Great albums that aren't featuring in Best-of-2012 lists
So, the reverse of http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4421148 - what albums have you loved this year that have been completely overlooked in the end-of-year listfest? I'll start with:
Andrew Bird - Break It Yourself
Meursault - Something for the Weakened
- Relevant artist taggings:
- None

Napalm Death - Utilitarian
Flats - Better living (yeah, they're empty and hipsterish and blah blah blah, but I like this a lot).
good shout with utilitarian however
the Pig Destroyer album (for me) just blew away everything in its path, and they have THE greatest music video ever for The Diplomat.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HdVgLSu7mw
not a single vote for zammuto in the dis poll so far
makes me sad.
Such a great album
Criminally overlooked everywhere.
All of my favourite albums of the year.
^ give this man some indie points
Fuck your Indie points
^too indie for indie points
I keep writing about this album & band
I promise I'm not related to them in any way (though that would be great..)
"Nude" - The Irrepressibles
I will repeat myself...
Lanegan. Blues Funeral is an amazing album. And My Jerusalem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ra4rCsINd4w
So Nick Cave it's boring
Sorry.
THIS
Blues Funeral is a murky, croaky masterpiece.
great
great record
oh hundreds that were released in 2011 or prior to that
Trail of Dead isn't featuring in many
A lot better than their last couple, former indie darlings and Pitchfork 10.0er types.
I forgot there was a new Meursault album
its really great
they switched up their style in a cool way, far less electronic but the songwriting is better than ever and its really well produced. the version of 'teenage millionaire' (from the first album) is killer.
eh, I'm really iffy on it
I was at the album launch in Edinburgh and while Neil's still got plenty of energy and presence (maybe even more than before, he seems to have unleashed his inner guitar-god) the songs just aren't there - they've lost of a lot of what made them unique. Also that version of Teenage Millionaire is probably my least favourite thing on the album, takes all the drama and urgency out of it and leaves a pretty-but-bland shell in it's place
Probably going to make the top 5 of my albums of 2012...
love everything about it.
Andrew Bird and Trail o Dead, both in here
http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4145819-drowned-in-sounds-favourite-albums-of-2012--100-51
Yeah I would have replied I Like Trains
but for you featuring it, damn!
To be fair, a top 100
wouldn't miss much out I suppose!
Cold Specks.
Please will people listen to that damn album. It's amazing and deserves much more recognition than it's getting.
Also I Like Trains and Wave Pictures (new one was much better than Beer in the Breakers, I thought) don't seem to be getting many mentions.
RE: Meursault, while I really like the album I don't feel it was one of the best out this year.
damn, I still never got around to getting my mitts on that Meursault lp. Shame, I really liked the previous one!
Yes to Cold Specks
Havne't heard the whole album but what I have it great.
Oh yeah, The Men
great album.
Most of my favourites aren't showing up and likewise I'm not familier with most of those that are
that doesn't make me indie, it makes me out of touch.
But my shouts:
The Crimea
Darren Hayman
mewithoutYou
I am the Avalanche
Is that Crimea album actually available anywhere?
Can remember reading about a vinyl release at some point last year but they seem to have just vanished. I was convinced that they were going to be massive back in 2005.
hmmm, I've just been googling and it seems you can't even buy it from the band! It was only released in vinyl but I thought you'd be able to get mp3's at least.
best bet I'd email them directly: info@thecrimea.net they had some for sale at a gig back in May.
It's a shame they've been forgotten, it took them years to get this album out (which is why it's a double) but it really is wonderful.
Don' tell me that album is not going
to get a proper release?
I can't believe it's true.
Do know... I thought I had been but then couldn't actually find anywhere selling it :(
They really need to get in on itunes and other d/l sites at least cos it is wonderful and not like anything else around atm. They should be a much loved British treasure.
Don't know*
Apparently it'll be getting a proper release in 2013
Oh and I am Gemini by Cursiev too
i'd totally forgotten there was a new mewithoutyou album out
is it good? Wasn't much fussed about the previous one but I love Brother/Sister and Catch For Us The Foxes.
Yes, it's brill
much more like Brother/Sister than It's all crazy... Still a mix of heavy and slow but not as folk as the last one.
I got a beautiful vinyl box set from them which comes with cd version with 2 extra tracks, 7'' (of the extra tracks), fancy lyric book, nice box with lovely art etc. <3 All for around £30.
I mentioned it in the top 5 albums list thread
but High On Fire have released an absolute beast of an album this year.
