doesn't make for an easy sample track.
-"Formed in early 2012 largely through a frustration at the lack of UK guitar music being released"
Proper lads, proper tunes.
'The band are playing venues right now.'
the Wu-Tang Clan
Public Enemy
also Rage Against the Machine
Morphine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgvBWR0Tr7I
Raime
Quite different in sound to many of the suggestions mentioned so far but fit the description of cool and menacing quite well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd1EEeNPDAc
The Warlocks (particularly around the time they released Heavy Deavy Skull Lover)
Love
the Who
mid to late '60s Stones
The Jesus Lizard
...and Big Black. Killdozer et al.
Not mentioned so far:
A.R.E. Weapons
Death in Vegas
The Velvet Underground
Primal Scream for a very brief period when Xtrmntr came out, that faded quickly though.
Hype Williams
has no one mentioned
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds yet?
what is wrong with you all
Someone has.
The Cooper Temple Clause
had it momentarily back there
Happy Flowers
here's a few no one's mentioned
bauhaus
chrome
killing joke
sisters of mercy
cabaret voltaire
the stooges
We should all die for not mentioning Chrome, The Stooges, Kiling joke or Cab Voltaire.
Then die. I'm excepted... :)
Mobb Deep
It can't get more menacing than this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH4IopdiKak
ballerinas
are not menacing
Oh yeah.
Completely forgot about that.
Coil
COIL know how to destroy Angels. How to paralyse. Imagine the world in a bottle. We take the bottle, smash it, and open your throat with it. I warn you we are Murderous. We massacre the logical revolts. We know everything! We know one thing only. Absolute existence, absolute motion, absolute direction, absolute Truth. NOW, HERE, US.
still haven't fixed the quotation marks I see
That was from the 1st Coil press release.
Holy shit!
So much arrogance.
lol.
The Stone Roses
Esp. because of their singer, Ian Brown.
:D
The Icarus Line surely?
also Ink & Dagger
I would file Post War Glamour Girls under these categories.
http://postwarglamourgirls.bandcamp.com/
Witchman
Death from Above 1979?
Grinderman?
Suuns
Eraas
oh and these guys
who I stumbled on yesterday. Sound a bit like Bauhaus.
http://exhaustion.bandcamp.com/
Slint
Part Chimp
Wooden Shjips
Brainbombs?
Brainbombs
Aaargh, why didn't I say Brainbombs?
Have you heard Teenage Graves? Brainbombs and Totalitar bassist's other band, proper Stooges worshipping scuzz:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCKMwEOio9s
oh and This Heat
for sure
Cult of Luna?
their new album doesn't really do menace so much as grandeur though.
Converge on the other hand
Chrome
Cop Shoot Cop
Pere Ubu
Factory Floor
Brian Jonestown Massacre
Iceage?
i know theyre not too popular on dis these days but i saw them in edinburgh in november and it was a pretty intimidating and menacing show, but with some really great music. not entirely sold on the new album tho.
are they not all image and no trousers
compared to non-Vice/Pitchfork/instragramwave punk and hardcore bands?
Six By Seven

^This
Many, many times
Exciting things are happening in the Chris Olley camp at the mo'.
Death Of Six By Seven should be announcing gigs soon.
Mm, so far so good...
*listens to clip*
Will investigate. Recommend a record?
The Closer You Get
Fantastic, jaw dropping album.
Has this on it, amongst other things.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alGb7Hbm9Mc
Skrewdriver
ARE Weapons
Clinic / Raveonettes
(when the mood takes 'em)
Oh, yeah
Clinic is totally creepy... :)
Charles Manson and the Family
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Charles+Manson
Incidentally, I heard a new Black Angels track today
which I did not love. *shrugs* Hope it was my mood, my overly critical response to Cobain-like "don't use a gun"/the-singer-doth-protest-too-much trope...and that new album strikes me better.
Front 242
Headhunter is a cracking tune.
Health, Einsturzende Neubaten, Dalek
