Excuses I've made for downloading music illegally
1) I've bought it on vinyl (okay)
2) I've lost the cd (okay)
3) Someone taped it for me years ago so really that's when I stole it so it's okay to steal it again now (definitely not okay.)
4) I bought the last Burial ep on vinyl and paid downloaded so Hyperdub owe me one illegal download (probably not okay.)
5) I want to listen to a classic album on the way to work which I probably won't like enough to buy and the artist doesn't need my money anyway (Think I can get away with that one.)
These are moral okays. Obviously they all count as being illegal.
Your turn please.

6) It's a reissue with bonus tracks but you already own the album
7) The artist in question is now dead
It's a good one
If the artist doesn't make any money (because of death), what's the point of buying his music? To make the label happy?
or so the label has more money to fund artists who aren't dead?
?????????????
Makes more sense to illegally download the dead artist's music
then use the savings to buy something by living musicians from the same label.
Is it morally acceptable to steal stuff from a dead person?
If my neighbour dies can I go in and help myself?
Great logic
So, that dead person is making CDs and vinyls in heaven (or hell, depending on preference)?
Otherwise how could we steal stuff from dead artists?
;)
It's what they would have wanted.
8) It's out of print
9) It would have been out of copyright if new laws hadn't been bought by media companies
10) Downloading it is easier than ripping it
Especially true of a bunch of discs from the early 00s which broke the CD standard to prevent people ripping them
11) The artist has spoken out in favour of file sharing
Dunno about this one, what about all the other people involved in the process?
(11) It's not as bad a rape.
'as' /\/\/\
That sound a bit patois.
yeah, that was definitely the worst thing about your post
...
12) You're going to buy the album later, anyway, when you have the money
13) You've never heard the artist before, and you want to see if you like them first.
I've done 12)
Don't think it's a problem.
I've used 13) loads of times
and ended up buying whole discographies of the band in question. Probably harder to justify downloads for that reason now though, in the age of Spotify/Soundcloud etc...
It makes me feel like a big man
14) Because, no matter what I do, or who's copy I try,
Laser Guided Melodies will not play ball and add to my iTunes.
15
it's not on amazon or discogs and i cant be arsed looking anywhere else
...except for dodgy Russian websites.
16) it's a special regional release of an album I own w/ new songs
Hi Japan-exclusive bonus tracks.
17) I like the artist's music
but the artist themself is a complete c**t and I don't want to give them my money
or in the weird case of Kiss
I _don't_ like the artists music and the artist is a complete c-unit
Excellent insult/euphemism
Like a more gangster 'see you next Tuesday'.
We got action where you don't
Show up places where you won't
C-Unit, C-C-C-C, C-Unit
see most dancehall, selected Norwegian black metal
Don't need any excuses for downloading music
because there's nothing morally wrong with it to begin with.
is it morally wrong to argue about the morality of downloading again?
kinda feels like it
18) I am too tight to pay for music
mp3s are worth anything (okay)
AREN'T*
19) If I actually paid for all the music I wanted
there's no way I'd be able to afford it all, and it's better than not listening at all
because i like money
I've used 99% of these excuses in my head in the past
and recently I've tried OH SO HARD to stream stuff first then when I can afford it, pay for the MP3 version of the album/or the vinyl (trying to quit buying CDs).
The stupidest thing about this is... I've chosen to do this at the most financially tight period of my life I've known yet. So I still end up bottling it and pirating the album before I get my next pay (which is fuck all).
2012 was the first year I ever really paid for downloads as opposed to CDs. Didn't mind doing it as much as I expected, especially if it's a good, struggling indie artist.
MBV's website was down
20) I'm not sure if I like them anyway, but OF COURSE I would by their albums if I was sure I did....
If I'm unable to listen to every NBT
my opinions would be less informed, thus depriving DiS friends of top-notch forum posts.
So, it's actually yr guys's fault.
musicans dont deserve any of the income they may potentially make from my purchase
because music isn't a real job anyway
BECAUSE $16 MAY BE WORTH IT, BUT $16 IS MORE THAN I HAVE FOR A DOWNLOAD, KEVIN
The only one I ever really use is
I can barely afford food, I can't even afford prescription antidepressants. And I like music too much to not bother.
I use a variant of this
In that I'm feeding 5 mouths on one income and have to think carefully about every recreational purchase I make. If there's a free option I'm going to take it.
...
How about the musicians who are feeding 5 mouths and rely on the money?
It's as much a 'free option' as walking into the supermarket, loading up a trolley and wheeling it out of the door without paying is.
It's as much a free option as walking into the supermarket, loading up a trolley of stuff you've made identical copies of, and wheeling it out of the door without paying is*
fixed.
(The musicians could seek out a more consistent source of income if that's an issue for them).
WLWC beat me to it
But you seem to be making a confused analogy with stealing a CD from a shop.
Plus I always do my research
and try to illegally download from single artists/DINKs. If I knew an artist has a stay-at-home significant other and 3 kids I wouldn't do it. Exept for Elton John, he's got enough moola. And Paul McCartney, his kids are grown up now and doing alright for themselves. Shame I've never had the inclination to rob that pair of royalties.
21) Have spent countless years
over paying for vastly more music than the average consumer and maybe feel your due the odd one back.
22) I'm such a bad, bad man
23) I want to
24) It's not released for ages but it's leaked already and everyone else is saying how great it is and I just can't wait any longer!
This is not ok, but I still occasionally do it because I am a bad person with no patience
25) I haven't forgiven the music industry for charging me £16 for the CD of Screamadelica when I was 17
Forgive them because that album is actually great
It is great
But SIXTEEN POUNDS? This was between Vanishing Point and XTRMNTR, so it wasn't new or even an import - it was HMV overcharging.
But then what happens? Twelve years later, boom, bankruptcy. Karma, bitch.
25ii) I don't see any reason for the music industry's continued existence
26) it annoys people on DiS
27) I bought 320kbps mp3's from the band's official website only to find that they're not actually 'true' 320kbps
Who could I possibly be thinking of...
dunno.
grass 'em up though.
27)
I don't value music enough to put my hand in my pocket and pay a small amount for it.
Personally, I don't think there is an excuse for it. Happy to pay musicians I love to make music I love.
What about musicians you don't love?
(28) it's easier than trying to find the CD (that I already own).
Did this for the 1st time the other day
Still feel ashamed.
29 - it reminds me of a simpler time of Napster and Soulseek
Audiogalaxy

30) I've been to their shows and bought their merch countless times, so I'm sure they won't be too bothered
31) I used to be in the band and am curious about the new album
but am I fuck going to give them a penny of my cash.
James Iha?
32) brightonb told me to
33) I'm morally bankrupt
34) It's big
35) It's clever
36) I'll go see them live at some point
They probably make more money from touring
Not sure
36) I live in Southeast Asia
where it is impossible to buy the original CDs of music I like and where mail order is ill-advised given the inefficiency and corruption of the postal services.
So much THIS...
I live in India where you mostly only find Britneys, Boney Ms and Enrique Martins. The postal service is unreliable (though it has improved), very few sites accept Indian Debit Cards and I don't have credit cards...
(37) "I get sexually aroused at the thought of being so naughty."
(38) "Property is theft, man."
(39) "Your mum!" (an adequate response to criticism, I think).
(40) Because downloading music illegally resets the gauge of which music is actually worth $$$
Thus providing us with a better musical catalogue to choose to listen to... since the people who are still in the game by the end of all this will be the ones that really really want to and not just to make a dollar
