DiStape Club - February edition
Suggestions for themes please! I'll start sending addresses out when February rolls around.
If you haven't gotten your Names/Space/Nature tapes then PM me and we'll try and sort something out. Don't assume that I'll see that you haven't gotten one if you just post in one of the threads because I don't read every post and even if I see it I'll probably forget if there isn't a message lying around.
- Relevant artist taggings:
- None
-
Just having no US/UK songs as the theme is far too broad though
maybe pick a country/area and make a mixtape of music from there? Is that what you meant by Countries? I reckon that'd be pretty good. Shotgun Japan!
very_small_monk this'd this -
No suggestions here, but if you do go with the non-US/UK theme (and I'm not saying you should)
just remember to be clear that it's also non-Canada/Ireland as well, what with them basically being suburbs of the first two countries. I don't want a mix that's just full of Neil Young and Thin Lizzy. Or, actually, I do. But not for this theme.
-
I think I'm going to make the executive decision to go with 'pick a country or area that isn't Great Britain or North America and make a mixtape comprised of songs by artists from said region' as the theme
Catchy! We aren't starting for a bit anyhow so if anyone has any better suggestions that can always be changed, I just want to make a mixtape at the moment.
-
You can just go ahead and make me a mixtape if you wanna make one so bad
I still haven't received a nature one, but then I still haven't sent mine either so whatever, it's only the 27th.
-
sorry i haven't sent out nature yet, but it's okay because it's still january.
keith i finally got round to listening to your nature cd today. it was interesting. totally dark in some places but then that seemed to be coated with some nice little mellow relaxing tunes. very much enjoyed, would listen again. :D
-
Oh, but don't put Walking on the Moon on it plz
In all honesty, I've got a loada music to listen to at the moment, and mixes coming monthly is more than enough, so it probably wouldn't be hard to find someone who'll be more appreciative than me (and who might actually give you some feedback). But idk, if you want to.
-
Have you got two "names" mixes now that TBO's back?
I bet you two were in cahoots to get extra stuff.
-
I just grassed you up to Big Brainfeedr
Sorry.
I tried not to go all pastoral and wussy with it, but realised that Nature in my record collection is pretty much Wolves In The Throne Room or Espers. Neither of these made it on, obviously, because the camping theme was way better!
-
As much as I like the non-UK/US idea
Can we run with a theme that's open to interpretation?
It'd put me off playing if we start adding loads of little sub-clauses and extra rules.
Food? (Because music could be the food of love...)
Film connections?
Money? (bitches love dollar bills, yo)
Or, to pre-emptively strike the Love mix, what about a 'Songs About Fucking' theme?Jordan_229_2 and andyvine this'd this -
was it TBO that had me for the names one then?
no ive never received my original NAMES mix. It's okay though because you made up for it.
-
Something a bit easier than Nature please!
Nature is so broad I've struggled due to a massive shortlist of tracks! (however, it'll be on its way soon Puds)
Ideas: Remixes, Metal, Side Projects/Soloists from bands, Shapes, Sweary, Body Parts, Hair...
-
Pale-eyedBadger this'd this
-
to repost some i said earlier
monsters and myth, warfare, science (non space), covers, remixes, body parts, dates/numbers, colours, history, geography/locations, inanimate objects, birth/death, darkness/light, food & drink, non english song names, 7 sins and 7 virtues, travel, the teenage years, drugs and drink, heaven/hell(religion), boy/girl, love/hate, numbers, animals, elements.
-
I like monsters & myth
could do that with a 'bonus points for no US/UK songs' caveat. obviously the points aren't redeemable anywhere though.
-
I am posting Space and Nature TODAY.
Sorry for my lateness, I have been shit and hardly online for ages because REAL LIFE has been a bit too REAL. But I'm here now and these are being posted today so I'm back in the loop. Sorry to those who've been waiting for CDs but I promise they are good. Sorry sorry sorry x
-
I am stoked for February! Let me in
Actually, I haven't sent my January mix yet, I'm waiting for payday, I didn't even have a dollar for the post. But the disc is made and artwork made, I will just drop it in the mail on Wednesday when my account fills up with lootcakes!!!
