65daysofstatic, debuting what eventually became Weak4, the drumming absolutely blew my mind and then they blew the venues' power so only the drums remained. It was really surreal but whetted my appetite for the final version in a perfect way.
Christopher R Weingarten's contributions to Parts & Labor's Mapmaker album, especially Brighter Days and Fake Rain (no youtube here, sorry!). I utterly despise him for abandoning this band to be a journalist...!
The next couple of albums they did lose that massive sonic assault but their songwriting improved a hell of a lot as a result, not a million miles away from animal collective and onieda I'd say.
Weingarten has not drummed since leaving this band, I read, so that's a consolation I guess!
And I can't see if anyone else has posted my suggestions, but:
- when Buddy Rich has a drum off with Animal on the Muppet Show.
- When little Stevie Wonder gets led around and behind the drum kit and then does the most amazing solo.
- The bit when Max Weinberg runs in to take over the drumming when DFA1979 performed on Conan O'Brian.
- Any Boredoms show, but in particular the bit in Boredrum where they bring a drummer in on a sedan chair.
I don't really care about technique or anything - just the theatre of it.
bright eyes- gold mine gutted, I really like the 2 drum kits and how towards the end one of them drifts out of time I guess to reflect the lagged behind lyric, its a nice touch, sounds unusual and good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtUVxKSHaJw

In my Peel sessions book
it mentions that Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix had a quick jam at the BBC studios, Stevie was on drums, would love to have heard that.
