The most obscure artist you like
I know this is a bit of a DIS cliche, but do you know any bands who, say, only have about 4 people who have actually HEARD of them, let alone being hardcore fans? I know this might risk making them a bit more mainstream, but it would be good to see how cult an artist can be before they think "Sod it, I'm signing to a major and going to sell more records than the Beatles."

Pretty big fan of this band from the 70s called Big Star.
They didn't have any hits, and don't appear on any compilations, but they're definitely worth checking out!
A newish band I love called Hold Kiss Kill cover Big Star
I'm In Love With A Girl - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-i0_H2jhwJc
They sent me a copy of their flexidisc because i was nice to them/stuck up for the concept of flexidiscs in the
thread about their flexidisc :3
I got the Domino flexidisc thing on RSD last year
The flexidiscs don't even work on our record player, they just stay still while the turntable goes round and round.
In conclusion - flexidiscs are a load of balls.
I've seen some old ones where it has a little circle on the label with 'stick two pence piece here' printed :D
lost secrets the ancient technologies
hkk have split up haven't they?
No. Down to a 2 piece at the mo'. Steve left the band.
They'llbe back this year.
their song 'I'm In Love With A Girl' is on the Adventureland Soundtrack
just had to check, I knew I had heard that name before
Not sure if this is sarcastic
But I like Big Star, my ex was a big fan, and I think... I dunno, I think they're pretty well known/influential. Certainly on bands like Teenage Fanclub and Belle & Sebastian.
clearly sarcastic
Nah, Radiohead is a clearly sarcastic answer
That was 50/50
Probably someone I'm friends with who makes music
Radiohead
no way
I think you're the only one...
Great Band
*this* this if you fit the OP description
Recently I saw a documentary about G.G. Allin
from the Hungover/Starsky & Hutch/Road Trip director. Quite impressive.
Excessive, bizarre, scary,... It was not easy to define or understand the "character". Unlike other "rock and roll" artists more or less established, GG Allin did not encourage rebellion. He was the rebellion in person. In this documentary you can watch some scenes of his "shows" live, which included: self-mutilation, defecation and coprophagia, physical aggression against the assistance,...
John Wayne Gacy, an american serial killer, said: "G.G. Allin is an entertainer with a message to a sick society. He makes us look at it for what we really are. The human is just another animal who is able to speak out freely, to express himself clearly. Make no mistake about it, behind what he does is a brain."
I became briefly obsessed with GG Allin after watching Hated.
His music was shit and his politics dodgy, but as a performer he was fearless.
definitely not shit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw7lUMC-m3Q
yeah I like some of their songs.
The irony in his life story comes at the end. He considered himself so alienated and different from other artists, but he did not end in a symbolic / heroic / atypical way (on stage, as he promised - a kind of sacrifice in the name of "rock rescue"), but a "common" heroin overdose, like so many other rock stars.
apparently the guy who directed Hatred
went on to make the Hangover, Old School, Starsky and Hutch and Road Trip
that seems to funny to me
gg allin was a twat
agree
.
yeah lets not be pretending otherwise
he was godawful and a giant prick, he can fuck off
wasn't that pretty much his entire point?
being a dick I mean
whatever, but ones thing for sure
He didnt have a giant prick.
Yeah, and tell you what, Crass were a bit political weren't they when you think about it?
Meilir
Welsh singer songwriter
Tom Williams & The Boat
Never met a soul who hasn't heard of them without it coming from me. I'm a huge fan, and they get the odd 6music playlist, but I often wonder if anyone else at all likes them.
I like some of their stuff, yeh.
Again I got into them through 6Music. 'Get Older' is a great song.
Saw them at Green Man
Was a bit meh, IMO.
They sent me their demos 2 years ago
They were quite nice. Then they did proper singles last year which were quite nice also.
That's my TWATB story.
I'm a noise artist and fan so
I like lots of artists so obscure that, if I mentioned their name here, the increase in people in the world who've even heard of them would INSTANTLY increase to way outside of the top 10 most obscure artists I like and thus no longer qualify for this thread :D
SHHH you're RUINING the scene!
@brightonb
My favourite obscure artist is Cementimental
That should do it. Ha, enjoy your world tours and groupies, loser.
thanks ^_^
:D
LOL at the Sonic Youth fans who this'd ^this thinking they're into noise and that they know what Cementimental is talking about.
Dude, I know you're the resident "thinking man's Clarkson" of this forum
But give Sonic Youth a break. Daydream Nation and Goo are both classics, and not especially pretentious albums of their era.
i've seen kylie minoise
can i have an opinion?
this one
http://bodyinthethames.bandcamp.com/
Used to be a massive fan of a 60's Psychedelic folk band from California
Called Kaleidoscope.
I've never met anyone that's heard of them..
Although quite a few people would have appeared to have heard of them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBSr0uKY3UE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBqP33iEaWw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nQp6m7txhQ
I thought I had heard of them.
But I hadn't, I'd heard of the UK band Kaleidoscope. Who are also great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3xjq0XMhj0
Yeah I've heard of them as well. I've had a few conversations where
people have mentioned them when I've talked about the Californian ones.