I thought Nature was super fun. What about a theme that is open to interpretation like something weird...
"Baking Cookies on a Winter's Day Songs" I don't know "Riding a Bicycle In the Rain" I don't know
-
Can everyone that wants to take part please PM me or reply under this post?
I have your addresses if you've done it before I just want to know who wants to do it this month & maybe that'll avoid so many people not getting mixes.
-
Nature mix will be sent tomorrow
Count me in for February please!
-
andyvINe
Going to finish off Nature tonight hopefully
-
Sorry...
I read the OP and got all proactive, and then read further down and realised you'd already apologised.
I retracted my grass a few minutes later and have learned my lesson about being a dirty grass in future.
-
OH SHIT HOW ABOUT THIS
Use song titles to make a short story!
brainfeedr this'd this -
That could be your short story though
Or it could be a poem. Quite open to interpretation, but essentially stringing your song titles into something coherent. I like that it'll remove the element of being able to type words into your iTunes search and bring more imagination into it. People could post them up when they're done too.
-
Nice!
Like it
-
like it.
I'm in by the way.
-
I'm in for Feb
And I like the idea of the non UK-USA mix. But whatever.
My ratio is Sent 3 - Received 1. As the Big Man didn't say "2 out 3 is bad".
(Thanks again Dusty Nothing - I have listened to your Space disc lots and I do have some aspirations to send you some more detailed feedback at some point).
-
I'm in.
I'm up for sending a love mix to a complete stranger. Any excuse to put The Frogs on a mix.
-
Yeah I like it too
so I'm just going to not include any US/UK songs on mine - I guess it doesn't need to be a 'rule'.
-
If going for the non UK-USA theme
a rule could be no more than 1 song from any country. Which should guarantee a good mixed bag of stuff. Mixed bags are good.
Pale-eyedBadger this'd this -
I dunno, I thought you said it was.
Maybe it wasn't.
-
i don't know any well known songs
+ 32 indie points
-
Count me in again
enjoying this. Sent 2 received 2. 100%. Nature to go in next coupla days.
-
school
count me in, and hows school for a theme?
-
H-SteIN
Nature was a tough one due to its broadness. Up for the next challenge though.
Nature mix off to Puds this week.
-
Fuck the haters!
This month's theme is WORLD MUSIC - feel free to pick one country and songs from there or songs from all around the world, or extrapolate from the two words 'world' & 'music' and create basically whatever meaning you want.
-
Right.
This basically means I need to think of my own theme, doesn't it?
-
How's everyone doing with getting feedback
Of my Names and Space mixes I got none back. Don't get me wrong, I love doing mixes, but after spending hours putting them together it's nice to get some acknowledgement, even if just to say it's arrived.
Anyway, mclassh now I've finished my Nature mix I'll be giving yours a listen in the next day or two (and providing feedback).
Puds, my Nature mix will be in the post to you on Friday probably. Feedback welcome (but no pressure!)
-
Not really - it means pick songs that people would label 'world music'
i.e. not from western europe/north america. I put that last bit in to appease people that really don't want to do the above.
-
I mean obviously you can just do your own theme if you want
I really doubt anyone's going to mind!
-
JAMES L from Sheffield. Sorry the Nature one is currently being edited and decorated
should be with you by Monday hopefully. :D
-
World music
World music meaning we fill our mixes with rebetiko and tuvan throat music - or do we just mean non-UK-US music in general? It'll be easy to put together a decent mix but it wouldn't be truly reflective of the type of music I like or regularly listen to - unless I can fill it with Krautrock.
-
I just thought it'd be nice to take a break from themes that are easily filled with 'standard' stuff
and try to do something that might be more likely to result in mixes of artists/whole genres people have never heard of and try to open each others' minds a bit. That said, if you prefer making mixes that reflect stuff you listen to a lot then more power to you. I'm just looking forward to getting a CD of stuff I've more than likely never heard of precisely because my music taste is vastly prejudiced toward music from the US/western europe. We'll go back to a more open-ended theme next month!
-
IN your face for February,
Have posted the Nature mix to Basil in Sheffield, should be there tomorrow...
-
Can the current DiSTape thread be a sticky?
