Not picking a fight, but they seem real enough to me - long back catalogue etc. Only the last couple of albums where they've transitioned from more straight up bluesy stuff like on Thickfreakness to more of a rock n roll sound.
A lot of their earlier stuff is, very boring, formulaic, and a bit fake. Some of their more recent tunes have been better now they've widened their scope and got a production budget.
I tend to not really like the people who like them, as they try to pass off a 'I'm well into blues, me' vibe the same way people do with 'I like folk music, you know, like Mumford & Sons?' And it's usually exactly the same people.
when they were recording albums of grubby blues-rock in basements and factories and jobbing it in tiny circuits. You can essentially call them authentic because of how they started out.
Ive seen them 7 times over the years, as a two piece up until around rubber factory, they were worth every penny of the admission fee, electric exciting raw, a top live band.
More power to them for evolving...its just sad theyve evolved into a dull turgid 5 piece turd....they certainly never used to be fake. if i could see them again at the manchester academy 3 in 2003/4 again i wouldnt hesitate
i saw them on the 'brothers' tour and the songs they played when it was just the two of them were far greater than the kinda standard dull turgid 5 piece stuff. that said, i liked the album quite a lot (hated el camino) and thickfreakness and rubber factory were really great.
...authenticity and trying to score indie points. I'm genuinely not trying to be patronising or condescending but I've noticed that in the last few years I care less and less about the perception of bands and how popular they are or aren't. I just listen to what I like.
Doesn't mean I don't get pissed off with the fans of certain bands and whatnot and a bit dismayed when a band changes their sound to be far more pop-centric but life's too short to get so annoyed.
I've always been a bit wary of fanboys though so if I met someone who told me The Black Keys were their favourite band or in their opinion the best band in the world I'd probably think them a bit silly but The Black Keys are a good band.
I've no problem with Black Keys, can't see anything fake about them, but agree they were better as a raw duo. Does the 'fakeness' stem from them not being poor black cotton pickers or something? Can two white guys with a love of blues, soul and rock n roll not bang out the music they love? I don't get that line of thinking at all.
Mumfords are shite though ;-)
The Black Keys are dull. I unfortunately saw them live earlier in the year. The only surprise was when they played the song that was the title song to the TV show "Hung". It's a shit song anyway. Bad gig. Crap band.
from the jump: guitar/drums, black keys/white stripes. But after 60 years of rock & roll, authenticity is out the window anyway. Well, maybe not when the artist tries to be quirky - radiohead, bjork, sigur ros - and that's just not fun to listen to after awhile. But they're not the worst by far.
They made some music that got popular and they expanded their band. That is all that really happened. If you lost interest fair enough but not worth your while discussing your hatred for any kind of band. In fairness proper emotions.
Well, you played right into his hands, you gave him exactly what he wanted, he got a reaction out of you, you've got to give him that.
Agreed the latest album courts mass popularity...although it's still a wtf-how'd-this-happen? I'd have guessed they became a local blues bar band before betting they'd become mega. But there you go, that's why I'm not an A&R guy.
not for not liking the black keys - everyone's entitled to their opinion, but the way he's put his views across are incredibly irritating.
Fake - he's yet to prove this - I mean I know that there's 2 of them and then suddenly live, shit, there's 5 of them, but they record everything as a two piece and they're musically talented.
Shite - obviously that's an opinion and not fact, because factually they are at least quite good musicians!
What untrue could have said is "Black Keys aren't really my cup of tea and really are a bit too derivative of blues and music from the 1970s, like T-Rex."
comments such as 'can't believe they got a free pass' who the fuck are you guys, the fucking indie police?
The Black Keys, on topic. Great band, solid library of albums now and El Camino is a confident, tune filled step towards popularity. They are not 'fake', fuck off this this authenticity crap, there's nothing contrived or fake about it. Many of these comments are pernicious for the sake of just being scathingly negative.
I suppose they're authentic enough, they're travelling the world bringing their types of music to people in a way that they can enjoy it. The problem with trying to be too authentic is that it just comes off as pastiche.
never heard them
always think of black eyes whenever i hear the name. black eyes were good
Why do you say that?
Not picking a fight, but they seem real enough to me - long back catalogue etc. Only the last couple of albums where they've transitioned from more straight up bluesy stuff like on Thickfreakness to more of a rock n roll sound.
i agree they're really shit
I can sum them up in one word.
Boring.
Next...
I agree that there's not much to them
A lot of their earlier stuff is, very boring, formulaic, and a bit fake. Some of their more recent tunes have been better now they've widened their scope and got a production budget.
I tend to not really like the people who like them, as they try to pass off a 'I'm well into blues, me' vibe the same way people do with 'I like folk music, you know, like Mumford & Sons?' And it's usually exactly the same people.
im going to see them next week
probably just going to get drunk and that, have a good time. proper haircuts.
But no proper tunes!
I don't get the whole authenticity argument for them
They've been playing for ages with little to no major success, just making music they enjoy.
exactly
I can understand people thinking they're rubbish, but 'fake'? Nah.
they're absolutely huge in the US
like, headlining-festivals-of-100,000-people huge
He's talking about their beginnings...
when they were recording albums of grubby blues-rock in basements and factories and jobbing it in tiny circuits. You can essentially call them authentic because of how they started out.
I wasn't questioning anything to do with them
just pointing out they've had more than "little to no major success"
When I went to Bonnaroo last year Dan Auerbach did a 'superjam' with Dr John. Dr John!
Only got into them with the later albums
Which have some great tunes. Nothing wrong with great tunes. And proper haircuts. Don't really get the hate. Seems a bit 'pitchforky' to me.
Pitchfork don't hate them, think it's more a DiS hobgoblin thing
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/16098-el-camino/
Genuine complaint
Ive seen them 7 times over the years, as a two piece up until around rubber factory, they were worth every penny of the admission fee, electric exciting raw, a top live band.
More power to them for evolving...its just sad theyve evolved into a dull turgid 5 piece turd....they certainly never used to be fake. if i could see them again at the manchester academy 3 in 2003/4 again i wouldnt hesitate
spot on
i saw them on the 'brothers' tour and the songs they played when it was just the two of them were far greater than the kinda standard dull turgid 5 piece stuff. that said, i liked the album quite a lot (hated el camino) and thickfreakness and rubber factory were really great.
They're ok.
Surprised by just how big they suddenly got but yeah they're alright.
Horrendous band. Never really understood why everybody just decided to give them a free pass.
As you get older you'll probably care far less about...
...authenticity and trying to score indie points. I'm genuinely not trying to be patronising or condescending but I've noticed that in the last few years I care less and less about the perception of bands and how popular they are or aren't. I just listen to what I like.

