Are you trying to hijack the DiS Users' list?
not at all, because that has an unlimited set of options
whereas this is limiting everyone to these 5. Parameters can be important in times of abundance.
Judging from the list, it really isn't a time of abundance.
100 records is a lot
And there are probably another 100 records people have complained haven't been included/mentioned.
You can also vote on Facebook here
https://www.facebook.com/questions/10151219817168145/?qa_ref=ssp
None of them would be my #1
and of the 5, I have yet to hear Swans (maybe I'll get it for Christmas!) or Sharon Van Ettin and Blondes doesn't belong anywhere near the top-slot (BORING).
So my choices are really WIXIW or Kill for Love, both of which I have enjoyed considerably... but I think Liars get the honour in the end, because WIXIW stands out as an illuminating moment for me; after the claustrophobic murk of Sisterworld it feels like breaking through into some sort of cavern, daylight peeking through a crack high up in the rock. It's still dark but there's enough light to see the beauty in the surroundings now.
here's the thing
you CAN vote for all 5 if you wish.
btw
if you would like to argue about this IRL, we're having a DiSmas party on Dec 19th. https://www.facebook.com/events/284654351637924/
carefull, there'll be a punch up about it
I meant the 20th!!!!!!
Sorry, Ed Harcourt's gig is on the 19th and my mind is screwed...
I don't think any of those albums, with the exception of Swans, are worthy
that Sharon Van Etten album is still one of the most disappointing albums of the year
IN YOUR OPINION
I have listened to SVE more than anything else this year. And it's the one record that when I've recommended it to people this year, 9 times out of 10 they thank me and say how much they love it.
I could say the same thing about The 2 Bears - Be Strong
as everyone I've put on to it adored it. But it's not even in the 100. Another early year casualty, maybe?
Perhaps.
Sean you seem touchier than usual this year
Is everything alright?
I'm getting less tolerant of others the older I get. Plus what's the point of posting a stupid comment if you don't get an equally stupid response? People seem to have drifted toward some bizarre MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY view of the world, and it seems really unhealthy. We're all just these pathetic pixel dots on some planet twirling around in space, yuhknow? Cosmic.
I respect what you're saying, but surely that's same as it ever was?
Indie kid marries goat, thinks his music taste is incredibly important and vastly superior and blathers on about it in patronising and definitive tones forever, goat files for divorce
All I'm doing is kicking your goat whilst you're sleeping!
You bastard
Evil Sean Adams
The only one I'm likely to hear is Swans, so I'll vote for that.
Also - this is a massive fucking cop out.
Not even bothering to listen to the other 4 records is a massive cop out.
There is currently a three-way tie
WHAT IF THERE'S A TIE?
I will hang myself
With a silk tie.
Out of the five albums above, Sharon Van Etten's is my favourite.
It's definitely not my album of the year, although it is an excellent album. The albums by Beach House, The Walkmen and First Aid Kit have most plays on my mp3 player this year and so they'd be my top 3. I've seen each Beach House, The Walkmen, First Aid Kit and Van Etten twice live this year. Perhaps this should be a different thread but my band\artist of the year are The Walkmen. One excellent album and two amazing gigs. The Village Underground gig was breathtakingly brilliant.
Havent heard any of those.
I did start in on Swans but haven't been able to get through it. Haven't been in the mood for that type of thing this year, although I'm sure it's awesome.
fyi: there are links to listen to them all on the page
the idea in my head was that people would spend a week investigating each of them they haven't heard, and then vote.
Hmmm
In my personal top twenty, I think I had Kill For Love at 11 and Tramp at 15... but I went with Tramp here. The former is a brilliantly cohesive LP when I'm in the mood, but there are no mega stand-out tracks; the latter is sort of patchy but with moments of real brilliance.
More than anything, I think I just hadn't listened to Tramp for so long that it had slipped out of my mind a little. It is very good though.