Might help prompt feedback if it's sat there at the top of the page. Especially if other people have the problems I do with the search function.
-
very_small_monk
yours will be in the post tomorrow. In theory everyone that signed up for this month should've had a PM with their recipient's address, if this isn't the case or you want to join in just PM me or sutin.
-
Nice one.
I look forward to receiving it
-
This came yesterday.
I like the cover but that's as far as I've got with it. I've been really busy but plan on making time to sit down and give it a good listen over the weekend. Japanese noise/rock sounds great. Who is on the postcard?
-
It's a picture of the White Witch
from the BBC series of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I wanted to send you something Japanesey but didn't have anything so just used one that was lying around.
-
thanks shucks
I am going to to my soundcloud challenge track first, then get to this mix afterwards, so it will be a couple of weeks before I get to it........whoever you are. I'll keep it a surprise.
-
brainfeedr
Had a couple of listens to your CD. I love it. The Boris, Shonen Knife and World's End Girlfriend tracks are incredible. I like how it's mixed together at the start, with the radio tuning. The bass on We Will Rock You is immense haha. Most of these artists are new to me but I'm definitely going to be checking out more stuff from them.
Thanks!
-
I'm glad you like it!
That We Will Rock You cover is so weird.
-
It is a bit isn't it.
When she started singing i thought ^^what the fuck is this?^^ but as the song went on and after listening it a few times it's grown on me a lot.
-
I posted mine on Saturday...
mclassh, keep your eyes open.
I've taken the artwork to another level this time.
-
thanks!
I apologise in advance to my recipients - really late with Nature and this one. I will send them together in a day or two.
-
tsk
this is not the level of commitment I was expecting from you
-
The artwork is phenominal / incomprehesible...
Cheers for the mix. A few things I know and love on there and a lot I don't know. Gonna have a fish-finger sandwich and stick it on.
keith this'd this -
committment
Really got a problem with that word ;-) . Need to try out the new theme too, in need of some inspiration.
Tells you everything that my nature tape is all based on 'natural disasters'! -
Spicer
I got round to posting yours today, I've been meaning to do it for a couple of days but kept forgetting
Spicer this'd this -
My wife explained the art to me - I truly am stupid.
Anyway, really enjoyed the mix, the whole thing but in particular the Fela Kuti song is awesome - I have a couple of his albums but that track's outstanding. Also loved the John Zorn track at the start - reminds me of a long time ago... Cheers!
-
That Fela Kuti track is one of my favourite songs ever.
Glad you approve!
-
I am being late with mine.
Going to try and get on it over the weekend. Next week I have to go away for work for three days, so that's all written off. If I don't do it this week it will be in 2 weeks. Sooorry!
I know what I'm doing though, just got to get it together.
-
you don't even know who you are
who I am talking to.
-
Huh wha? Just noticed that no one had posted for a while
I sent mine off a week or so ago....not heard back yet but that's ok.
-
I need to sort the artwork on mine. The disc is complete though.
Still not had a space mix or a nature one yet. :(
-
Will try and get mine out to you over the weekend
A change in jobs has resulted in a lot less free time but will try and get it done Sunday and out by the start of next week. I've got the shell of a playlist, just need to get it all in order!
-
I'm well into compiling
Probably going way off piste for what's expected of a "World Music" themed mix, but seeing as I've had absolutely no feedback about any of my 3 previous mixes I couldn't really give a shit if the recipient hates it! All I'll say is, -dan-, hope you like breakbeats...
-
I can confirm
that I do. Although I already own Dr. No's Ethiopium if that's where you're going ;)
-
Hey Dusty, I don't even know how it's the 21st already, Feb has been mental
I'm meant to be doing yours this month, but I've not had any time at all to look at it yet. Will try to pull something together this weekend - and I'll let you know if it's gonna be very late!
-
Alright, tracklist sorted.
Now just need to find some time to burn it /do "artwork". Maybe Monday.
-
Sorry man
In theory people should be more likely to send/give feedback because I started from scratch and people had to request to join. Seems weird that someone would ask to join and then not do it but who knows.
-
of course!
shall I send you my address?
