track 7 might be the best song they've made, and it shares a melody with 'gamelan' by gy!be

My Bloody Valentine
bought it just now, will listen later
Don't expect it to better than Loveless, I just want it to be good enough to feel it was worth waiting for / releasing. That'll do me.
not bad
couple bangers
first impression was that it sounds more like Loveless than I thought it would
not saying that's a good thing or bad thing, just sayin'
i think if they had put the last three tracks first people would be saying that less though
feels like the album is actually a progression from loveless as it happens
it's official
who ever thought this band is mega overrated, it's not with this album that you will change your mind.
I may have to come back to it later, unfortunately
but my impressions on the first three tracks: very 'Loveless', but with a weird sense of more clarity in the production... anyone else think it sounds more Dinosaur Jr.-ish than expected (the guitar tones, mainly)
aye, it definitely grows as an album
oh yeah, track 4's pretty promising
I was hoping for more ambient / electronicky stuff. This is starting nicely.
blogged it
http://thechannelcircle.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/new-mbv.html
I've edited that post and put an actual wanky, overlong blog post
(before it was just me saying I was listening to it as a sort of rubbish joke, now it's a textual mess)
I got the Dinosaur Jr. vibes too
I'm writing a review of the record right now, and I likened "Only Tomorrow" to a Dinosaur Jr. riff on morphine.
I'm lying in bed listening
and my left ear is about 10 inches from my left bookshelf speaker. It's on quite loud. It sounds alright.
Kevin Shields would want you to have the full stereo experience.
He's probably reading your post and crying.
* setting the three OTHER new albums that were going to be released today on fire, saying ''no-one can appreciate my work properly, through Kevin Shields Beats headphones. DAMN THE PUBLIC''
i've turned my head on my side a bit so i get more 'stereo'
feels stupid
track 6 is so happy
it's making me imagine the character select screen of some mega ethereal kart racing game
unfortunately the rest of the album's gonna have to wait
it's my own fault for wanting to listen to it IMMEDIATELY, not considering other commitments. Kevin should've consulted me regarding my schedule.
It`s alright
But I`d prefer it without vocals and more Jungle [last track].
i'm only five songs in, so far I thought the first two songs reminded me of the lost in translation one he did, ok but pretty basic. Third song seemed more familiar.
They seem like they could be the basic mangled guitar tracks on loveless, but then loveless would add a super manipulated sampled lead line that took it to the next level.
Effect wise it seems theyve cut back alot on the reverse reverb, I dont like the distortion on a couple of tracks (track 2 mainly), sounds like one of these really modern boutique fuzz with the cool names but sound like velcro
sounds like all the bits of Loveless I'd normally skip
on 1st listen..
they should have called 'nothing is' 'filler'
I like that one
sounds like something off a noise cdr release! It's like Astral Social Club with a few less layers
the whole album seems canny good
Best song on the album
Is This (filler?) And (the answer is) Yes
Really like it.
Only Tomorrow is my favourite off it so far. So happy it has finally come out!!!!!!!11!!!111!
.....
It's ok. Didn't exacty blow me away on first listen though. Hard to say it's a 'bad' album, but I found it hard to get excited by much on it.
the artwork is so rubbish
surprised no one put track 7 into the 7s thread yet
Two listens so far
As an MBV fan who prefers the You Made Me Realise/Feed Me With Your Kiss/Only Shallow side of the band, I'm not blown away. Tails off pretty badly too.
tails off?!
That was fun.
Last track BOSSED it.
The one before was amazing but I would have liked them to drop it out into a little coda with Bilinda cooing all lovely like over it.
Track one was a good introduction. Familiar yet not the same.
Aside from that it was a mixed bag. I have ZERO problems with them making tracks similar to Loveless (it's probably the greatest album of that decade, so...) And they've made an admirable attempt at mixing it up. is this and yes was absolutely lovely too.
In my dreams I might have expected to come face to face with God. Obviously didn't happen, but I'm still pleased with the album. I think it might be a bit of a grower too.
