A year or so ago when there was a rape and sexual assault at Lattitude a thread about it featured a couple of users making loads of 'jokes' about rape and the women at the festival. I complained to drownedinsound and received a "nothing we can do" type reply. The posts remained and the people posting just went on to mock a couple of us that voiced distaste at jokes about some poor girl that had been raped. It was disgusting and drownedinsound didn't want to know. I stopped reading the forum for ages after that.

i remember it actually, what i wrote was just a reply to someone who had tried to make a clever pun on latitude, so i made two which were obviously, and purposefully, non-sensical. a threadsmash/post deletion makes it look like it was just something i wrote in response to nothing.

but this concerns notes sent to an individual with rape threats which i'm sure you'll agree is more serious.

Agreed. It's just an awful thing to be making 'jokes' about altogether really. The forums on here can often be hostile and aggressive I find, but jokes about things like that aren't 'jokes' to many people.

and using a public forum brings a degree of responsibility. I agree with the principle of forums being self-policing though, although there has to be a line drawn with abuse. These are general points though as I wasn't posting when what you described happened.

Reading that thread again it make me even more angry. Especially that those saying it's not a joking matter get slagged off. Whilst I don't want to rake over old coals, I still think those responsible for making jokes about something so serious should be removed from this forum.

Things You Need To Know About the Internet:
* There will always be trolls. If you ban them, they will return under a different name and keep trolling.
* Trolls thrive on attention. If someone bothers you with their trolling, ignore. Even if it's about rape or whatever. Your having a tantrum will make their day.
* If someone isn't necessarily trolling but makes a joke that you feel is tasteless, register your displeasure once and once only. Don't get drawn into some stupid escalating shriekfest.
* If you do all this and are still finding it hard to function in the rough-and-tumble world of online communication, go outside & do something else.
* Remember at all times: it's just some stupid anonymous dickhead on the internet. Get some fucking perspective.