-
Go for it
Although obv the person I'm *actually* meant to be sending it to this month takes priority...
-
thanks for your constructive criticism!
seriously though, any suggestions for what to do? might jack it in because it takes ages to send out all the addresses and stuff and barely anyone's bothering anymore it seems.
-
Yeah it is a shame....
It appears that not many people can be bothered. I find it surprising that someone would sign themselves up for it and the go on to make no effort to actually, you know, DO it? Thanks for giving it a go and trying to make it work.....who knows perhaps mixes will now start raining from the sky.
-
i've received tapes for every month so far
except for this one. but they always came in the last week of the month or the first week of the next so i wouldn't give up hope yet. these things take a fair bit of time and effort (certainly the ones i've received felt like they had anyway).
sending mine out to h-stein tomorrow.
-
You will get it.
Its just going to be late I'm afraid. I want to make you an Italo Disco mix so I've listened to a lot on your behalf but not actually either a) brought any or b) even thought about a playlist. I really want to do it though.
If that sounds good and your happy to wait then I'll proceed. If not then I can probably knock together some random stuff that happens to fall outside the UK/USA.
No Nature or World Music mix for me either. :-(
-
i would absolutely adore an italo disco mix!
so please take your time :)
(ps - i'm happy to mediafire people previous mixes if they never got any if it keeps people somewhat motivated to keep contributing to this. just spent the last four hours forgetting to eat getting super into this one and i'd rather like to keep doing that once a month plz)
brainfeedr and nicknackno this'd this -
Lightcyclerider!
Your World music mix will be in the post tomorrow, apologies for the delay, I've been lazy/busy this week.
-
Super.
I'll look forward to it.
-
Timberford - your WORLD disc will be on its way tomorrow
This will be the 4th disc I've sent and so far I've only received one (the space mix). And looking at the comments of others in the thread it looks like I'm not the only one who is doing more giving than receiving. I wonder whether it might be an idea to pair up multiple people rather than just one? I would be happy sending out 5 or 6 disc discs a month if I were likely to get 4 or so back - the bulk of my time is spent putting the track-listing together, so the extra marginal effort of burning extra discs and sticking a stamp on an envelope is minor. As the mix club has been going for a few months now the multiple CD swap could just be open to those who have a track record of sending discs (new members could still be matched up with one user a month until they get a track record).
-
Here's some thoughts for next months mix:
- tracks that are less than 2 minutes long
- songs with swearing in
- cover versions -
Oh, and if anyone fancies swapping a nature disc
drop me a note
-
get everyone's email addresses and mail merge them
I can imagine how tedious it must be copy and pasting into a load of DiS Notes. Will make it easier to cross people off an Excel list if they are two months without sending. Just database it, will make your life a whole lot easier.
Good work so far. It's disappointing how many people have signed up then disappeared. also, very weird. We're only three months in, not like it's become a huge burden.
there;s no shame in admitting defeat guyz - if you had good intentions but can;t manage it, jus say so.
I am missing a Space mix, but I've got Names and Nature. Made a start to my World mix, but it's going to be at least a week before I finish it, so one of you will be kept waiting. Soz.
-
I have no idea what this mail merging thing is
but I'll look it up!
-
Maybe not 5 or 6, but how about
a system as it is now, but when you receive your space mix (for example) you send the space mix you made to that person in return. So essentially, you send to a random person (as now) and also a copy to the person who sent you a mix as a thank you.
That way you'll probably be rewarded with at least one mix a month for your efforts.
-
The main problem I'd have with 5 or 6 a month
isn't burning off and sending more copies of mine, but finding time to properly listen to and reply to all those received.
-
Cheers
Look forward to receiving it.
3 sent and 3 received so far for me. The 4th will be sent next week I expect. The only disappointing thing is no one's told me yet what they thought of my music tastes / mixing skills.
-
My problem with that would be having enough money to buy the CDs and pay postage
but if anyone wants to send more than one, let me know and I'll hook you up with more addresses.
-
Basil sent me a rather spiffy mix a couple of weeks ago (how organised can you get...) :P
I have been slloowweerr. But I've finished it and will burn and stick it in the post tomorrow.