Yeah, I had Kill for Love at 1 in my personal list I posted last week
but then I saw SVE again this week, and have become obsessed with Tramp again. I really can't decide between about 12 albums that I've loved this year, but those two are top of the tree for me. I think SVE is perhaps more representative of DiS' world, than Chromatics which perhaps could be perceived as a little too 'cool' for the beard brigade and too hipster for the hipsters - even tho it's actually just an incredibly crafted series of pieces of music, that should be elevated above and beyond things with a similar texture and tone. IDK.
It shouldn't be Swans...
They're a great band but for me the glowing praise this album has attracted from fans and critics alike is at odds with what it deserves. It feels like a step backwards (unlike My Father Will Guide Me Up... which seemed to be a progression/evolution), songs are dragged out to ridiculous lengths for the sake of indulgence/laziness rather than for any artistic/aesthetic purpose, and the whole record is not particularly exciting to anyone who's heard Soundtracks For The Blind (1996) which is similar, but more varied and a lot less boring. And I'm sick of [a certain reputable online music rag] banging on about them on a level akin to Q Magazine with their U2 fixation.
I actually believed that Ghostory will be the album of the year
So sad to hear it's not... :(
From that list of 5 I voted for Chromatics.
Given a mandate from our staff, I definitely woulda loved to have made it album of the year. I'm confused I didn't make it my personal album of the year seaninsound.tumblr.com/post/37020296745/my-40-favourite-albums-of-the-year-2012-as
from that pointless list Chromatics
and for me Beach house by a country mile. Not a vintage year,......again.
Tramp is SO overrated.
The clear winner is The Seer. No vote necessary, chaps.
But
The Seer is rubbish
None of these
This seems pointless
You're asking me which of five records that I don't think are album of the year should be album of the year. I've already picked my favourites over on the other thread.
Spoil your ballot
see above
BLONDES for me
Deserved 10/10.
I'll give my vote to Blondes
easily the best of that lot.
but tbh, this is what I think of this voting idea
http://tinyurl.com/cauyz8e
Slightly hypocritical Sean?
"The year-end-list process reduces music down to something that it was never intended to be when it was written or recorded, let alone listened to. When albums are put into a hierarchy, popular things will be popular, and a few unpopular things will be pushed to the fore by virtue of a few passionate individuals. Of course, lists are a good thing if you're a fair-weather music fan or a blog whore"
I'd say, judging by the forum topics you start, you like lists as much (more) than anyone. Of course music wasn't meant to be judged, but, that's what we're doing here. So let's judge. There must have been one of those that the writers voted for more than others? Judging by the other comments so does everyone else. I know which one of those is my favourite. But this is the DiS writers pole.
It makes pub conversations much easier to argue against DiS/P4K/NME etc... No. 1 (rush to the head) record of the year, when there's only 1.
if you have a pub discussion about a website making a certain album number one then you deserve what you get
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v479/grammatron/gifs/vak13.gif
understanding what starts a conversation a website that is your job to run
and loving lists are two totally different things.
I'm a curious person that's interested in the opinions of individuals. I have no real time for the gloop that is consensus.
Think I'm gonna re-read this over Christmas, by far one of my favourite books. Well worth a read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extraordinary_Popular_Delusions_and_the_Madness_of_Crowds
None of those are my No.1
But Swans comes the closest, and it is a magnificent beast.
making lists and saying this album is better than that album
doesnt work for the top 5.. but does for the rest of the albums released this year...
grow some balls Sean. the top 5 is arse wank anyway.
As I said in one of the intros, you're free to go start your own website.
IF YOU LIKE LISTS SO MUCH WHY DON'T YOU GO LIVE THERE
voted for everything except Chromatics because that record is a total turd
echo all the above statements about how silly this is as well
it's only silly
if you take things too seriously.
sure
I voted for Liars because it is the only one I have bothered to listen to
HO HUM.
you have a whole week to listen to the other 4 and I provided links so that you can do so. No rush. That was kinda The Point of this exercise.
Yeah but I don't want to.
Also this all seems pretty pointless.
EVERYTHING IS POINTLESS
That's the point.
FYI - Sharon Van Etten is currently 'in the lead on FB'
https://www.facebook.com/?sk=question&id=10151219817168145
not sure how "which of my top five albums do you like the best"
is more interesting than "this is my top five albums"
did I say it was? Also there is no MY in TEAM, etc
p.s. I don't particularly like Swans...
somehow it feels less interesting
I know what the problem with 'The Seer' is
it's too stagey. it's like 'Swans: The Musical' at times.