As have Martyrdod.
Paranoia is a belter.
Loma Prieta- I.V.
Didn't we already have one of these threads?
Pretty sure we did and pretty sure I mentioned Josephine Foster and Barry Andrewsin Disko
BATS
I totally don't understand why this isn't on the DiS list...
Lindstrøm - Smalhans
Either it came out too late to get the exposure needed to make the end of year lists or Six Cups of Rebel's sheer awkwardness has overshadowed Lindstrøm's significantly more on-track 2nd album this year. 33 minutes of space disco trance funk bliss.
Human Don't Be Angry
Miaoux Miaoux
Has the Boy album cropped up much? I really enjoyed that one and I've not seen it about as yet.
Au
Still haven't spotted their excellent 'Both Lights' album which has dominated my year.
I hope that's only because i've not been looking hard enough...
absolutely cracking album
would be amazed if it doesn't feature anywhere
I really love both
Au and Miaoux Miaoux.
Yeah it was ace
I think 'Get Alive' is my most played track this year possibly
Gaza - No Absolute in Human Suffering
Bit of an banana skin as Band name and title go, but a bloody good album.
I only heard their ep from years ago, but that was fantastic.
Is this as good as that?
every record they've made is superb
the transitions from absolute filth to big joyous chordy stomps <3
These were criminally overlooked:
Lone Wolf - The Lovers
Beachwood Sparks - Tarnished Gold
Isidore - Life Somewhere Else
Stealing Sheep
Puffy Areolas- 1982 Dishonourable Discharge
Sounds like the bastard child of the Birthday Party and the Stooges.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYWXv4M2E1Y
LA Vampires & Maria Minerva - Integration
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdhdGJ9A0xg
Jessica Baliff - At the Down-Turned Jagged Rim of the Sky
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNQuY78dxjg
Josephine Foster - Blood Rushing
so good but it seems hardly anyone even reviewed it let alone had it in their best albums of 2012 lists.
Oh yeah, and JK Flesh
greatness
Chris Cohen - Overgrown Path
It ain't going to change the face of music but it's a lovely thing indeed. Plus Jens Lekman, Woods, Beachwood Sparks.
Also Mac DeMarco, but I'm expecting to see that in the DiS top 50 at least.
Mystery Jets - Radlands
Not in my top 5, or even top 10 but I thought it would get more love for sure
HEALTH's Max Payne 3 OST
It's so bloody good.
Boy Friend
Foreign Fields
Golden Fable
The Darcys
The Chariot - One Wing
Was habits and contradictions by schoolboy q this year?
Cos that's pretty strong, but noone's mentioned it that I can see...
I mentioned it in mine at #3
Ringo Deathstarr and Bad Books
Ringo Deathstarr will be in my top 5, absolute quality that and a step up from Colour Trip
Black Twig- Paper Trees
Easily a top 5 pick for me...hardly a mention of this album on the board :(
BISH BOSCH
ZELIENOPLE!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-sYc8v6pqo
so fucking good. like spiritualized with the life support switched off.
I read your article, and I was a little bit dubious
but I gave them a listen and yeah, really nice actually.
dubious of what?
that they were going to be as good as you were suggesting
Wow - didn't know they were still going
Must have been ten years since I saw them play. Super nice chaps too. Must check this new doobry out after work.
YOU PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE HEARD OF THEM
(MY CAPS LOCK IS ON AND I CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO SWITCH IT OFF, I'M NOT SHOUTING)
Tindersticks
Claro Intelecto
Moritz Von Oswald Trio
Griz - Mad Liberation
I sure haven't seen this on anyone's list. At least one track (my favorite, Better Than I've Ever Been) was available as a free download in late 2011, but he dropped the whole thing properly this year (also for free) and it's just brilliant: all glitch-hop, electro-soul-funk, with some of my favorite sampling this year, and a tendency towards the gnarliest of possible breakdowns. Czech it:
http://soundcloud.com/griz/sets/griz-mad-liberation
Standouts: Better Than I've Ever Been, Live On Arrival, See You Again, Smash the Funk
Kishi Bashi - 151a
First Aid Kit - The Lions Roar
Chairlift's album is also excellent but seems to be missing from most top 50 album lists.
Paws - Cokefloat!