Watch your doormat, hanshotfirst.
-
No problem at all Dan
I'll only be able to finish mine off this weekend/early next week so I'm in the same position. Thanks for letting me know!
-
Sorry about the lateness
My mix is on it's way to you today. I apologise now for the rushed artwork!
-
basil!
Sorry for the delay, *Real Life* is blowing at the mo
Will tweak and polish the mix this weekend. It will be posted next week.
Thanks to Sidrrrs for the *Some Music from Korea* mix and the Techno Party bonus disc. just catching up with it now
-
Woohoo i got a mix!
Thanks dusty_nothing. not listened to it yet but very much looking forward to it judging by the few tracks i know.....artwork is better than anything i've managed to come up with.
Dusty_Nothing this'd this -
apologising profusely
I've got it, it's lovely. I was really touched by the hand made cover. It's brilliant.
I've been busy, but I know just a little post to say thanks is not too much to ask, so once again really sorry.
I'll send you a note with more feedback laterz. :)nicknackno this'd this -
Chris Nicol
If you're wondering where your February World Music mix is - it's in the post, on it's way to you. Sorry for the delay with that. Hope you enjoy.
-
Japan mix arrived
Thanks veridisjoe. It was a pleasant surprise to open it up to find a CD dedicated to Japanese music! I should get a chance to listen to it in the next few days and let you know what I think.
-
Listened to it a few times now, very enjoyable...
I loved Adjagas and the Cracow Klemzer band and will search out more of their stuff, aswell as Ferns and Kocani Orkestar....where did you find this shit?! Shugo Tokumaru is someone i've been meaning to hear so that was a very pleasant reminder (i do like a bit of todd rungdenesque japanese pop). Oh and you reminded me how much I love Juana Molina's albums.....cheers!
Dusty_Nothing this'd this -
You're welcome
Most are through recommendations of similar artists. My love for the first Beirut album opened me up to a lot . My Uncle is also a big world music fan and when I went inter-railing a few years back he gave me a big list of records to try and bring back with Cracow Klemzer band being an example. Have no idea where I picked up the Ferns album from! Glad you enjoyed it.
-
Received gratefully, thank you!
Very impressed with the design effort. I'm giving it a listen now. More thoughts to follow soon. Really sorry for the delay getting mine out: should be in the post tomorrow though.
-
my pleasure!
late night listening is the right time for that - preferably under a desert sky with an open fire. Hope you enjoyed it all. Not sure why I twisted it in such a different direction at the end, but it felt like it needed an ice bath after the sauna.
Looking forward to receiving yours. Glad we are both as slow as each other!
-
-dan-
I've not forgotten you. The "world" mix is finished and will be sent next week. I think you'll realise when you receive it why it's taken so long due to its epicness. Good job you're sitting out this month as it'll take a while to get through mine!
-
Given it a good few listens now
and absolutely love it. Way more than the 40-50% you predicted so would have love to have heard more. Favourites are Chrissy Zembo Tembo, Koes Plus - amazing!, Elisa - wasn't sure at first but love the chorus, Hasna el Becharia, Rise and Fall of a Decade - really beautiful, and E.M.A.K. Hardly any I disliked. Brilliant stuff so thanks again!
-
Coja!
received your World Mix yesterday. Great stuff - the whole family approves and that is high praise indeed. Yesterday we dined Afrobeat style, which Syd seemed to think was an excuse to use his hands to eat mince with and Hana used the beat to shuffle around on the table to. High times.
The South American stuff is excellent, the Latin embellishments go over the groove really well.
The run-time is perfect, I appreciate a well considered restrained mix, and you;re right, it does encourage replays of the whole thing. I don't like a hard-drive dump masquerading as a compilation.
Love the cover too, the little drowning goat is a great touch.
I have not been able to place the samples you mentioned, but it is a good game that will keep me going a long time I expect.
Thanks for this, will continue to enjoy it for a while.
Hope you liked your Sands mix.

From what you said in the January thread
I'd say no to LOVE far to sappy. Science is a bit to close to Space for my liking.
I like the no US/UK idea sounds like a good challenge or maybe open it up to Countries or Geography
???
