Just the usual stuff I reckon. One of those weeks where I just collapsed into my room every afternoon feeling really angsty for some reason and blasted Joyce Manor out. Probably on my period or something.
Also: stumbled upon that John Doran review of the L. Pierre album which made me listen to it. Had no real interest in listening to an instrumental Aidan Moffat record but it is wonderful. Great The Caretaker vibes all round.
1. I can't imagine myself listening to this album much in the future, like it isn't a keeper, but a lot of the songs are great fun.
3. Unlike his last couple of EPs which were great for a couple of plays but quickly lost their impact this album seems to have staying power, it was especially good for depressing walks in the snow.
4. Been listening to WIXIW on CD a bit too, I'm coming round to it - it still doesn't sound like a Liars album though. I think it's because they used to be quite heavily focused on percussion and this album has a totally different vibe.
5. One of the best meshings of pop and 'math-rock' I've heard since Maps & Atlases first couple of EPs. Should probably get round to listening to The Books someday soon.
5b. Their second album remains unbelievably good - I don't understand how they aren't more popular.
8b. Very tenuously related but I got Louis CK tickets :D
on the first few listens but now there's nothing that holds my attention. I still think the EPs are good, I just don't listen to them. Same goes for a lot of stuff on Modern Love (Demdike Stare especially), I listen to it and think 'this is cool and I respect it but I kind of want to listen to something else', don't know exactly why. Luxury Problems hasn't been like that so far though - the breakbeat outro to Up the Box is corny as hell but still gets me every time.
Scrobbler still broke. Can't be arsed to fanny around fixing it. Here's what I've been listening to this week.
Fire! Orchestra - Exit!
Local record shop posted that they'd got it in on twitter so I positively raced to pick it up. Very good, like a modern version of Art Ensemble. The second side has some jarring vocal moments though. Big righteous free jazz which grooves. Definitely lives up to the hype.
Mats Gustafsson & Colin Stetson - Stones
Second Rune Grammofon release of the week. This one is a bit disappointing. They both fart away nicely enough but there's a lack of difference in tone which means it sounds a bit boring. None of the cool percussive sounds Stetson usually wrenches out either. Maybe I'll come round to it though.
Moon Duo - Mazes
This is a little gem of a record. Like a lighter and more digestible Wooden Shjips. Really fun, sounds really nice and grooves along nicely. I'd call it an edible slab of pysche-pop if I didn't hate that term.
Cult of Luna - Vertikal
If you like Isis you'll like this. It's good, but yet to completely blow me away. Love the nods to 2001 though.
Jontti - Twirligig
Picked this up for three euros because it was on Stone's Throw. Psychedelic beat tape with some occasionally obnoxious AnCo style vocals. It's nice enough but a bit too light and airy for me. Probably won't listen to it again.
Kevin Drumm - Relief
Harsh medicine. This one doesn't have Russell Haswell providing 'spectral engineering' so it's probably not as good as Crowded, the other record he released last year. I'm just speculating on that as I haven't heard Crowded. Melds his drone side with his harsh side pretty well though.
Harvey Milk - Life... The Best Game In Town
Still one of my favourite records of the last ten odd years. Better than anything else they've ever done by quite a way. It's sad, funny, ironic and above all it really rocks. The production is so good, perfect match between fuzz and low end gnarl. And the lyrics and their delivery are perfect

9 - A few listens of the new album which I happened to love. Tread carefully if you're not a fan of synth pop though.
I found the last three to be a lot more emotive too. To me, this new one feels a bit soulless in comparison. Lots of fans seem to really enjoy it though!

Bit of a coincidence that Bill, Donny & Bobby have all popped up in this week's chart as I didn't notice being particularly in that kind of mood or anything, but they were all up there the greatest "album artists" of the 70s (let alone "soul album artists") so I guess it's just one of those things.
DJ Food's Kaleidoscope is one of those 10/10 classics nobody ever mentions on here. Must've been maybe a year or more since I listened to it, until today. Rob Smith's "Up on the Downs" is kinda similar, if only a 8 or 9/10, though I probably still listen to it more often.
Kinny's Can't Kill A Dame With Soul is still my most-played album of 2012 by a long way.
Cowen's 6th symphony's really good - according to my itunes I'd listened to it once before but I didn't really remember it, but I've played it a couple of times this week so I guess time-wise it's up there with Bill really.

Broadcast have got so many plays because I got the 'Berberian Sound Studio' OST this week. 39 tracks in 37 minutes, and is a good album that - like their Focus Group collab - demands attention and repeat listens (though isn't quite as rich -- largely due to being a soundtrack, I guess).

8 plays for the two joint 8th place artists? Unseen University would be freaking right out about that.
Disagree w/ the Berberian Sound Studio OST comments. Listened to it a few times but I'm not sure there is much depth to it at all - some girl screaming, some sinister sounding keyboards, some foley sounds and then it's over.
Works well in the film, though.

I really can't get into Luxury Problems
I loved the sound he had on those EPs; the bass was like the sound of distant explosions, never heard anything else like it. He is great live as well.
Yeah I was blown away by the bass and the general tone of them

Is it radically different?
Have only heard the new album as a promo sent me it thinking it'd be up my street.

I suppose it's not *radically* different, but I think the songwriting is a bit lacking in comparison to the last three efforts.