Think there's a South American band of that name too
Big fan of the UK one (& like the US one OK), so always have to check in reviews/articles which it is.
kaleidoscope are really good
1st 3 albums are all excellent
I've listened to a few artists that have less than 100 artists on last.fm
But I'm not bragging. They've always been fucking terrible.
listeners*
Loui got me into JG Thirwell (well, Foetus so far) a little.
Is he obscure? idk
nah
lotta cred in industrial/goth/avant-garde circles, plus he's collaborated with everyone
Well damn,
I listen to lots of obscure rap artists so I'll stay in my lane.
that don ellis chap isn't exactly unobscure
nor was the other thing you linked to that one time
Ha, yeah
I listen to all kinds of stuff, as you know.
Um, Suishou No Fune?
Kazumasa Hashimoto?
Silver Firs?
I dig my own music
You are the most annoying poster on here.
You were here a while back, and then went away when everyone called you a troll. Why have you returned?
For the great cock
Cry of Shits
You won't have heard of them
Probably Hour Hands
emanuele de raymondi
Onk
Onk, have you heard Onk? Mmmm they're great. It's all about the Onk.
Onk onk.
I don't remember what they're called
but I was at this bands debut gig, with no support, and I was the only one there. I was also the soundman, promoter and barman for the night, the band played their set and it was the best thing I had ever heard, however due to the poor turn out all the members killed themselves with fire which burnt not only the musicians alive but also all their CDs, Instruments & anything else that can hold some sort of memory or attachment to the source material.
In short, only I know of this music
fuck you and fuck this fucking thread
Hey, leave MPBH alone!
(...nah only kidding, he's a dick.)
Is Majorcriiimes also MPBH?
That's where he went!
Damn, I had sworn to never post in his threads again.
He got me.
Is the general DiS verdict that he's a troll
Or is he just a fucking idiot?
An idiot is he who replies to an idiot
You're all scum, sub-human scum..
.. And that's from a sitcom, an overrated sub-Reggie Perrin sitcom.
I think your ire would be more directed at the lunatic board who are ruining your club
But because OMG THEY IS ARABES, you bunch of Red Pepper-reading DISers will think that I, MPBH, a bastion of common sense, will be attacking them in a racials way against their Muslimness.
:DDD knew this thread would be you when i saw it on the side bar thing
genuinely said to myself `this is gonna be by that guy isnt it`. And it was. It totally was.
I've never been duped so hard in my life!
Not sure if a back-handed compliment..
.. or an over-zealous spank with a cane in the same way a teacher lusts after a foxy sixth former.
it's certainly not a compliment
probably Ankle Sucks
who are from Manchester
Moondog
The Winchell Riots
I bought an EP off them after I messaged them through Myspace years ago. I still listen to it occasionally.
The Winchell Riots split up last year.
Rich (Bass) plays in Dolittle (Ange Dolittle ex Eat)
They were great.
If you like The Winchell Riots give Monsters Build Mean Robots a try.
MBMR are great
I really like their Last Days of Lorca project too.
They are both good
Pete, the lead singer/guitarist, is a good friend of my best mate's. Always bump into him at local gigs. Flies Are Spies From Hell aren't bad and from the same local scene as MBMR.
used to be a different band
Fell City Girl I think?
They were also really really good.
Are Shaggs obscure anymore?
'cuz it's them, then. If not, then The Thing.
wait, thought of one
Cotton Mather
i've heard of both of those so i don't think either are obscure
also is your username all about the band from liverpool?
there's a band from liverpool called theintl?
no, "the intl" was given to me by the electrifying mojo, a detroit dj from 30 years back. And you can check your bands' obscurity at obscurometer.com. Just found this. And anyway, maybe you & me are the only ones who've heard of these bands (tho I doubt it)
There was a detroit band from awhile back called The Underwearheads - obscure, yes, but not very good.
The Shat Badgers
Junior Loaded!
or maybe Dolfinz
i don't know how to answer this
i mean, it feels like there should be some qualification. otherwise i could just say my mate dan (who is actually one of the best guitarists i've ever seen - album out on crowfoot records - 14th jan)
but yeah, i know bands from round manchester that have been putting out their own records and self funding tours for ages. do they qualify? sonar yen? tsuji giri? symbiosis? no idea
there was this young...
...singer who died and then people got to like playing her songs in both adverts and funerals, so obscure she's extinct, Eva Cassidy was her name, check her out, or maybe don't.
Michael Jackson was slightly better known but also quite obscure in remote parts of the Amazonian forest, are you from the Amazonian forest? If so, that's another recomendation, dead again though!
And my mate Darren plays the geeeetar, so obscure I've not even heard him but he tells me he rocks, don't keep an eye out/ear open for Darren!
A Cop And A Criminal
I have four mp3s by them from download.com and they are seriously fucking awesome, Liars/Girls vs Boys type thing. There is nothing else I know about them, no names, no origin, nothing.
http://music.download.com/acopandacriminal/3600-8626_32-100731026.html
Junior Loaded were rumoured to have disintegrated to dust if they ever stepped out of the boundaries of Northamptonshire. Doomed to obscurity because of their Midlands Dracula tendencies, shame.