Everybody chill... :)
Great list, thank you DIS - surely the benefit of EOY polls is to discover some great music you may have missed out on during the year and this poll does this better than any others I've seen this year. For that, thank you DIS!
On a subjective note, it is great to see Liars & SVE so high - definitely my 2 most played this year.
Merry Christmas everyone!!
mr prozac over here
Possible pseudonyms for sean
Trev
You can't set-up new accounts on DiS, so new pseuds are hard to come by
There has to be forced labour camps with a few places spare for those who don't like 'Kill for Love', surely?
Currently these individuals rank just below people who didn't like Peter Jackson's TLOTR trilogy and aren't going to watch the 'The Hobbit' in 'The complete shits of 2012 list', I've compiled.
i know
there is a surprising amount of people that don't like boring things
I'd take the labour camp over multiple listens to that snoozefest thanks
can we have your top 5 complete shits please
no need to put them in order
SEAN this is DISGRACE
you are a COWARD, you have a DUTY to CHOOSE. i will meet you on the FIELD OF HONOUR.
the Chromatics record is nice but far, far too long
SEAN YOU STUPID CUNT I HATE YOU AND YOUR WEBSITE AND PROBABLY YOUR MUM TOO
I really like Kill For Love so I voted for that. Did I get this thread right?
In fact, how do you post one of those links that thises stuff?
I'm asking for a friend.
Can you just rig it so that Chromatics win? That way you get to double troll all the still-breastfed bedwetters who a) can't fathom why other people like music they don't and b) DEMAND the satisfaction of you telling them what album 'wins' a completely meaningless award.
Calm down
Fuck off, mate.
It's very important that sean knows just how much I hate him.
SVE now has over 100 votes on Facebook
Shoulda just gone with my gut and made Tramp album of the year, but I thought some of you might enjoy this exercise, and that it might spark some debate (wasn't quite prepared for some of the mean, rude and weirdly personal abuse)
:(
I don't really care about what's number 1, I just thought this felt a bit gimmicky for attention's sake, but then maybe you have to do that kind of thing sometimes to get noticed these days with so many lists out there. It's sad that people are getting personal though. :(
'Mean, rude and weirdly personal' are the internet's middle names
giving away Chromatics' new record and a limited edition t-shirt over here
http://drownedinsound.com/news/4145831-epic-win--12-days-of-dismas-giveaways
As an aside, sean, why do you have the Poll once Facebook and here?
Why give Facebook the traffic for something you've done? If you'd just linked it here you'd have had all those folks actually coming here and voting. Surely Facebook's not the place for somewhere like this to actually have content, like this list, decided? I don't see why you'd do this when you don't really have a product other than what this thread is.
And if your arguement is that loads of people are voting that can't sign up to DiS then there's something else wrong, isn't there?
can;t make new accounts on here at the mo can you
for two reasons
1) because we've had to turn off sign-ups due to spam and trolls, and not having our new site ready which should solve a lot of these problems.
2) Facebook can be useful for things spreading virally when people see others voting. There's also some people who will have missed the list on DiS, but may spot it on Facebook.
I'm surprised more people haven't voted, considering 10s of thousands of people have looked at the top 5.
This is so stupid...
really.
It's SWANS and 'The Seer'...
... and brutally, sprawling, beautiful epic. For groups 12th album to be their best is an incredible achievement. It needs to be listened to whole and it really does peak at 'Avatar' which is just a sonic charmer that does not pull back on its final punch.
Looks like Tramp has won.
:)
Yep
Which is what I was gonna pick, but had people yelling the cases for the other four.
SVE FTW!
Aaaand the world* has spoken over how dull** Blondes is.
I listened to it again last night; no distractions, just me and the music. And my god I could not wait for it to be over. "Post-coital fade" indeed. The only reason I would put it on after sex is to get rid of the person hogging my bed.
*proportional representation innit
**that's just, like, my opinion, man
