I just don't think he has the mental strength to patch things up with his old bands.
The tragic irony is, people are far more prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt every time he puts his foot in it with the press (compare the furore over the skinhead/Union Jack stage thing in the early 90s to the "it was just.. a thing.." reaction over his anti-immigration comments... and far worse, his flippant remarks about the Norway massacre.) But he just digs himself deeper into a hole every time, as if he thrives off being hated.
I don't get that man at all - he's the archetypal outsider's icon, but he craves attention more than Madonna in 1985.
I suppose partly because the version of the band people would want to reform never actually played live in the first place... still *daydreams*
I actually think Talk Talk are less likely to reform than the Smiths, given that hypothetically if Morrissey did patch up his differences with the rhythm section (big if, but still) then he might be up for it.
As I understand it, Mark Hollis chose to retire from music to concentrate on being a parent - presumably his kids must be pretty much grown up by now. Also, despite being 'retired' he does very occasionaly pop his head up above the ramparts...
2. Talk Talk only really existed as a 'real' band up to The Colour of Spring, and then it became basically a studio improv thing based around Hollis and a bunch of session musicians. So they've never played anything live off Spirit of Eden or Laughing Stock, and I think Hollis has suggested that in fact the way the songs were edited together means they'd be impossible to play live 'properly'.
3. Obviously he could reform the Colour of Spring gang and maybe manage to get some versions of the later stuff into their set, but that seems a bit weird. Or he could form a new band of sessions musicans called 'Talk Talk' to try and play the late material, but that doesn't seem like his style, especially as he dropped the Talk Talk name for his last record. If he could be tempted to play live I'd imagine it;d be more like 'Mark Hollis and friends play Spirit of Eden' or somesuch.
God that's a tedious post, but I can't deny I enjoyed writing it.
in 2002 for their Rock'n'Roll hall of fame induction, for three songs. A 'proper' reunion seems unlikely, but could potentially see them doing something one off for charity or whatever.
It's been too long, you would have thought they'd have been approached by ATP in the last few years and they could have easily put together a bill based on Dischord... but it's not happened, got to be a reason why.
I don't think Unwound are that bothered either, but it's nice they're making the effort with archives etc.
presumably because they don't agree with reformations so they don't want to be hypocrites if they come back.
However, ATP aren't going to make them reform. They never did ATP because they have a rule of not doing festivals so I'd guess they also don't let organisers of events influence them.
I know that in an interview last year Neil mentioned that he wouldn't mind it, but he's busy with his solo stuff and who knows what the others are up to.
they did a session together for a Nowhere/compilation anniversary show a few years ago.
Also, when Truck was cancelled in 2007, Brian Jonestown Massacre played at Oxford Brookes, with Loz on drums, Mark and Andy playing on a few songs, including Drive Blind.
...but no, it's never going to happen. I think the one off "almost reunion" benefit gig for Natty Brooker in 2010 was the best we'll ever get - Sonic, Willie B Carruthers, Jonny Mattock, Mark Refoy + Kevin Shields, The Jazz Butcher and Jason from Spectrum. Missed that one too :(
Sonic has said many times that he'll always be up for getting back together with Jason and playing again, but Jason isn't willing. I think Sonic has tried to re-establish contact with him many times, to no avail.
The thought of a bunch of mongs trying to start a fight with a middle aged Rollins behind a crowd barrier ten feet away at Manchester Academy is pure cringe.
As much as I like The Smiths' rhythm section, I wouldn't say they're absoloutely integral to the sound of the band. I'm still hopeful we'll see Morrissey & Marr back together one day.
The only band that is absolutely never going to get back together is The Smiths. I have learned to never say never, since Stone Roses and Refused got back together, but I think they're the only band that is never, ever going to bury the hatchet.
Remember The Stone Roses - "we will never reunite"?
Never say never. The Smiths will reunite in max. 5 years.
They won't
They just won't. There's a difference between The Stone Roses and The Smiths, and he's called Morrissey.
Totally agree.
I just don't think he has the mental strength to patch things up with his old bands.

He doesn't put his foot in his mouth
He believes what he says, there's also part of him that enjoys winding you up.
Talk Talk..?
I suppose partly because the version of the band people would want to reform never actually played live in the first place... still *daydreams*
I actually think Talk Talk are less likely to reform than the Smiths, given that hypothetically if Morrissey did patch up his differences with the rhythm section (big if, but still) then he might be up for it.
I'd love to see Talk Talk reunite for a tour
Then they would no longer have to sell shit broadband. Get back to what they do best.
What is the stumbling block for Talk Talk reforming?
As I understand it, Mark Hollis chose to retire from music to concentrate on being a parent - presumably his kids must be pretty much grown up by now. Also, despite being 'retired' he does very occasionaly pop his head up above the ramparts...
1. Obviously Hollis would have to be interested
2. Talk Talk only really existed as a 'real' band up to The Colour of Spring, and then it became basically a studio improv thing based around Hollis and a bunch of session musicians. Mclusky and The Beatles
The Mills Brothers
The Andrews Sisters, Ramones.
Ramones reform Boredoms-style
With loads of drummers:
Tommy (drums/guitar/vocals)
Marky (drums)
Richie (drums/vocals)
Clem Burke aka Elvis Ramone (drums)
CJ (bass)
How about Ramones minus vocals!
power-monotony!
Almost every band that has split up
Spacemen 3
The Jam
easy
Nirvana
Talking Heads
Yeah, I doubt Paul McCartney would be interested in giving Nirvana another go.
Talking Heads actually did reform
in 2002 for their Rock'n'Roll hall of fame induction, for three songs. A 'proper' reunion seems unlikely, but could potentially see them doing something one off for charity or whatever.
Fugazi
It's been too long, you would have thought they'd have been approached by ATP in the last few years and they could have easily put together a bill based on Dischord... but it's not happened, got to be a reason why.
I don't think Unwound are that bothered either, but it's nice they're making the effort with archives etc.
I always say it but the Smiths will def reform
Morrissey is a contrarian (is that a word), almost as a career, and Marr is full of shit. The two would love the coin. Def.
Fugazi always feels less likely to happen than most, but even they will do something one day. Bands can't help it.
Fugazi haven't split up, they're on hiatus
presumably because they don't agree with reformations so they don't want to be hypocrites if they come back.
However, ATP aren't going to make them reform. They never did ATP because they have a rule of not doing festivals so I'd guess they also don't let organisers of events influence them.
Ian talked about it last year...
Said that he's not against the idea, but the logistics don't work because Joe lives in Berlin (I think) now for one thing.
Mclusky
(But as Falco is now doing the odd Mclusky tune in the FOTL set anyway - who gives a fackin' monkeys uncle?)
I didn't think Hot Snakes would ever play shows again, but I was wrong.
I can't see Lostprophets doing another show to be honest.
poor everyone-else-in Lostprophets.
Yep
as much as they're not my favourite band - that's their career down the toilet.
Be reasonable, I hear the surviving members are playing live again...
Here's a blast of their new single She Will Only Bring You Happiness:

Ah shit. Well played
Sweet Jane Andrews Lane Theatre Saturday October 17th @ 10.30pm
du
husker du, too much shit between them, and I doubt Grant can even play that stuff on drums anymore
Joy Division
Don't need them...
...not when we have Peter Hook & The Light tearing through the Joy Division back catalogue.
:(
Fuck Peter Hook.
Not even with yours mits...
the original (and only one worth seeing!)
line up of smashing pumpkins
the original (and only one worth seeing!)
line up of smashing pumpkins
you can say that again
stupid
board! haha
thats lovely
Mansun
Their dodgy bassist ran off with a heap of money, so I can't see any reunion happening in the future (unfortunately).
:'(
Wings
Echo and the Bunnymen
At The Drive In
But...ATD-I have already reformed...
Or are you saying they won't ever play any more gigs?
Slowdive are the only definites i think
depends what you mean 'reform'. A one-off show then Lift To Experience or Talk Talk might, but not for a full touring/new album dealy.
Oh if only Slowdive reformed
I know that in an interview last year Neil mentioned that he wouldn't mind it, but he's busy with his solo stuff and who knows what the others are up to.
Reuben
The Cooper Temple Clause
Tin Machine
The name of that Bowie side project always fills me with dread
Because it makes me think of Metal Machine Music.
Please tell me they were better than that?
oh dear lord no
Much worse.
they were ok actually
ii was bad, but i'll concede
1 was ok in plces, "i cant read" is an indefensable song.
Ride
kind of did, apparently
Mark Gardener and one or two of the others played with some other Aussie band to fill out the numbers a few years ago methinks.
I think it was for the 20th anniversary of Nowhere.
Mark Gardener with some Aussie band
is not Ride.
I reckon Ride will reform in the next two years
as far as I'm aware
they did a session together for a Nowhere/compilation anniversary show a few years ago.
Also, when Truck was cancelled in 2007, Brian Jonestown Massacre played at Oxford Brookes, with Loz on drums, Mark and Andy playing on a few songs, including Drive Blind.
Was very drunk, so not totally sure.
Apart from those discounted by the dead member scenario I always live in hope...
Spacemen 3, Lift to Experience... you just never know. Who seriously thought MBV or Godspeed would ever come back?
That said, I'm not exactly holding my breath for either S3 or LtE even though I'd kill to see them again!
Oh man, how I'd love to see Spacemen 3 play...
...but no, it's never going to happen.

Didnt ATP offer them to do a "Dont Look Back..." Show
a couple of years ago, but Jason vetoed it.
Yeah, I think so
Sonic has said many times that he'll always be up for getting back together with Jason and playing again, but Jason isn't willing. I think Sonic has tried to re-establish contact with him many times, to no avail.
I don't even need a full gig from them
One twenty-minute rendition of "Suicide" and I'd die a happy man.
Lift To Experience might happen!!
Josh certainly doesn't dismiss it.
Radiohead
The Beatles :'(
Everything Everything
So awful
I'd accept the possibility of a reunion just to guarantee they didn't make music for at least three years
Hopefully Black Flag
The thought of a bunch of mongs trying to start a fight with a middle aged Rollins behind a crowd barrier ten feet away at Manchester Academy is pure cringe.
Original line up of Exit the Wizard
G N'R
I mean, the proper G N'R
ABBA
And thank heavens for that. They turned down a billion.
original Tindersticks line up
No
Why should they?!Moz and Marr HATE each other. It will be a crushing disappointment too.
Can't see Kyuss happening
I know there was that thing Garcia toured, but no josh homme = no kyuss
Women
unfortunately
I've heard Moz say in an interview that if they ever were to 'reform' it would just be him and Marr.
As much as I like The Smiths' rhythm section, I wouldn't say they're absoloutely integral to the sound of the band. I'm still hopeful we'll see Morrissey & Marr back together one day.
Husker Du
after reading Bob Mould's autobiography, that is never going to happen.
The Dead Kennedys with Jello Biafra
To be honest...
The only band that is absolutely never going to get back together is The Smiths. I have learned to never say never, since Stone Roses and Refused got back together, but I think they're the only band that is never, ever going to bury the hatchet.
The Mars Volta
Just thought I'd get there first
...
Dr Phibes & The House of Wax Equations. I presume the frontman is still in prison?
