Tame Impala have made one of the albums of the year IMO
As for The Cribs, Jack White and Tribes being so high up that list. No comment!

This reminds me, remember that 10/10 for The XX
Is anyone still prepared to stand by that?
I thought I agreed the first week of listening to it, but I've never been back to it since. on reflection maybe a 7, or 6.5seedler this'd this -
The 10/10 was the one guy who reviewed its opinion, etc, etc... was only a 6 maybe a 7/10 to my ears.
-
I think this might just be a staff vote, rather than a reader poll (which apparently Deftones are currently top of?) or the choice of the editor/publisher/ad-department
thephotobooth this'd this -
So do I
(not the Grimes part though)
-
the Tame Impala album
is one of my top albums too. Conversely, the Pond album is pretty crap.
Is that list in the right order? It looks pretty random to me.
-
I'll revisit it later. On first listen I thought it sounded like a really bad Dandy Warhols album for psych-rock fetishists (and I say this as someone who liked The Warlocks enough to go to see them three times)
-
the score may have seemed overblown, but the guy who gave it a 10 wrote a REALLY convincing review imo
I was genuinely expecting the album to be amazing
-
They really like Tame Impala don't they?
Three of top 16 are TA related.

thqat graham coxon album was pure shite
i'm still upset about that
-
Yeah the tribes Howler thing is unreal
such generic, crap indie rock. Wouldn't have even been considered 10 years ago.
-
Very likely
I'd expect a fair few there to figure highly in the DiS list(s) actually!
-
Yeah the Howler/Tribes thing is unreal
Such generic indie wouldn't have even been considered 10 years ago.
-
I like that DIIV are in there but weird no wild nothing
And it looks like the new Scott Walker is going to go the way of Kate Bush last year. Released so late in the year when everyone is preparing lists so they overlook it.
-
NME are rarely right about anything
but the Tame Impala album IS great. Not sure about the rest. Would have liked to have seen Menomena and Lotus Plaza there, but seeing as I'm not their target audience I don't suppose my opinion matters.
-
Don't think Scott Walker
is really NME's cup of tea these days anyway.
-
flylo at 49?
Bellends
-
Ok I take it back
It sounds like a boring Beta Band doing that Beatles-y thing
-
Angry
Atrociously transparent attempt to shoot for something resembling credibility! Even referring to their choices on the cover as "controversial". I don't think they even reviewed some of these more 'Pitchfork-y' albums the first time round. And then, when it comes to British albums, the same old shit that they usually peddle. Jake Bugg in the Top 10.
The point of a list like this shouldn't be to try and cover as many bases as possible. Anyway, if these actually are the albums that the NME staff loved the most, then they should be writing about them every week apart from running Vaccines/Oasis/Stone Roses covers on a loop. Fucking identity crisis of a magazine.
-
It's been a total grower for me.
First couple of times through I wasn't at all impressed. Stuck with it though and now I love it. Not a 10/10, but definitely in my top 5 of the year.
-
So when they don't cover these bands they're crap
and when they do they're crap. Damned if you do...as they say. I just listed to Timpala and I just don't see it. I feel like i've heard that album before several times. There were better albums. NME's top 50 is usually pretty good. Always better then Uncut and Mojo's which have become so predictable. They were the only one's to get These New Puritans right.
calumlynn this'd this -
this went from an initial 6, up to a 7 and now down to a 5 or 4
Chained is really the only good track.
-
I don't see what the complaint is
do you want NME to start covering 'pitchfork-y'/interesting bands or would you rather they stuck with the post-Libertines shit forever? They're obviously going through a transition, trying to slowly incorporate coverage of slightly more inventive bands, without alienating their core readership (the ones who actually like all that Jake Bugg/Miles Kane shite). If they went the whole hog and suddenly all their features were on Liars and Ariel Pink rather than Muse and The Vaccines then they'd surely lose all their readers?
automatik and juicegermer this'd this -
On reflection I think I was over generous
a 5/10 is silly, I'm now favouring a 3/10 which has only been compounded by the shitty follow up
-
That list is all kinds of shit
but that's not a surprise.
Whilst I'm here though, just thought i'd ask, please, please can you stop claiming that the chromatics album is really good? It's decent at best. It's just electro-pop. I mean it's literally just electro-pop, there's absolutely nothing there that makes it anything more than a pleasant album to listen to occasionally.
Just saying cos i have a feeling you're gonna do something bad like make it no. 1 on your list thing. Doesn't really matter much, but it's times like that that kind of highlight how out of touch with the rest of dis' music taste you can be. This and blood red shoes and paramore and you get the idea.
-
I can't get into that Chromatics album at all
I actually found it really difficult to listen to from start to finish, it felt very very long. Feels like I'm missing something though, cos there are plenty of people on here who love it.
Also, I don't like Blood Red Shoes but have always found Sean's love of them quite nice because it's obviously so genuine. I've never felt as if they're forced down the throats of DiS readers, so what's the problem?
HumanDog this'd this -
2nd listen to Impala
what am I missing here? I listen to the new Tindersticks and I feel it in my bones. This leaves me cold.
sean this'd this -
pretty surprised to see merchandise - children of desire on the list
no one has really mentioned it anywhere yet it is fucking great
hitsville this'd this -
just looked it got 7.8 on p4k
haven't seen many people on DiS mention it though
-
Yeah, that's something great about sean
He likes what he likes and it's not always what's coolest but the guy's clearly passionate, and the site still gets a good balance of coverage.
-
no problem really
i said it didn't matter much. just have a suspicion sean's gonna make it his no. 1 and i wanted to get my disapproval in FIRST so when everyone criticises them in the comments below the end of year list i can accuse them of bandwagoning and be really smug about it.
-
My favourite album of the year too.
how pretentious to suggest that NME might have got it 'wrong' with your carefully-placed question mark.
-
PS. I last bought NME in 1998
so I can't comment on the quality of the publication itself.
-
is this the first year
in the last decade that there hasn't been a big crossover indie/alt album in the NME top 20 albums of the year? your man in the street/non NME reader hasn't heard of any of that stuff i'm saying.
-
Except for that awful Alt J record that won the Mercury Award
and the Jake Bugg record which went straight to number 1
-
plus
they've maybe heard of Lana Del Ray
-
III at 4
oh.
-
mm yeah but the Mercury means sod all these days to
non NME reader folk. Jake Bugg had a number 1 album? stone me..
-
yeah i love it too
and it sounds brilliant live
-
I think the Howler album is alright. I can't believe the Spector album are there though.
-
yep
and he even thanked the people of Nottingham for it

