records that sound just as good/better at the wrong speed
just played Oblivion Hunter by Lightning Bolt for the first time since receiving it as a Christmas present. I'm useless with remembering what speed to play records and I thought most 12" records play at 45rpm. Anyway, it sounds blisteringly awesome at 45rpm, even though it's intended to be played at 33rpm.
Any others?

i've got smile by lily allen on 7 inch
i played it at a clubnight on 33 by accident and it sounded mint

I bought a Catherine Wheel 12" single for "She's My Friend" for 50p a while ago
and accidentally played at 33. It was great, all swirly, dirgy shoegazy mess but with more low end and the vocals sounded really druggy and slurred. Then I realised, bumped it up to 45, and really didn't like it.

I'v found that
Most really really great songs sound good at both speeds.
A classic example is Windowlicker

Obviously if the song is vocal led doesn't always work!

I have heard the Melvins sound good at 45
Seeing as their records (well their older ones anyway) are generally over £50 on ebay, I have never had the pleasure.

In uni my flatmate bought a secondhand single of the theme song to the flop 80s movie Doctor Detroit by Devo.
We listened to it loads, it was amazing. Then we realised it was meant to be played at 45rpm, not 33rpm. At normal speed it's a bit meh.

i had a very short lived tumblr with some on

I would urge you all to listen to RUIN by Elite Gymnastics
It's a massively underrated gem from last year.
The first half is an odd mix of Flaming Lips, drum'n'bass and better chillwave (Washed Out/Boy Friend/Sleep?Over, idk)
The second half is the same tracks as the first, but kind of chopped and screwed. It's a really simple concept that works far, far better than it has any right to.

Inertiatic (sp?) by Mars Volta.
Didn't realise the first couple of times I played it it was at the wrong speed; tried it at the right speed then decided I preferred it the first way I'd been listening to it.

Never heard this before
completely amazing
The video on that channel of the same thing with Ego by Burial, Four Tet, and Thom Yorke is pretty great as well
-
My housemate had an ep by a techno outfit called Hydro
Just tried to find it online but I can't - anyway at 45rpm it was bobbins. At 33rpm and then slowed done some more on his decks it sounded amazing!
-
I once played my dad's copy of Sign 'o' the Times
If any of you have it, it is the funkiest most awesome thing slowed down.
-
this is really good!
I might have to start trying this out with more records.
-
great idea for a blog
definitely works better sans the vocals though. Owner Of A Lonely Heart intro sounds beastly!
-
Neil Young - Cortez the Killer
played at 45rpm is bloody amazing, though Neil sounds slightly more chipmunky than usual.

I've been waiting for this question for 40 years
Back in the early '70s Paul Greiner, known as a tastemaker radio DJ in Detroit, played McCartney's "Oh Woman Oh Why" at 33. Probably played an lp on the turntable just before & never switched speeds. Anyway, he played it all the way like that, never said a thing, & I've played it like that whenever the situation arose.

I genuinely like this
'Everytime' by Britney Spears, backwards

I can't listen to it at real speed anymore, it's just disappointing.

66 and Fading by OMD
I always used to play this at 33 and it sounds lovely and dirge like. I never realised it was Silent Running already slowed down
-
I remember one of my friends playing a trad jazz 78 at 33rpm
It sounded really doomy and awesome.
-
Destiny's Child - Say My Name (Cyril Hahn)
Not slowed down, technically... but the effect is placed on the vocals. So good.
-
Owner Of A Lonely Heart intro
Sounds like the theme music for a bad guy wrestler.

aye it is better without the vocals most of the time
my favourite bit of Slowner Of A Lonely Heart is the slowed down synth orchetral flourish thing.

MAJOR ONE I forgot
The Osmonds rhythm section sounds as lumbering as the Black Sabbath one slowed down

drum n bass was invented when
innerzone orchestra bug in the bassbin got played at 45rpm, supposedly. sounds better than the correct slow version.

Ace of Spades sounds great slower
So does The Trooper by Iron Maiden
Quite like playing all of Margin Walker at 33rpm instead of 45.
The first time I played Frigid Stars by Codeine I had it at 45rpm and it sounded just like regular indie rock!
