I thought someone would protest about My Way
but the original is sentimental guff sung by that awful arsehole. Sid Vicious sings "I killed a cat, but not in a gay way".
WIN.
-
Cat Power: Red apples.
It's DefinItely by the way. Every time you put an 'a' in the word a fairy dies.
moker this'd this -
yo la tengo - the whole of the law

For some stupid reason I thought this was referring to record covers
and was about to say that the Kraftwerk re-release covers were much better than the originals...
But I'd say that How To Dress Well's version of R Kelly's I Wish is better than the original (just)
-
Only Love Can Break Your Heart - Saint Etienne
Take Me To The River - Talking Heads
Johnny Cash - Hurtand, obviously, Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sisters.
-
Heartbeats - Jose Gonzalez
Baby I Love You - Ramones
-
Comfortably Numb was a good cover
but not better than the original. that was iconic. No-ones gonna think much of the Scissor Sister's in 40 years time. It's just a good disco song and that's it.

I haven't heard the last two
But all the rest are wrong.
Rating Fishbone above Curtis Mayfield, Ministry above Magazine, RHCP above Stevie Wonder is just perverse.
I like the Big Black version of The Model but no way is it better than the original.
-
John Cale's versions of Hallelujah and Heartbreak Hotel
Especially the versions on Fragments of a Rainy Season
-
I love the ZZ Top version of this
but the Rapeman version of Just Got Paid is fantastically scuzzy:
-
this to the first part
the dinosaur jr version sucks

Bauhaus: Ziggy Stardust
The realisation of what the piss-weak, poorly produced and borderline-folk original was meant to sound like.
For a classic ALBUM, I still think Ziggy sounds rubbish.
-
Completely agree
Good call, man. Bauhaus fucking nailed that song. I'm also going to say that their version of Third Uncle absolutely obliterates Eno's original, too.
-
Ramones - I Don't Want to Grow Up
Love Tom Waits' original but the Ramones absolutely own the song.
xheathenx this'd this -
The original is actually a French song
called Comme d'habitude, written by Claude Francois. So Sinatra's version is technically a cover too, though Paul Anka rewrote rather than translate the original lyrics.

this cover of Higher Ground by Ellen McIlwaine
is the best cover of the song i have ever heard
beat that

i'm an idiot
Ellen McIlwain - Higher Ground

Personal taste mate.
I'd take Ministry over Magazine any day of the week. I think these covers are better than the original.
I also love Creedence Clearwater Revival's cover of I Heard it Through The Grape Vine better.
Tool's version of Led Zep's No Quarter is also a belter. -

This is true
Sid Vicious was a cunthead. But I was more talking about the people who worship that rat-pack shit. I should have made myself clearer.
-
Agreed
Dylan's ltrics and voice and passion and almost-growl and rawness of the guitar makes Mr Tambourine Man great. The Byrds cover is proper 60s chart bollocks.
spiritofjazz and furio this'd this -
Agreed
but I could shit in a pint glass and it'd be better than the original.
-
Yellow Ostrich's version of Blue (Da Ba Dee)
Just goes to show that in some parallel universe somewhere Eiffel 65 are the new Beta Band.

The Windmills of You Mind - Dusty Springfield

-
dusty springfield
suddenly from south wales.
-
And Paul Anka rewrote them...
after a young David Bowie had been given the lyrics and done a lousy job - Bowie's bitterness at the song's success pushed him into a solo career and 'Life on Mars' is inspired by My Way
-
given the lyrics?
I meant 'given the job of rewriting the lyrics'
-
Well, there's no denying Eno's is good.
But their version represents for me, a convergence of everything that I love about Bauhaus: the drumming and bass are top notch, Daniel Ash's guitar sounds incredible, and Peter Murphy's vocals are great. I may be slightly biased as it's probably among my favorite Bauhaus tracks, but I still think it's better than Eno's version.
-
This'd for the Dead Souls cover.
I don't think it's better than the original, but Reznor definitely captured the spirit of the song, and really did it justice.

They were both pretty loathsome.