Can't see this featuring in as many end of year lists as it should. One of the best debuts of the year imo
it's very good
but it's not that great, they've still got a lot of potential to fill
Disappears Pre-Language
and maybe two wounded birds
Echo Lake - Breathe Deep
Title Fight - Floral Green
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD-lqmIBNr8
listening to this now, sounds good
whats the back story with these guys? Heard they had 7"s going for thousands on ebay!
they started off as a fairly conventional pop-punk/hardcore band
but with a lot of potential: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kV3R2C73Q9I
then started to go in a more indie/emo and built on that promise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKqKM-gvK_w
and then on this record really pushed themselves without completely alienating their sound or audience. It's the work of a band who've built and built and realised their potential and influences and just made a really really great record: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu9KgGqXDyw
cool, cheers for that :-D
well you did ask ;')
huh, these guys sound really good, loving 27
just checked and saw they'll be playing King Tut's on the 3rd of May, kinda tempted to go
27's a beautiful song
it's weird because they're really not an original band but they take so much care in what they do. Can't wait for that King tuts show!
Matthew Dear - Beams
Stealing sheep and The Men....but i guess you knew that already
Beams is a wonderful record.
Don't know if Spectrasoul are getting mentioned anywhere because I can't be arsed to read many of these listy things. However that is my favourite of the year I think.
Really agree
Loads of repeat plays for me since about August
I think fans of WIXIW might like it (once they get past the almost the almost deftly dated opening bars of the first track).
* sorry, some predictive text abberations in there.
ROYAL HEADACHE
seriously.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFFocv8IaDg
I think one guy metioned Holy Other in the voting thread, then got rid of it
People really need to give it a listen if they haven't.
Ultrasound - Play For Today
It's awesome.
oh really?
Id forgot this was out...thanks for the heads up
Paul Banks - Banks
Bo Ningen - Line The Wall
really surprised about this. Whilst the album does not reflect their AMAZING live show it's still really bloody good. Plus everyone seems to be quite excited about them this year, I thought they'd crop up more often in end of year lists.
Cold Specks
is the correct answer for sure (as has been said by sweetverbs)
Angel Olsen - Half Way Home
g'wan Snapes!
yes, this is a wonderful record. and seemingly most people don't even know.
just listened to her for the first time
would be a lot better if not for the Aguilera-like vocal quivering.
but...that's her thing
that's what distinguishes her from the others.
Liking this a lot
The Invisible - Rispah
Might have made a few lists, but generally conspicuous by its absence. Much better album than their more-heralded debut.
Would ^ This the Zelienople post if possible. An amazing band that deserve so much more recognition.
Rispah is very good
but it is more an encouraging sign for the future than a best of 2012 contender
I liked rispah
but I agree it felt like a nice album by a band who could do good things, but it did rather sound like Reckoner by Radiohead a lot (no bad thing but hard to stick on a list)
The Irrepressibles - Nude
Toy - Toy
nah...its awfully dull
oh god i hated it...........
So glad someone else suggested it
My album of the year
VCMG - SSSS
I think I'm the only one who liked it.
I also quite liked Umberto - Night Has a Thousand Screams.
Nah,
VGMC definitively up there, enjoyed it alot
Cold Pumas - Persistent Malaise
Can't really think how to describe it - like Women but a bit krautrockier I guess. Super good, anyway.
and this again
amazing album
Blues Funeral
The Haunted Man (my number one)
Human Don't Be Angry
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Aufheben
let's add RM Hubbert to that too
1. BJ the Chicago Kid - Pineapple Now-Laters
it's so good. i don't get why he's not huge
Amanda Palmer - Theatre Is Evil
I know it's not particularly DiS-ish, and the lyrics are a bit cringy, but I love it, and was expecting it to feature in at least some lists.
helio sequence and
The megaphonic Thrift records.
I really liked the new Spain album
apart from one track. I'm not sure anybody else liked it though.
I really liked Land Observations too but that rarely makes any best of year lists. Shame, cos it's good.
Mirroring - Foreign Body [Kranky]
Grouper / Tiny Vipers collab.
Not the best thing this year but still GREAT
label in square brackets-centric
that'll be in the Boomkat and Pitchfork lists
great record.
haha didn't even look at those
(obvs.)
Emeralds - Just to feel anything
I know the reaction was mixed, however I think it's fantastic. Short and too the point, really good stuff and a worth follow-up to Does It Look Like I'm Here?
I heard that that iamamiwhoami album 'kin' was good...
... is this not the case? I was considering putting it on my Christmas list.
No one with an opinion on this?