Whatever.
black lips are good though
I like it best when they get beaten up by wavves
black angels too
I've no problem with Black Keys, can't see anything fake about them, but agree they were better as a raw duo. Does the 'fakeness' stem from them not being poor black cotton pickers or something? Can two white guys with a love of blues, soul and rock n roll not bang out the music they love? I don't get that line of thinking at all.
Mumfords are shite though ;-)
Black Lips are way shitter than Black Keys
so contrary
I just saw them live once and they were really boring
'I Got Mine' is a great song.
But that's about as far as it goes for me...
you tube their version
of
i got mine, from Abbey Road, its pretty brilliant
yep
really predictable, boring garage rock dressed up with a nice production. Unfortunately this is the kind of stuff that get's acclaimed nowadays.
Anybody who uses the term
'authentic' in regard to music needs a serious beating with something heavy and wooden.
Black Keys - meh.
anybody
still using the term 'meh' can shove that heavy and wooden something right up thei
*theo
their new album, i swear it only uses three chords throughout the same thing
Rubber Factory > Brothers > Thickfreakness > El Camino > Attack & Release > the rest
Rubber Factory is the only one I have ever listened too
Set You Free is still a tune.
And that's on ThickFreakness.
Oh well
Oh no. I accidentally pressed a "this" instead of reply to say that
The Black Keys are dull. I unfortunately saw them live earlier in the year. The only surprise was when they played the song that was the title song to the TV show "Hung". It's a shit song anyway. Bad gig. Crap band.
I'll now add another word to the mix:
sterile.
My mum often plays El Camino in her car
Along with other riffy music (Joe Bonamassa, Tame Impala, Jeff Buckley). Fits the bill pretty well.
Authenticity?
from the jump: guitar/drums, black keys/white stripes. But after 60 years of rock & roll, authenticity is out the window anyway. Well, maybe not when the artist tries to be quirky - radiohead, bjork, sigur ros - and that's just not fun to listen to after awhile. But they're not the worst by far.
Why do the White Stripes sound genuine
and these don't
how can something sound genuine?
Dunno but it can
couldn't really care whether they're fake/authentic
that's all bullshit anyway. but my god they are tedious. boring band for boring people.
I've seen them live as well btw
whoop de doo
sometimes feel like the only one who doesn't get them
cheers for having my back DiS.
we need 'em...
to remind us how good the Flat Duo Jets were: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbVV3dzj18I
FAKE AND SHITE
xx
Worse than The Rifles and The Drums?
i think not
I never understand these kind of threads.
:D
Rubber Factory is a damn fine record
Agreed the latest album courts mass popularity...although it's still a wtf-how'd-this-happen? I'd have guessed they became a local blues bar band before betting they'd become mega. But there you go, that's why I'm not an A&R guy.
More power to 'em, I say.
didn't realize that untrue was an idiot
not for not liking the black keys - everyone's entitled to their opinion, but the way he's put his views across are incredibly irritating.

Yes, I am a cunt.
tbf
you have probs got him spot on.
Threads like this make me fucking hate this place
comments such as 'can't believe they got a free pass' who the fuck are you guys, the fucking indie police?

the music boards are so weird
I think The Black Keys and Mumford & Sons are sold on their authenticity
I suppose they're authentic enough, they're travelling the world bringing their types of music to people in a way that they can enjoy it. The problem with trying to be too authentic is that it just comes off as pastiche.
I like this comment,
Spot on. It's the same with how Major Labels have indie style imprint labels, to appear more 'authentic'.
TBK are nowhere near as contrived as Mumford tho
I think authenticity is only a problem when:
A) You rely on being an authentic alternative to inauthentic acts - see James Arthur/Ed Sheeran
or
2) Your chosen character and ideology is retrospective, conservative, or naff - see Mumford
What I mean is
We know David Bowie wasn't a spider from Mars but this wasn't a problem as it wasn't sold as genuine and his music was good, his character interesting
Don't care either way about Black Keys
but their hip hop record was cool. They should do more of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDxC4u_4TK8