7.2/10
she found now is gorgeous
definitely my favourite thing on here. Other standouts are only tomorrow, who sees you and new you (that bass!). Kinda disappointed in the last 3 tracks though, all of them have the parts of classic MBV songs but they don't quite come together at the moment.
So far I'm not blown away, but still very glad this came out
well that backlash didn't take long to get started
It had the potential to be an utter disappointment but in fact it's great
I can't help but feel that had they released it mid-nineties then it would have been universally panned and then suffered the indifference that greeted Slowdive's Pygmalion. By waiting so long it's been released in an era where shoegazing is remembered fondly and not seen as a musical embarrassment, so good timing! They might make some money selling it themselves too. Clearly Kevin Shields foresaw all of this and isn't the indolent slacker that he was presumed to be but is a patient visionary instead...
Not sure I follow tbh.
i think i agree
if they'd kept releasing regularly the press and fan would've given up (see examples of nearly every band ever) but by having some significant distance between it and the bulk of their career it can be appraised independent of the trends and whims of a regular music cycle
I agree
My friend raved about Loveless when we were at school but at the time 'shoegaze' was a derogatory term. The only thing grunge and shoegaze fans at my school agreed on was Siamese Dream 2 years later. I didn't get into Loveless until it kept being mentioned in reviews of Fennesz,s Endless Summer.
The only thing I would say is that they should have released it 3 years ago when the shoegaze revival was at its peak.
In Another Way (track 7) is definitely the best thing on it, and one of the best songs they've ever done
Only Tomorrow and Wonder 2 are the other skyscrapers. The rest ranges from ok to good. Very good album, then. ThirstyDog's comment about how it 'tails off' seems mad, really, given that to my ears the last 3 tracks take it to the next level
In Another Way (track 7) is definitely the best thing on it, and one of the best songs they've ever done
[+1]
I'm not that impressed about m b v
It's nowhere near as good as Loveless. But probably it's a grower.
I miss the most a song like Soon.
I love how the album builds.
To me, m b v feels like it should be played directly after the end of Soon on Loveless. I feel like I should give this record a lot of time before I make a real decision.
I had a huge expectation for this record, and it's delivering.
I love it
Everytime I listen to it I like it more and more.
I like it
but nothing really has the impact of the opening of Only Shallow. If it'd been a stylistic change it'd be foolish to compare but does seem ploughing the same furrow, which is doing it not too many favours.
Having said that they seem more understated and lovely, could well be a huge grower.
A random thought
If MBV would have done a song like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvK_AY5gfeY
...on their new album, I bet that everyone would say it's a masterpiece. Right?
dunno, what's the song?
Tinnitus Awareness Week begins tomorrow.

more random thoughts, having listened to it more throughout the day
*
I was surprised at the response for track 7. It's good, but certainly didn't strike me as so immediately: took me off guard (especially with that intro!) but has really grabbed me since. I'm sure the album's going to be a grower (like all of MBV's work, to be honest).
*
Am I right to think that the title of 'Nothing Is' is a funny little reference to 'Isn't Anything'? There seems to be a fair bit of knowing humour throughout the album: someone noted the potential of the wind tunnel sound of 'Wonder 2' being a possible bit of self parody, and the aforementioned intro to track 7 took me by surprise and has left me with a bit of a grin.
*
I'm glad someone raised that quote where people have said it's a stranger album than 'Loveless', and him saying he personally disagreed. Because it's sort of both: there are lots of strange and experimental things going on on this album, but the overall tone seems far more grounded and earthbound than Loveless's 'otherworldliness'.
*
I wasn't keen on the artwork at first. I liked the blue, just not the 'mbv' pasted over it. That's growing on me.
ooh!
also, a lot of the second half of the album is definitely more akin to his remix work. Esp. the guitar effects going on 'If I Am' (which is a personal highlight).
overall, it feels so weird to be listening to it right now
Imagine if they release another album tonight
I'd love it if they decided to put an end to their reputation
by releasing albums every day, gradually getting just increasingly shit awful and then reaching high art levels of audacity.
I also wouldn't love it.