and White Stripes' man Jack White
and former Radio 1 crossovers The Maccabees and The Cribs
and current crossovers The XX
and Radio 1 A Lister Frank Ocean
and former Talking Heads singer David Byrne...

The only Tame Impala song I've really heard
is Elephant and all I can think when of when I listen to it is Kasabian. :(
gonad this'd this -
Totally agree
I know that I, and loads of people probably sided w/ it, based on the review and first impressions but few albums have failed to hold my attention like this one did.
-
yep
I loved the first Tame Impala album and was genuinely expecting Lonerism to be brilliant, but it just does nothing for me.
-
or Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
or T.Rex
or not quite like anything else really. Drumming is incredible, as always - the pauses and the rushes in catching up. It's real psychedelia. -
Well the Deftones have made a ridiculously great album
The people have spoken.
Seriously give it a chance.badgertastic this'd this -
The reader thing has a problem that 1 album w/ one 10/10 rating
So that's why the best albums have been Cat Power, Flying Lotus and Deftones, as these got no hype from nme, so their readers didnt buy them and risk dissapointment, whereas die-hards/dissers gave them the high scores.

Enter shikari above liars.....

every single year when the NME list is published
it's about three quarters the same as DiS and Pitchfork and Stereogum
and every single year someone accuses it of being a cynical cred-grabbing cash-in
same as it ever was
-
hey look, here's last years
http://stereogum.com/899191/nmes-50-best-albums-of-2011/list/
which apparently had tune yards in the top ten?!?!

The difference
Is that the DiS and Pitchfork lists are very good summations of the music that they have been writing about all year. NME throws stuff in from nowhere which it either gave rubbish reviews or completely ignored, in a misguided attempt to catch up.
-
the new Tame Impala album is brilliant
don't give a fuck what DiSSean says on one hand, or NME on the other
oldshitnewshit this'd this -
err i kinda know what you're getting at
but all the albums in the top 10 (at least) got 8s or 9s, so i don't think they throw in stuff that they originally gave rubbish reviews.
Also, as a review is just one persons opinion (though admittedly i dunno to what extent this is true for NME), these staff-voted charts are always going to be able to elevate a poorly reviewed record, if it's loved by the majority of staff. Or probably for the DiS list, when it comes to the XX album, the opposite.

BBC list goes live next week...
Made up of votes from writers and DJs - DJs from across Radio 1, 1Xtra, 6 Music, Radios 2 and 3. So Huw Stephens, Jen Long, Tim Westwood, Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Bob Harris, Jamie Cullum, Rob da Bank, Mike Harding, Marc Riley, Steve Lamacq, Vic Galloway, Stuart Bailie, Mark Radcliffe, Skream, Semtex, Charlie Sloth, CJ Beatz, Robbo Ranx... the list is quite impressive(ly large).
Any guesses, after this list? Naturally there are a few crossovers.
-
(I'll post the link when it is live, so y'all can shoot it down in flames...)
Remember it's a totally fare vote - the process will be outlined clearly.
-
FFS... I mean FAIR, obviously.
Fare... no money exchanged hands :o)

Yep, nothing you said is any good though - all of it gives me the fear.
I'm also throwing in Status Quo.
-
Pretty sure that
the moment when that huge riff kicks in at the end of Music to Walk Home By is my favourite music moment of the year
-
Saint Etienne made the best
pop/dance record of the year. Where dey at?
-
that Tame Impala album is good, only has one STANDOUT track though
as i've already said, my band have made one of the albums of the year.... it's just that not many people have heard it
-
Count me in
Each time I listen to it expecting something to click I go back disappointed...
-
They gave Flying Lotus 9/10
I'm actually completely surprised it's not higher.
whatisthewhat this'd this -
Howler are awful
When Tribes' album came out I found it genuinely exciting.
-
no Status Quo.
Todd Rundgren.
T.Rex are great. The rest of the album sounds nothing like Elephant anyway. If you don't listen to it, you might be missing out. Or not, it's just one album out of thousands released this year
-
I've listened to no more than one album from the list
What's the point of checking out the new stuff when I can just simply enjoy listening to the old stuff?