My faves of the year. Not appearing in any threads
Goat - World Music (probably will feature in a couple in the low 40's tho')
The Lost Rivers - Sins & Lostness made the DIS list, but unlikely to make any others. (Dom Gourlay has great taste!)
School Of Seven Bells - Ghostory has made one or two as well.
The Blood Choir - No Windows To The Old World
Daniel Land & The Modern Painters - The Space Between Us
Dark Horses - Black Music
Eat Lights Become Lights - Heavy Electrics
Guile - Alone On The West
Kyte - Love To Be Lost
Mugstar - Axis
Chris Olley - The Death Of Six By Seven
A Place To Bury Strangers - Worship
Plank! - Animalism
Radar Men From The Moon - Echo Forever
She Makes War - Little Battles
93MillionMilesFromTheSun - Towards The Light
Carina Round - Tigermending
Goat is in most of them isn't it?
Some good shouts other than that though
Pond - Beard Wives Denim
think i saw it in one pole
its really rather great isnt it
Its well worth a listen
i very much enjoyed
the sleigh bells record
I really enjoyed
The new Best Coast album but not seen anything about it on any list! Its not top ten material but still...
Demdike Stare - Elemental
Another great release from these guys, it hasn't had much coverage.I think they are doing some of the most interesting things in electronic music at the moment.
Windy & Carl - We Will Always Be
Another stellar year for Kranky who just release wave after wave of good stuff and this was no exception. Fantastic ambient album.
Inner Tube - S/T
Mark Mcguire's collaboration with Spencer Clark from Skaters. Definitely my favourite Emeralds release from the last year.
Think the problem with Elemental is that is doesn't really 'move' their sound on from Triptych
and it's a good deal less expansive and varied. That and the fact that some of the tracks are way too long. I still like it, but it has nothing on Triptych.
The La Sera album is really good.
Not mind blowing or life changing but catchy and fun, listened to it a lot. It's probably in my top 5.
Haven't seen much mention of these
The Cast of Cheers - Family
Standard Fare - Out of Sight, Out of Town
Delicate Steve - Positive Force
Being There - Breaking Away
I know it cropped up here . . .
. . . but I haven't seen Anais Mitchell's Young Man in America crop up anywhere else.
Also on a folk note Traces by Karine Polwart seems to have been completely overlooked by all and sundry.
Somewhat surprised by the Quakers album not cropping up as it was generally well recieved (though perhaps by its nature a bit patchy to appear on year end lists).
DJ Format's Statement of Intent wasn't as good as his previous albums (a lack of Abdominal) but still was the only record this year that scratched that old school hip hop itch for me.
Ravenous - Splendid
I honestly thought this was the sort of thing that pitchfork would be all over, gleefully discordant, buoyant and full of hooks.
Teen Suicide - I Will Be My Own Hell Because There I A Devil Inside My Body
Easily one of the best lo-fi records I've heard this year, falls somewhere between jangly indie-rock and snotty punk rock.
Sutekh Hexen - Behind the Throne
Pitch-black drone experimentation heavy, dark and incredibly deep. It's the sort of record I'd imagine having a lot of crossover appeal.
It's only just come out
But Ego Phizmiz - Eleven Songs
is a really good imaginative and weird indie rock pop type affair
pant loads
light asylum - light asylum
gatekeeper - exo
led er est - the diver
prince rama - top 10 hits of the end of the world
cut hands - black mamba
gary war - jared's lot
rosenkopf - rosenkopf
dylan ettinger - lifetime of romance
white car - everyday grace
die antwoord - ten$ion
haven't seen any of these on any lists...
Michael Mayer - Mantasy
Lindstrom - Smalhans
Paul Kalkbrenner - Guten Tag
Emeralds - Just To Feel Anything
Lambchop-Mr. M
Tindersticks
Saint Etienne
wild nothing
Can anyone believe Magnetic Fields put out an album this year? I'm amazed at how one of the most celebrated bands in indie history has released 4 albums in a row that have been utterly forgotten a week after release. All my friends love Magnetic Fields but they are still singing songs from 69 love songs. Has Stephen Merrit just been unable to pull out of the shadow of that amazing triple album?
Oh and Bloc Party
that thing kind of ducked it's head and ran away before anyone knew if they liked it or not.
Rolo Tomassi - Astraea
Damn fine.