'new you' might be the happiest thing I've ever heard
That second track is delicious
Can we dwell briefly on just how long 21 years actually is?
Has there been a longer gap between albums ever?
I was 19 when Loveless came out and it seems a world away. And a fair proportion of those buying the new album wouldn't have been born.
Crazy. The world is crazy. It is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vashti_Bunyan
Should've F5'd.
Vashti Bunyan took 35 years for a follow-up
Just Another Diamond Day (1970) --> Lookaftering (2005)
Probably some other people have done longer.
There were also about 35 years between Mississippi John Hurt's first recordings and his "rediscovery"
The thing about this compared with Vashti Bunyan, Mission of Burma etc
..is that those other artists weren't recording at that time. Mission Of Burma had broken up.
I know MBV had 'broken up' for a while but Kevin Shields had been tinkering with this for a very large chunk of that 21 years.
Bill Fay at 41 years is the record I reckon
Mission Of Burma was 22 years between albums
I definitely know it's a long gap
When Loveless was released, I was about 3 months old. Now I'm 21.
I was one when it came out.
Now my son is one.
I started teaching....
just after Loveless came out...I've been teaching for 23 years now. The preschoolers I had then are now finishing college.
Has anyone noticed that Shields is basically asking for
nearly $30 USD (with shipping) to buy the CD version of this?
yeah, it's a joke
even the download on its own is over $15. Not fucking likely.
The cover art has ruined it
its not THAT bad.
It's a horrible shade of blue and the text is just a fucking joke
Should have just took a photo of a motorway at night
If you look at a LQ picture it may look like 'horrible shade of blue' but...
The cover seems 3D to me. Just look at a higher resolution version: http://i.imgur.com/DMnmqaB.jpg
There are many things on it. And the overall effect is great.
it really is
Looks good there
wow
and now I'm spending ages trying to find the 'b' in the more hidden mbv in the middle
it says 'nothing is this and yes i really love you' too :)
Better version!
(previously, the imgur suckers re-encoded my original picture from 2.1 MB to a crappy 375 kbps; it's hard to find a decent pictures host these days)
http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/5518/mybloodyvalentinembv.jpg
Yeah we definitely lose nothing with just digital artwork
that image totally changes the cover
I like it.
Looks like a MBV cover. Job done.
Tracks 6 and 7 are my current favourites.
But then I'm only halfway through 7 atm.
But yeah, what I've listened to, with the exception of Is This And Yes (which I don't think works well melodically & therefore don't like)
Is very very Loveless. But then I suppose Loveless is one of my favourite albums of all time.
Oh, and Wonder 2 would have been great had they not bothered with that pissing flanger effect on the drums.
I think one issue I might have is that the whole thing sounds so obviously nineties, as if this album should have just been released in 1993 or something. Not a huge gripe, cos overall its been pretty great, just was hoping for a more modern production vibe, an updated MBV if you will.
"flanger effect on the drums"
best part of the song. Sounds like the aircraft flying over my house as they take off and land.
Really enjoying it so far
A lot of reviews are making Stereolab comparisons, and I can see why. The skittery drum'n'bass thing going on in 'Wonder 2' totally reminds me of 'Parsec' off Dots and Loops.
Am I the only one that quite likes the artwork?
just the text i wasn't keen on
grown on me, though
I like the cover
I'm also a fan of the color blue (plus black).
I love it
I was surprised by the dryer guitar sound at first, but it works really well and every song just gels brilliantly together. Can't wait to see them live now!
drier even
Well worth the wait for that correction.
Someone needs to till him baggy isn't A Thing anymore.
They should also tell him.
Can we start calling it S/T?
For self-titled?
Because M B V or m b v (how ever the fuck they want it to be capitalized) is really tedious to type.
It really isn't that difficult to type.
Just type mbv if you want, people will know what you're talking about.
eponymous
pony mouse
JFC. You have to hit 5 keys
all of which are right fucking next to each other.