Hmmm...most obscure stuff that I listen to with any regularity...
Champion Kickboxer
Jacobites
Artery
Jake Thackray (more 'cult' than 'obscure' I guess, if there's a difference)
These are Artists that I'll go and see live when the play who are probably pretty much unknown

Viarosa
Tripwires
Two Skies
Toba Caldera
That F*cking Tank

did you ever see the band they were in before called kill yourself? they were awesome
I didn't unfortunately. Only saw TFT for the first time last year.
They played a small pub in Cambridge and My Brother and I travelled iup from London to see them. Mightily impressed.
Can't remember who recommended them to us tho'.
TFT in small venues is a beautiful thing.
really really tremendous band
Hey cat_race
Did you go to that gringo 15th birthday party thing in the end? Kill yourself played, pretty good. Guitar sounded like the most broken thing i've heard in my life.
i'm afraid i didn't
something got in the way that couldn't be avoided although for the life of me i can't now remember what it was. i was pretty gutted though. i still believe that one day i'll get hold of a copy of the kill yourself 7" that has "the artist" on it. can't rememeber whether it was kill yourself only or a split with JR though
have you seen nope?
oh man nope are great
Hey I'm a fan of She Makes War!
Well sort of, very hit and miss artist
No, never miss!!!
Laura is great.
I saw That Fucking Tank open for Whitehouse in Cardiff once
Set up in the middle of the dancefloor rather than the stage. I was just coming up as they started, it was pretty awesome
A few great bands from the Cardiff scene I'm pretty in to:
An It Called Child
Duck Duck Duck Duck Duck Duck Goose
Fratricidal Beanburger
Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase & Fable
<O__0">
Chebstorm
Chebstorm :D
klaus says buy the record
or klaus as he shortened it to.
http://www.last.fm/music/Klaus+says+buy+the+record
Battlezoo is the most played song on my puter.
what a song
used to love him back in the old Orange Unsigned days
Bad Dudes
now defunct, played The Smell a lot, buddies with The Mae Shi, foot Village et al. There's a handful of videos on Youtube which probably doesn't do either albums much justice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rlN80roXd0
oh, Lapsus Linguae!
all hail the best website for a band ever.
http://www.lapsuslinguae.co.uk/
they've stayed at my house, they're not obscure
they're not obscure because they stayed at your house?
or for other reasons?
i don't know
it made sense when i've said it but not i think about it any not-obscure band wouldn't stay at my house. er, maybe they are then?!
have Alt-J stayed at your house?
no alt-j haven't
why not?
i don't know tbh
they're more than welcome
Martin Tomlinson from Selfish Cunt's cousin once stayed at my house when I lived in Preston
True story.
Can't be that obscure
I have a shrine to them in my bedroom...or at least, planning permission
Ratpigeon
Thora Hird
she's fucking dead.
Satanic Malfunctions
Spit The Pips
Bazzy and the Budgies
Embittered
Smash my Brother's Face In
Traumatic Anal Devastation
Not tonight, darling.
Brickface
I only know 2 people who like Narcosis,
1 of the said people got me into them, and the other is someone who i passed them onto.
As for Narcosis themselves dearly missed, unrelenting grindcore insanity to the point that the original grind fans, who were there when it started, have that "bloody hell what a racket, too much for me" expression when first exposed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhCb89Akqx8
wow fuck wow
not sure if I love or hate this
only a handful of releases the melt banana split was a bit special
Last Days Of Humanity
can't remember who it was on here who posted them on a thread may have been mug_mug, whoever it was thanks
the band from manchester?
totally mint. used to bump into chris out and about. he dated a friend of mine for a while.
i remember hearing a story about them driving to berlin to play a gig
and then after the gig was done they just drove straight back. bit mental
are you on about narcosis or last days of humanity?
narcosis were from wigan i believe and last days of humanity were dutch i think.
well i always thought of them as from manchester but yeah wigan
that's them isn't it? chris played guitar and that big fellow whose name i can't remember sang?
just got the cd out to check
yeah chris was the guitarist and jamie was the vocalist!
For a short period Narcosis were the support band on pretty much every metal tour there was
Can't even remember if I ever saw them.
You can 'scientifically' quantify your band's obscurity with THE OBSCUROMETER
http://obscurometer.com/
My pick - "Honrada" - a guy who gave a demo to an ex-friend's bedroom record label - 100% obscure rating.
http://www.myspace.com/purificationhonrada
Myspace doesn't work in China so I can't check, but if it's still there they used to have an amazing shoegaze-ambient track called 'Slalom' on their Myspace that was just pure perfection.
Even my band has an obscurity rating of 99.8%
our bandcamp page must be working a bit (note to self check bandcamp page)
kasabian
real music, so clever.
sometimes 2 or 3 musical things happening at the same time in a song.
Stop making band names up.
It's not big and it's not clever!
Danny Apple
Yes mate! So glad there are still my true fans out there who want catchy tunes with proper songwriting and lyrics.
but then again not just anyone can top the amazon singles chart so Im not that obscure lol!!
Stay strong brother
