Where to start with Kinsella bands?
Pretty sure I've never spent a significant amount of time listening to any of Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, American Football, Owen, Owls, etc. but people keep recommending various stuff of theirs but they appear to have lots and lots of stuff.
So, where's a good place to start (with any/all of the above)?
Cheers.

I'll probably be following this thread a fair bit
I've heard disparate samples of a lot of their projects, but have no idea where to properly start, so to speak.
American Football's S/T album is the best way to start.
Of Owen's stuff, I like New Leaves the best. Such a shame he had to cancel the UK tour last year at short notice.
I'm definitely following this thread though.
With bands like Joan of Arc it's such an enormous amount of output that I don't have a clue where to begin.
i thought At Home With Owen
was the best thing he ever put out
Definitely American Football.
Don't necessarily start with caP'njazz
but they're the best one, Analphabetapolothology is essential.
Have fun!
LOOK AT ALL THAT KINSELLA BANDS!
Birthmark
Seriously:

Best Kinsella band.
28th January, Old Blue Last
:)
i so there.
my top three kinsella records:
Owls - Owls
Birthmark - Antibodies
Joan of Arc - Boo Human (understand that that's not a popular choice, but fuck you all)
I'd say just listen to;
American Football - s/t
Owls - s/t
Cap'n Jazz - Analphabetapolothology
All essential in their own way. See which you like best, report back, go from there.
Seconded
Nice 'n' concise.
at home with owen
I really like Owen
but that is my fave album by far.
My fave Joan Of Arc is Joan of arc, dick cheney, mark twain.
I think it's mine too
New Leaves was mentioned above, but I don't rate that record all that highly. 2011's Ghost Town was also pleasingly upset, probably comes in second to At Home With.
how many we sold
to the bands sleeping on our tour...
...
week one of a two-week tour <3
owen is really shit
american football is fine but a bit boring/there's not much to it.
best place to start is the beginnning. properly get through cap'n jazz. from there i would personally say joan of arc. they have a huge and very varied back catalogue including some slightly gentler album that have a bit of electronic stuff and some more avant stuff including (my favourite) "the gap".
possibly though the best kinsella record is the owls one. make believe are brilliant as well.
probably the top 5 crucial kinsella related albums, i would say;
cap'n jazz - analphabetapolothology
joan of arc - the gap
joan of arc - a portable model
owls - owls
ghost and vodka - addicts and drunks
no kinsella in ghosts and vodka but victor villareal is the fucking champion
also the promise ring are on that family tree and if you like wet gay emo then listen to them - they are absolutely brilliant, sounds like early get up kids if it was any good
Actually, American Football s/t is the only one I've listened to a lot.
Like it.
Yeh totes disagree...
... love Cap'n Jazz and Owls but American Football s/t (and the EP) is my absolute fave, in the best 5 records evar, sort of thing. Can't recommend it enough.
Do agree about Owen though - very meh
wet gay emo
my favourite <3
just slightly ahead of european whispered emo
did you used to play these
http://www.emogame.com/
oh no way did i forget about that!
:D
did
A Kinsella ATP would be pretty great.
Joan of Arc subthread
Everyone's mentioned different albums. Which should a new beginner start with and why...GO.
the gap for the more avant stuff
and portable model for the easier stuff.
i'd listen to Flowers and just sit down in wonder
I am going to disagree with everyone.
The Oneup Downstairs 7" is better than the American Football stuff.
The best Joan Of Arc albums are So Much Staying Alive and Lovelessness and Boo Human!, which is about Tim's divorce.
As everyone else has said, the best two Kinsella albums are the Owls s/t and the Cap'n Jazz LP/discography. Owen isn't particularly good.
Just to give you a heads up, there are about 17 Kinsella bands, so you've got a lot to get through.
It's Make Believe - Shock Of Being
ur all wrong. Except the people who said Owls, them as well.
Thanks everyone who replied xx