After a few more listens
I'm still underwhelmed. It's pleasant enough but it doesn't really add anything to their legacy and for once they are following rather than leading. First 3 tracks sound like offcuts from Loveless, and whilst I really like Is This And Yes & New You, they sound like Stereolab & St Etienne respectively. The noisier stuff is OK but it's the kind of stuff that Kevin & Primal Scream did much better on XTRMNTR, a mere 13 years ago.
Can't see me playing it even half as much as I still play the other two albums to be honest.
I agree with all the comparisons here
with the exception that such similarities enhance rather than diminish my enjoyment of the album.
If there's something in particular about mbv that makes it comparatively weaker than Loveless it's that songs/melodies/grooves on the former aren't as good as those on the latter. At least, not at first (or second) listen.
I'll listen to mbv a lot more than Loveless, I reckon, for the simple fact that I don't listen to Loveless all that much (but will probably give it more frequent airing this year than I have across the last ten or more).
The big problem for me
is that it doesn't sound like a cohesive album the way Loveless did - I suspect that's because it's been recorded on & off over the last 20+ years. I hope we will get an album of newly-recorded 2012 material in the next couple of years. OK I'm an ungrateful bastard, they've finally dropped a new album after 22 years & I'm already telling them to make another...but mbv just has a bit of an odds & sods feel to it to my ears.
I agree with this
I don't think it's a bad thing though. But I agree that is what it sounds like.
Had my first listen last night in bed on earphones
And agree with you - what struck me the most was that all the tracks either just stopped or faded out - there was none of the continuity of Loveless and none of the cohesion of Isn't Anything. I guess it does betray that the twenty years it has taken. It feels like a 'stop gap' album to me - almost like he didn't want to drop good material, but that it wasn't quite where he wanted to go next. Perhaps the mooted EP is where he really wants to go next (and the excitingly aggressive tail end - more MBV Arkestra really) is where he wants to go.
That said, Third Eye Foundation did junglist shoegaze nearly twenty years ago with Semtex.
FACT: The original title for Wonder 2
was Little Wonder 2
I'm really loving If I Am
Those wobbly guitar pulses throughout the song are bliss. A lot of really nice things going on in this song, easily one of my favourites.
@Antelope Where's m b v 'against' Isn't Anything & Loveless, in your opinion?
It's kind of hard to say at this point, but I definitely think it's a better album than Isn't Anything
I feel like Loveless works better as a more cohesive album, whereas mbv is less linear as you don't get that kind of melting transition. I guess it just has a lot more influences, having been made over such a long period of time, nothing wrong with that, pretty varied.
I think mbv is far better produced than Loveless, and I'm really glad Kevin decided to record in stereo. Still kinda confused as to why he recorded a lot of Loveless in mono, but I think he was going for a more "inner-head trip" kinda thing with that. There are some really incredible vocal moments in mbv that really benefit from stereo, especially with headphones. A lot more depth to mbv, it's a definite transition, and there are heaps of effects you wouldn't expect from them that work surprisingly well. I guess I think it's just a really really solid follow up to Loveless, and couldn't ask for more really. It's a rewarding album in that it only seems to get better with every listen, once you get your head around it.
You said further up you weren't all that impressed with it, how do you feel about it now after a few more listens?
Sounds better
m b v is the kind of album that requires quite many listens. I'm a bit surprised that m b v seems more quiet than Loveless. I expected to be more aggressive.
Same here!
It's nice though, I think Kevin was going for a bigger dynamic range then just flatout loudness, and unless it's just me, the last 3 tracks do seem a lot louder than stuff previously, which is a nice buildup.
And as I said before, I miss a song like Soon
Soon is my favorite MBV song by far.
Fun MBV slight in here:
http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/arts-entertainment/6-music-regrets-trying-to-be-good-2013020458456
Another DJ, Mary Anne Hobbs, believes the closure came at just the right time: “This weekend I’d have had to gush enthusiastically about the new My Bloody Valentine album, which is as pleasing to the ear as a washing machine spinning a brick.
WAIT. THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED?
I'D BETTER WAKE FROM MY DEATHLESS SLUMBERS AND GET THE ELDER GODS THEN I SUPPOSE.
Couple of listens now.
