Busted were the greatest pop act of the 21st century.
This opinion may be a little biased as I was 9 when they were massive, and being a fan of guitar centric pop music at that time, I properly lapped this up, but I've recently reappraised their material, and I think it definitely still holds up today. Its essentially to all intents and purposes music made by 15 year old boys trying to impress 15 year old girls, but there also lies a certain charm in this, the crap double entendres and sex metaphors reminding me of another band of my youth, Blink 182. Plus, they had a complete abundance of MASSIVE TUNES! The second album is the sound of the formula for the perfect pop song distilled and mutated over the course of 15 incredibly catchy guitar pop tracks. It's genuinely great.
It has no pretensions of seriousness, even the sappier ballads are laced with a knowing wink and massive choruses. Its just complete musical fun, the equivalent of a kind of sweet that is not only delicious, it also doesn't give you toothache. Lets just hope Charlie Simpson stops pretending to be Lostprophets/Mumford & Sons and gets back to what he's best at, for the ultimate nostalgia hit. I for one will be right at the fucking front.
So yeah, I've made my (badly written) point. Shoot me, DiS.

nah
still in the 21st century, are we not?
*so far.
The 'were' refers to the fact that the band are no longer together.
Ridiculous proposition
For one thing, when was the last time you heard anyone listening to, or mentioning, Busted? I don't think I'd heard their name spoken in at least half a decade. If they are the premier pop-geniuses of the millenium I think you'd hear their songs more than once every year
no-one does.
which is a massive shame. because the rest of the world is wrong for forgetting/not paying attention.
saw a folk band the other day that was three guys with guitars
and i described them as if ben kweller had invented busted. i got told off for being rude but had meant it as a compliment
[Yawn]
Busted were awesome
Heartily concur with the OP
HATED the Jonas brothers Busted covers though.
Just discovered that James from Busted wrote recently-flopped musical Loserville, based on a Son of Dork album. Wow.
Really want to see Loserville now
It had pretty solid reviews I thought?
This is all I've read about it:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/theatreblog/2012/nov/14/loserville-closing-critics-blame
Dunno about reviews.
I find it interesting that it's got a connection to Busted but doesn't mention that anywhere, which pretty solidly blows the thread's premise out of the water. :D
Also, the posters are confused:
If you love Glee you'll love this
If you love Grease you'll love this
Those two make sense but there's another that says
If you love the IT Crowd you'll love this
which implies they haven't the first clue who they're aiming this at. (Whoever it is, it's not not me.)
They beat McFly for sure
And they are on a par with most of Blink's crappier stuff. And whatever the "serious" band Charlie Simpson quit Busted to be in can fuck right off.
when you were 9 they were massive
are you 15?
19. The first album came out in 2002.
They weren't even as good as McFly.
And to try and rate them as a better pop music proposition that Rihanna or Girls Aloud is silly.
Nah
McFly were meant to be all musical and a "proper" band. Which in a way they were, but they were dull as fuck. Are dull as fuck.
lay off those drugs, I reckon
Beyoncé's pretty pop.
And pretty 21st Century.
So are Girls Aloud, for that matter.
yeah, but i don't rate either as highly
Girls Aloud are a band that seem to get unanimous praise for some reason despite not actually sounding any better than a million not too dissimilar acts.
this girls aloud comment i agree with
yeah girls aloud are pretty terrible
really don't understand the praise they get
JUST NOT VERY GOOD POP
Hey I haven't any time for Beyoncé, Busted or Girls Aloud personally.
I'm just pointing out both of them are clearly far more successful 'pop acts'. The problem with pop compared to other genres is you can't really chin-stroke your way out of the discussion by claiming popularity isn't the important factor: it's the ONLY factor.
So Busted clearly aren't what you claim they are or else we'd be hearing their stuff everywhere.
given how successful busted were before they split up
its failrly likely that had they kept on going they'd have reached the same level as girls aloud and beyonce. Out of 2 albums they had 8 top ten singles and 4 number 1's.
Hurra Hurra Die Schule Brennt
Yeah I have no idea
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqyYh28L75o
Not convinced
But I do have some affection for them as the last big chart pop act before I lost touch with that sort of thing. I even had an opinion on which member of the group was the most annoying (probably the drummer). Moved abroad for a few years and every subsequent pop act, from the class of 2004 (McFly, Natasha Beddingfield) onwards is pretty much just a name to me.
JUST GOOD POP
First album is fucking brilliant
Second album when they tried to write most of the songs, not so much.
remember when people used to REALLY comment on articles
http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/11058-wake-up--a-busted-tribute
yeah it was maybe worse then wasn't it

It was there last ever performance I think.
