Favourite record stores worldwide
Mildly inspired by this slightly vanilla-y list.

Mine, I think...
1) Souffle Continu, Paris - I think my love for this is based on the owners as much as anything. But it is a great store, has such a great CD collection of all kinds of oddities. My go to place for anything worthwhile, along with a chat about whatever's new. Such a shame they're shifting to vinyl. http://www.soufflecontinu.com/index.php?f=accueil
2) Sounds of the Universe, London - Only recently rediscovered it. Absolute treasure trove. I love the labels on all the albums though, and the downstairs bit full of coffee-table books and weird 2nd hand jazz.
3) Bimbo Tower, Paris - In terms of eclecticism, can't be beat and if you know your jap rock I suspect it's heaven. I love it but rarely go there these days. Great world music type section and I have never seen anyone shop stock so much Muslimgauze. However, find it a bit too cluttered to find everything and they don't turn the stock over enough to make it worthy of repeat visits.
NOW YOU.

<<Such a shame they're shifting to vinyl.>>
????????
I don't have a vinyl player nor the storage space for vinyl in my apartment
And I love CDs.
100 replies re: "vinyl player"
*"vinyls player"
Thinking of starting to buy CDs

:(
I have no idea why I didn't write turntable.
:D
Bleeker, NYC
Banquet, Kingston
Norman, Leeds
Twist & Shout, Denver Colorado
and the stellar Tattered Cover bookstore next door to it :)
Amoeba on Sunset...
...is hard to beat.
everytime i visit Bleecker Bobs in NYC i walk out with some bootleg or two. its like shopping in Carnaby St. aged 15.
Came into this thread to post Amoeba
only been to LA once, but going through all the $1 bargain stuff and finding things like the Locust while they had the Melvins playing an in-store gig was pretty much perfect.
Plus they did some kinda staff picks leaflet thing which was filled with some awesome choices.
Any Berlin ones?
I'm going there in two weeks,
In the list in the op?
Yes...
Yup, Spacehall is in the list, and it's truly fantastic.
I wrote a bit about Gelbe Musik in Berlin a while ago...

Great if you're into avant-garde stuff.
Bimbo Tower seconded
Second Layer RIP ;__;
Cavern Records in Aberdeen
I'm not even from Aberdeen but whenever I'm up there I always make a visit, it's just a basement bursting with Vinyl. Guy who works there is really nice too.

Generation Records, New York
Rough Trade West, London
And one in Sane Diego whose name I can't remember.
I think I've got a list somewhere of ones I keep meaning to check out now I'm in London
I think Sounds of the Universe is on it.
Generally I just go to two of the Music & Video Exchanges in Notting Hill (the soul/funk/hiphop one and the classical one). There's a good soul one right next to where I work in Putney, but it's proper pricey so I don't really bother. Before I moved down, I used to visit Berwick street occasionally if I was in town, but Sister Ray's just a bit shit really and the others seem to have gone. Been to Rough Trade once, it's utter wank.
The classical room downstairs in HMV Oxford Street is/was really good (and the same goes to a lesser extent for the jazz room).
I grew up in Nottingham when Selectadisc was around though, so nothing's ever gonna match up.
As much as I loved the Notts Selecta
...errr, Amoeba
some great ones i remember stumbling across in Barca
I think it was called Revolver? Just off La Rambla, lots of crates to dig through. quite a few good second spots all of Spain, I remember one in Madrid (near that big big street market) that was particularly brilliant, no idea of name
here in Melbourne we are really spoilt with some real gems of record stores (Greville, Round & Round, Woolly Bully, Missing Link, Muscle Shoals to name a few)
might be...
..an obvious one, but i recall Gaslight Records in Melbourne being a good spot. saw Augie March play a show in there once. of course the sound was fucked but everyone appreciated the effort.
White Noise Records in Hong Kong
obviously
www.whitenoiserecords.org
.
Out of curiosity - what made you pick white noise records?
OBVIOUSLY!
Another vote for Sounds of the Universe
Love the weird stuff you can get in there. Last time I was in there I bought a cd of Haitian street music just because I could.
2nd Avenue Records - Portland, OR - USA
I love record stores where digging is a fun and amazing journey. I don't like any record store that's got everything arranged appropriately and overpriced. WAnt to look through a crazy mess that's only loosely arrange appropriately. There's also a fantastic one in my hometown (Philadelphia) that's actually fairly new and is perfect for spending a day lazing about digging through the crates of awesome stuff.
Borderline Records & Tapes in Fishtown, Girard Ave (Again, Philadelphia)
Volcanic Tongue Glasgow
they relocated the shop to The Hidden Lane. Not been yet but simply no place like this shop for experimental, underground, weirdo stuff you have never heard of but looks awesome.
Old place was strange
Like wandering into someone's house. Only went once, had to rush there before catching a train back to London. Once inside found an office/room with a bunch of IT-like guys, who said VT'd usually be open by then. Turned out they'd broken down whilst driving there, so I left empty-handed.
All Ages
Camden
Andys Records, Mansfield.
Sonic Boom in Toronto
it's like a dream record shop from a film. I wanted to live there.
