Richard Hawley?!
I'm sure he gets nominated for the BRITs and Mercury Prize every time he releases an album
Amy Winehouse??
How can she win an award if she's been dead for 18 months?
And how would that make the other nominees feel?
Well she (actually her father) released that album of unreleased tracks
she also featured on someone elses album which was recorded before she died (I think so, someone old). The other nominees would probably be all 'she deserved it cause she was such a legendary artist that tragically died' etc etc....none of them will be seen to be bitter as they probably respect her as an artist and for what she did for pop (i.e. bringing back a different style into the charts)
But I agree. Its pretty bullshit and I couldn't really stand her even when she was alive so don't see much point in rewarding her.
with all due respect this is ridiculous
why not nominate John Lennon as well?
Naff attempt at gaining attention for their awards show
Amy Winehouse... :/
Didn't she spend 2012... well... dead?
at least she kept her nose clean for a change
My god that Best British Band category is depressing isn't it?
(The XX excepted)
And can anyone explain to me how Amy Winehouse (who died in July 2011) can be the Best British Female Artist of 2012?
One Direction are great
The XX included
Must be Adele instead of Amy right?
And what are the best British single omnomnominations?
It seems not
PROPER corpse fucking
PROPER haircuts
etc.
Haha...
Alt-J
Mumford and Sons
Muse
One Direction
The XX

is this a 'voted by the listeners of a major commercial radio station' category?
It's in association with Capital FM,doesn't mention public voting but presume it does ...
but interestingly it does say that British Breakthrough Act is public voted.
I'm actually thinking Robbie Williams should get this.
Who the fuck's Ben Howard?
hes not actually that bad tbh

Vaccines for Best Live
Cos they are.
Also, Rita Ora is British? Oh.
I thought she was Albanian or sutin?
Kosovan
Nice to see nominations for Cat Power and Bat For Lashes
would be a major shock if either of them won it.
Who gets the "outstanding contribution" award this year?
They sacked off outstanding contribution, for this year at least
66 with organisers instead introducing a prize honouring Brits' global success, which is expected to go to Adele, although One Direction and Mumford are thought to be in the running. 99
66 1D 99
HUT HUT
the Alt-J nomination is so arbitrary
they're not awful, but they're neither here nor there. They're just filling the 'token indie band' gap, not just for the BRIT awards, but everywhere in the mainstream really.
In 10 years I'm sure we'll all be thinking "were they really ever that popular?!", in the same way I did earlier today when I watched a video of Electric Soft Parade playing on Top of The Pops with a top 20 single. A top 20 single!!
i sit on the edge, alwatys scared to look down
They always nominate the mercury winner in at least 2 categories.
PJ Harvey was nominated last year, and the xx were the year before. None of them won anything.
I'm just back from the 'do' where they announced this...
It's a very tokenistic list, I guess it's up to personal opinion whether you take that as a good or a bad thing. The people who I wanted to get nominated (i.e. Plan B, Jessie Ware, Frank Ocean and Lana Del Rey) did so I'm fairly pleased.
I think with the Brits you can't expect it to ever come out of the leftfield. As long as you've got someone to cheer for in every category that's a result. Plus, Cat Power, Bat For Lashes and The Boss made the cut too and with albums I genuinely liked.
The Winehouse and Rolling Stones nods are ridiculous. You've got to feel one is a ploy to get the Stones to turn up and the other is overly deferential at best.
The British Bands category is fairly embarrassing but so was the roster of acts to realistically choose from.
That one time of year where I go
NO

Yeah, alright

I can't work out why the best pop single of last year i.e. Carly Rae Jepsen's - Call Me Maybe isn't nominated for best single.
She's Canadian.
I've just facepalmed.
Best Single didn't use to be a British only category.
Yes it did.
bat for lashes??
even more ridiculous than amy winehouse imo. a corpse could write a better album than her last one.
nah it was ace
you know nothing.
Amy Winehouse dead and still the best in her category
clearly.
I like the best international male...
... everything else though sucks.
American
*tiptoes outta thread*
Ha you guys had a way better year
If you ask me!
Michael Buble in that international male category makes me laugh mind, just in amongst the others.
Don't know why anyone is surprised by any of this.
It's the Brits.
Rita Ora
is not British
Having read through this thread, I can't be entirely sure,
but is Amy Winehouse dead?
so have the brits such a narrow view of what constitutes 'their music'
that they're run out of female artists and can't be arsed to find new ones so they've nominated a deceased on instead?
Live Act
No Stone Roses for Best Live Act?! Thought they would have been a shoe-in
SHOO-IN
SHOE-IN
SHOO
As in 'shoo away'. But 'shoo in'.
SHOO-IN
Learn something new every day