CFCF - Exercises
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISM8INqYieQ
Exit Music - Passage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmtcrv2ImF4
Glacial - On Jones Beach
https://soundcloud.com/adhocfm/glacial-jones-beach-excerpt
Huoratron - Cryptocracy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsHIzhaNOYU
KTL -V
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPneoIM9ugE
White Lung - Sorry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PoQhaNiXvg
By The Sea - S/T
http://vimeo.com/49375820
It's not a great album
But I've listened to it a few times recently and it is pleasant. I look forward to their next LP whenever it may be.
Cemeteries - The Wilderness
Black Moth Super Rainbow -Cobra Juicy
The Durutti Column - Short Stories for Pauline
All Top 5 for me.
Birthmark - Antibodies
by a long way my favourite album of the year. no mentions anywhere whatsoever
Tallest Man On Earth
There's No Leaving Now. Probably my favourite album, single and concert this year but not seen it mentioned anywhere.
some words on Title Fight's Floral Green:
http://heff88.tumblr.com/post/38589074991/album-of-the-year-2012-title-fight-floral
hey i've been listening to Joyce Manor loads later. I know about Title Fight and Tiger's Jaw but what are the other bands that are like this please?
I named a few in that post!
everything everywhere, balance and compsure, seahaven, basement, polar bear club...
Algernon Cadwallader (RIP)
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu: Pamyu Pamyu Revolution
every writer seems to be talking about how big an influence j-pop is on Grimes and then how Grimes is great but no one is talking about the biggest and best j-pop album of the year? i can't stop listening to it.
here's the "hit" www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzC4hFK5P3g
Darren Hayman & The Long Parliament: The Violence
Shrag: Canines
Allo Darlin': Europe
Martha EP, The Just Joans, Tigercats etc etc
Feels like old hat me banging on about how British people on the internet don't appreciate all the fantastic indie pop bands in their own country so I'll leave it there.
Nite Jewel: One Second Of Love
Seems like the kind of thing everyone likes and it got decent reviews when it came out and there was a fair amount of hype but now everyone has forgotten about it? weird.
CTRL + F'd
No love for Titus Andronicus in this thread? Not seen it popping up much in any lists. I don't think it's quite as good as the first 2 albums but still thought it was a pretty strong release. Nice change of direction. Don't think it's necessarily AOTY material but I was surprised not to see it in m/any Top 50s.
because it wasn't that great
certainly not by their standards
Tall Ships - Everything Touching
Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned anywhere. Such a good album and possibly my favorite of the year, strange omission.
Mystical Sun - 26000
My favourite album of the last 17 years and not even one review of it. Says it all really. Thank fuck for Bandcamp.
the babies - our house on the hill
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbgX_CYtSK8
Jon Mueller - Death Blues
I checked this out on a bit of a whim and it totally kicked my ass.
http://deathblues.bandcamp.com/album/death-blues
Only just got it but the Jason Lytle (of Grandaddy) album Dept. of Disapearance
sounds v good.
For me it's the Earth record, which few people seem to rate as much as I do
Other than that Aluk Todolo's Occult Rock which is the album Liturgy wish they could make. Definite crossover appeal.
Most of the other stuff I've loved has probably been a bit obscure... Plekzationz, Techno Primitvism, KTL V...
On a lesser note, I know it's been in most lists, but I also think Flying Lotus didn't get the recognition it deserved, it's been really low down most of the time. Easily a top three for me, but you need to live with it for a while
Soulsavers - The Light The Dead See
Karine Polwart - Traces
The Unwinding Hours - Afterlives
Kevin Macneil and Will Campbell - Are Visible From Space
120 Days - II
All worthy of further listeners....
Troyka - Moxxy
Gallops - Yours Sincerely Dr Hardcore
Micachu - Never
Trio VD - Maze
Trish Clowes - In the night time she is there
The Cast of Cheers - Family
Cheval Sombre - Mad Love
Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold
Spook Houses - Trying
Chris Cohen - Overgrown Path
King Tuff - King Tuff
Mac DeMarco - 2
Moon Duo - Circles
Naomi Punk - The Feeling
Tamaryn - Tender New Signs
Teeth - The Strain
Easily my favourite of the year.
pye corner audio - sleep games
great soundtrack to a british horror film which never existed
my album of the year
was by a dude called kissed her little sister. it's bloody perfect pop music and i've not seen it mentioned anywhere else.
http://www.goldflakepaint.co.uk/12-for-12-1-goldflakepaints-album-of-the-year/
sounds pretty good
so far
The new Bailterspace album didn't make a splash at all
which is a bit sad because it's really good