It's good, but I wonder if I'll keep coming back to it. Thing is that I've got other bands scratching my MBV itches now- Tamaryn doing the ethereal shoegaze, The KVB doing the loud distorted noise and The History of Apple Pie doing the sweet harmonies. It's kinda arrived at the wrong time for me.
who is thisMBV-itch-scratching KBV of which you speak?
...
I think I can safely add this to the 2012 stuff I can't believe I missed.
Jack Walker once said:
"Why do you want to sign Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?" to Kenny Dalglish.
I know you didn't totally mean it this way but that's what I thought of in relation to a "I don't need MBV, I've got The History of Apple Pie!" type comments.
Does anyone else think the start of New You
sounds like Lotus by R.E.M.?
yeah must be just me haha
Is it just me, or is it mixed pretty quiet?
Have had to crank my amp right up to get any decent volume...
yeah, it's terrible
haven't heard an album this meant-to-beloud-but-actually-really-quiet since The Cure's Wish.
Only listened on my iPod plugged into my amp so far,
But if this means I can't crank it up LOUD with headphones I'm gonna be mighty annoyed...
I've listened to it on headphones now.
Couldn't fucking hear it over the traffic. Am gonna have to boost the volume in iTunes which will no doubt reduce the quality: KEVIN SHIELDS I HOPE YOU'RE LISTENING.
i'm rewatching Twin Peaks
and is this and yes sounds like it could be from the scenes in the roadhouse with the blonde woman singing
is this and yes
is pure Twin Peaks / Badalamenti goodness
I have to revise my opinion of Wonder 2
Had it on the headphones at high volume this morning & I emerged the other end feeling like someone had slipped something in my PG Tips. It's going to be an absolute monster if they play it live.
surprised...
...by how accessible m b v is. was expecting it to be decidedly troublesome in that respect. but its not. a few listens in and i'm liking it.
So the CD has arrived...
Glossy. Minimal. Nice.
he clearly didn't spend long on the liner notes...
Great to have it in my hands though!
Verdict: the album is great
It just took some time to appreciate it.
Yeah. Mine arrived too. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of the
album and so am feeling indifferent to it. I just hope their Hammersmith gig is better than their Brixton one.
feels good to own it as a physical album
makes me more excited to be seeing them in two weeks (though I didn't realise they'd released a date in Birmingham after I'd already compromised to see em in Manchester, which is a bit of a bummer - as that date would also make me seem like less of a terrible, terrible son).
Minor gripe though, I still get to see MBV. MBV!
It has been a while now
and I can safely say that this was a brilliant follow-up to Loveless.
Obviously couldn't have expected anything to live up to that, but it's still an amazing album in it's own right.
I think it's been especially good
in that it's a solid release that's shown that, instead of being this almost-mythical recluse painstakingly crafting otherworldly masterworks, MBV is just a really, really talented band capable of making really, really good music.
Which is just a really, really good thing, rilly.
There are a lot of albums I can happily stop listening to half way through.
But not this one. It demands to be heard from start to end and really is a fine follow up to Loveless. Well done Kevin.
I'd agree with this
but I'd be a hypocrite because I did stop half way through because I found out there were some really good Simpsons episodes coming on.
They were really good, though. From the early nineties and everything.
On the second part of Only Tomorrow...
...there's a great melody hidden under that guitar noise. It reminds me of a song, but I can't remember what song.
Does anybody know if they fixed the transcode issue?
I went for the 320kbps download originally, but someone said it was just a 128kbps transcode masquerading as 320... and then I remember someone saying that they'd fixed it? Is that true?
If they haven't fixed it then I'll just upload my CD copy and deal with 256kbps VBR
Yeah I emailed about it, they never admitted it but said I should re download it so I did, I only checked one file with audacity but it seemed right
Hmm hopefully they have fixed it then
This was actually the catalyst for me to try and learn a little bit about sound file technology, realised I could have been uploading my CDs to iTunes at 320kbps VBR all this time!
Have now uploaded mbv from the CD at 320kbps VBR just so I know it's not a transcode. Apple lossless is tempting, but I'll start using up way too much disk space...
This album is dreadful
